European trophies on display at Liverpool museum
      Oct 13, 2008 09:43:00 am
Okay, so you can see most of them at Anfield anyway, but...

The biggest trophies in European football have gone on display at Liverpool's World Museum.

The Uefa European Championship, won by Spain, Manchester United's Champions League trophy and the Uefa Cup form part of the glittering display.

The Uefa exhibition - called Only a Game? - also includes memorabilia from the National Football Museum.

Artefacts including shirts and medals from some of the biggest players in football history also feature.

Michel Platini, President of Uefa, said: "I am delighted that Uefa is bringing this exciting exhibition to Liverpool during its Capital of Culture celebrations, a city that loves its football and plays such a big role in Europe's fascination with the game."

The exhibition also includes items from the Everton Collection, a huge number of items chronicling the history of Everton FC, and items from the Liverpool FC Museum.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said: "There is no city in Europe where football means more than it does to the people of Liverpool.

"So I think it is great that we are having a European football exhibition as part of Liverpool 08."

The exhibition, which opened on Saturday, runs until March 2009.

'Someone said, "Football is more important than life and death to you," and I said, "Listen, it's more important than that."'
Bill Shankly, former manager of Liverpool FC

Why do people love football? What does it mean to them? What does it mean to you? Only a Game? explores Europe and its most popular sport: football. Bringing together UEFA’s most prized trophies, historical artefacts from the last 50 years brought together by the National Football Museum, and stunning images from the great games, this interactive exhibition invites people of all ages to plunge into the emotions of football.

In our school playgrounds, playing fields and shiny stadiums, dreamers, players and supporters all belong to one family. Football gives us a sense of local and national identity. But does it also open our eyes to other cultures? Through football, can we see Europe in a different light?

Only A Game? is made up of eight zones where you can meet your footballing heroes, see their shirts, trophies and medals, and think about what European football means to you.

I saw this yesterday on text, emphasised you could see the scums CL trophy! Which is nice 'cos those scum bags did not parade it when they won it, unlike a true team that appreciates its fans.

It's not the scums  CL trophy they're only borrowing it due to having won it only 3 times, unlike the REDS who own their own due to having won it 5 times why didn't we lend them ours ? ;D

That's the broom cupboard at the back of the museum out of action until March then.

Might take a wee stroll down there on Sunday. Best get a look at our new big ears come May.
