Steven Gerrard has told Liverpool that he wants to sign a new deal and finish his career at the only club he has played for.

Gerrard made the announcement as he approaches the 10-year anniversary of his Liverpool debut next week.

"I have two and a half years left on my contract and hopefully I will sign another one and stay for the remainder of my career," he said on Friday.

"I do not know what is going to happen over the next 10 years but certainly for the next five or six I hope I am playing in Liverpool's first team."

Gerrard's comments come on the same day as manager Rafael Benitez tipped the 28 year-old as the man who could one day replace him as manager.

Gerrard is back in light training and battling to be fit for Wednesday's Champions League home clash with Marseille but his clear indication he never wants to leave Anfield will delight the club's fans.

He added: "We will have to wait and see about management but I certainly want to get my qualifications to enable me to coach and manage. Then I will have to decide what I want to do."

"Whether I will be interested in the Gary Ablett (reserve coach) type role, the Sammy Lee (assistant manager) role or the Rafa Benitez role, I do not know.

"I just want to get all my badges and then we will see. But I have a lot more football to play before we get to that stage and that is what I want to focus on at the moment.

"All I can say at this stage is the last 10 years have been the best of my life. I have lived the dream doing something I have always wanted to do and if my working life carries on being with Liverpool then I will be very happy.

Amazing. This would probably the first time I've known of a footballer who finishes where he started. Stevie lad, top man. You're one true legend.

Didn't doubt the fact that he'd stay. Ever. But still good to know he had that planned anyway :)

Didn't think for one minute he'd go anywhere else ! but in today's game where money is the master it makes a refreshing change to se a player with such dedication and loyalty to a single club.
Having said that in the words of our sponsors we're probably (definately) the best club in the world ! ;D

I was scared about him leaving to Chelsea or Real Madrid in 2005 and 2006 and this year in Manchester City but now i feel very good and i think he will stay till he ends his career. Also i think he will be a successful manager.
