A train could be named Bob Paisley?
      May 20, 2008 02:52:57 pm
There was an article in yesterdays Echo which caught my eye. There is a vote going on the Echo website which will end up with four different people (or a horse and three people) who have had an effect in the Liverpool region over the years, to be immortalised on a Merseyrail train.

Would you like a train to be named Bob Paisley? If so, you can get your votes in here:

Train name tribute to the great and the good

May 19 2008 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo

FOUR Merseyrail trains are to be named in honour of some of the region’s greatest men and women.

And ECHO readers are today being asked to decide who should be remembered on the engines.

We have joined forces with fellow Capital of Culture year partner Merseytravel to launch the competition to celebrate 2008.

Transport bosses have come up with a shortlist of worthy men, women – and one horse – who they believe all deserve to have a train named after them.

They include sportsmen, musicians, politicians, actors, business leaders, health campaigners, inventors, religious leaders, war heroes and comedians.

Cllr Mark Dowd, chairman of Merseytravel, said: “This list reflects the rich heritage of our region.”

Among those who are nominated are Everton legend Dixie Dean and former Liverpool manager Bob Paisley, while three-times Grand National winner Red Rum is also in the running.

Battling Bessie Braddock goes head-to-head with former Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and war heroes Noel Chavasse and Captain Johnnie Walker are both on the shortlist.

Fans of the Liverpool music scene may opt to vote for the Fab Four or singer Frankie Vaughan, or they may feel conducting maestro Sir Simon Rattle and legendary DJ John Peel deserve recognition.

Meccano inventor Frank Hornby and king of the liners, Samuel Cunard, are also among the 20 names.

And the late actor Rex Harrison and “big hearted” comedian Arthur Askey make up the list.

ECHO editor Alastair Machray said: “When you look at the names on this shortlist, it makes you proud to be able to say you live or work in this great city.

“Each deserves to be recognised so it’s going to be a hard choice for people.”

      The full shortlist:

      William Ralph "Dixie" Dean

      Red Rum

      Bob Paisley

      John Peel

      Frank Hornby

      Captain FJ "Johnnie" Walker

      Harold Wilson

      Bessie Braddock

      Professor Janet Hemingway

      Margaret Simey

      Kitty Wilkinson

      David Sheppard and Derek Worlock

      Noel Chevasse

      Dr William Roscoe

      Rex Harrison

      The Beatles

      Samuel Cunard

      Arthur Askey

      Frankie Vaughan

      Sir Simon Rattle

Cast your vote for your favourite.

The four names with the most votes will each have a specially-created plaque dedicated to them in naming ceremonies at Merseyrail stations.

The closing date for voting is Wednesday, May 28.

I've voted for Paisley for obvious reasons.

It would be great if the train was named after him.

I was lucky to see Bob Paisley play for the REDS and his heart was as big as a train,I cannot recall BOB running out of puff.He was a great man and ever so loyal to this club, even after scoring in the 1950 semi final and getting dropped for the final against Arsenal .It is no wonder players had so much respect for BOB when he was manager .

The votes worked, Bob Paisley was one of the four selected. Well done.

      Inevitable really.

Saw this earlier.  Apparently the first one of the four to be named is going to be Red Rum.

The other two are Dixie Dean and a special Beatles train.
