Steve Finnan Retires From International Football
      Jan 22, 2008 02:41:08 pm
Steve Finnan has today announced his retirement from international football.
The Liverpool right back made 50 appearances for the Republic of Ireland since making his debut against Greece in April 2000.

Said Finnan: "I've thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Republic team, with the World Cup in 2002 being the highlight of my international career.

"But I'll be 34 when the next tournament comes around so it's the right time for me to step down.

"There will be a new manager coming in soon who will have his own ideas for the future with younger players having the chance to stake their claim to be in his plans."

An advantage to us then? Seems like he's not getting as many games as he usually has done in the past. Wonder if this had a say in his decision.

Another one bites the dust. We'll be lucky to have a team left by the time we finally get a new manager.

      PHEW!
That sent some shock through me when i first read it.
It should be a slight advantage for us then more than anything else : more dedication to us but wouldn't say it should make a big difference

Great player and im sure ROI will miss him. Great to see his reasons for standing down from international football, Shows great consideration and just how genuinly great a man he is.

as an Irishman (REDS COME FIRST) im delighted he has retired. One of about 3 genuine class players we have and what do we do...leave him on the bench so Carr could play right back or play him left back?????

Scored a cracker in Dublin in injury time against Cyprus and while all the others looked like they just won something he just walked back as if to say "poxy draw with Cyprus"

Deserved more caps Stevie but Irelands loss is Liverpools Gain
