      Liverpool's Hard Pubs.
      Jan 02, 2009 06:00:15 pm
I have to ask, are there any hard pubs in Liverpool now.

Back in the 70,s I used to go away to sea for 4 months at a time, one time I was on leave for 2 months, I was down in my dads pub on the dock road, and my dads boss came in, and we where talking and asked me how I was doing, I said I was bored, only been home for 2 weeks. So he asked me If I would like a little job for 4 weeks as a head barman, I said great where do you want me to go, he said the Eagle & Child in Page Moss. I new nothing about the pub, so he said can you start tomorrow, and I said yes, and off went my dads boss, saying goodbye to my dad.

About 10Min's later my dad asked what we where talking about, so I told him about the job for 4 weeks. Well to say my dad went a bit mad, he was jumping up and down saying no son of mine is working in that pub, and he tryed the rest of the day to get hold of his boss, but could not, so I said to my dad I will try it, I have given my word to be there at 10 the next morning.

By this time lots of people had told me lots of stories about the Eagle and Child. So the next morning I left my flat on edge lane to start work in the pub, lets just say I was shiting myself, after all the stories I had been told about it.
For those who don't know it, it was a big pub in Page Moss, it used to be one big pub, but they found out one manger could not run the pub, so they put a  bricked wall down the middle, so you could not get from one half to the other with out going outside, and it was run by two mangers.

The half I was in, was the lounge, it would sit about 4 to 500, god it was big. After a few days when they got to know me, and a good few dockers went in there who I new from my dads pub, I was OK. But I have to say it was one hard pub, if a fight broke out the police would not come into the pub, they used to wait out side for the ones who where trown out.

I have to say, after the 1st few days I had a great time there, you could buy anything in there. I remember saying to one of them that my mam and dad are thinking about buying a caravan in a few years so they can go on a few holls, f**k me a few days later the man came to me and said come outside and look at this, and there where two caravans there, he said what one would your dad like, I said they where only talking about it, and not for a few years, they have nowhere to put a caravan on the dock road.
Dam he says, I go back into the pub and 5Min's later there where two fire engines there, he had sent both of them on fire.

I will say it again, I had a great time there and was sorry when my time was up, and I went back for a lot of years just to say hello.

The Eagle & Child nick name was the Bird and the B***ard.

I could tell you lots of stories about this pub, but maybe later.

Do you know of any hard pubs, and do you have any stories to tell.

Had a few pints in a pub called the dart and shamrock on Gildart street once after a game. Some right shady characters in it. Didnt stay long enough to see it in full swing

My dad grew up right by the Eagle And Child mate, Fincham Close. He's always said that if people knew who you were, you'd be alright. But if you weren't known, then you could cut the atmosphere with a knife if you walked in.

One time he went in there with his mate, Liverpool beat Bristol city 3-1 that day. When he went in the whole place went quiet and it was heaving. There was mesh on the bar. He asked the woman for two pints and when she turned round she had a big shiner! Thankfully some fella came up to him, tapped him on the shoulder and said 'how's your auld fella lad'. After that everyone started talking again....  :lmao:

Never went in the Eagle and Child, and it's not there anymore.

Last time I was in Liverpool I ended up in some pub between the cinema and the bus station. No idea what it was called but it seemed dodgy enough.

Small world indeed!!! Did you ever go in the Bluebell down the road from it? That was a rough one - only just been knocked down as well.

The Dog And Gun in Crocky was another one.

We had just been in the Odeon and the pub was very close, pretty sure it was London Rd because we just nipped out and crossed the road to head down toward the coach station.

Still a boozer, called the Wheatsheaf - to the right, where the old rose and crown bar was, not Mr Q's, is now a chinese, still haven't been in though - used to love the rose in my old college days.

How about The Quiet Man (now shut down) also The Boundary, The Huyton Park and The Hillside - all rougharse Huyton boozers.

And I always thought it was the Liffy (from what I've heard, it can be a bit rough), The Penny Farthing used to be a boss little boozer for starting in before hitting town.

Can believe JD hasn't mentioned the boozer in Prescot, well known for a bad rep!

The Eagle and Child brings back many memories for me as I grew up in that area,I had my first pint in the Eagle at the tender age of 16.I sat by the door watching in case my Dad came in as he would of given me a kick up the ar*e.Just after the war there was big battle and the local lads ran the yanks out of Page Moss and back to Burtonwood. In the 50s and 60s if you asked anyone who went to sea for directions they would say go to the Walkers turn right till you come to the Bents then turn left, carry on and you will come to a Threlfalls and its just over the road from there.I drank in all the pubs in Page Moss over the years, the Bow,Farmers Arms,Hillside,Bluebell,Oak Tree.A good pub was the Albert in Paddington.

I'm not really clued up on the hard boozers as none of them are actually hard pubs any more. Just full of knobheads who think they're hard.

It's a stark contrast to days of old when it was proper men who were just out on the ale with their mates. Nowadays it's dick head lads who are literally out on a mission to have a scrap. I'm not glorifying the old ways of scrapping but it's certainly a little rosier than whipping a knife out or smashing a pint glass over someones head. Says a lot when most clubs are edging towards plastic pint glasses and bottles as a rule rather than a choice.

      Sound so old don't I? :D

Id imagine Liverpools hard pubs are more in the estates then town are they? I know here in Dublin there isnt many hard pubs in the centre of town where you have tourists but head towards the docks and out to the suburbs the more common they are

Not many hard pubs in Dublin city centre at all. Definitely the further you move from the river though! The George, what a tacky place. Not my favourite bar in the world!

I was having a bevvy in Dublin last year and we went to some bar called Fitzgerald's, by the main road with that big needle thing and all the arcades. Close to the bridge over the river.

An old fella started kicking off and the barman just walked upto him and picked him up and removed him from the premises, to put it lightly.

The Temple Bar wasn't a hard bar. We had a grin in there and I spent €25 on a round of Guiness, but I wouldn't say the atmosphere was too bad.

      To dispel my ignorance.....

      The Spire of Dublin

The latest piece of amazing architecture to be unveiled in Ireland is the Spire of Dublin, known locally as the Millennium Spire. This is a giant spike made of burnished steel which sits in the centre of Dublin's main street, O'Connell Street.

The Spire is enormous, standing at 120 metres high (about 400 feet). That's not all that high compared with such notables as the Empire State Building (443m) or the Eiffel Tower (320m), but the impact of the Spire is great because it is only about 3 metres (10 feet) wide at the base and it narrows to a point at the top. It looks like a giant sewing needle, as it soars into the sky above Dublin. The top section is drilled with hundreds of tiny holes, like a cheese grater, and is lit from below by lights inside the Spire, so that it glows. This serves not only as a focus for the upward-pointing feel of the construction, but also as a warning light for low-flying aircraft. The light mechanism can be lowered by a series of ropes and pulleys to allow the bulb to be changed, so nobody has to climb up inside the very narrow Spire.

      Anyways!  :ontopic:

The Quiet Man in Huyton.  Possibly the most ironic name for a pub in Britain.

Re the Eagle and Child,if my memory is correct the last manager to run it single handed was a man named Bradley. He was the manager in the 1950s/60s.It was when he retired the brewery decided it was too big for one manager and brought in two managers.I do not know how this worked as in those days it was still one big pub and there was no dividing wall.I had many a pint there on a Sunday dinner time discussing saturdays match

I don't think the Fusi has ever been a hard pub.  Even going back about 10/15 years it was always the pub to go to if you were about 15.

Don't think it deserves a place in this thread - the Tommy Halls in Prescot.  If it could seat more than 12 people I reckon that would be a hard pub - possibly the least pleasant drinking establishment I've ever been in.

That was the worst named alehouse ever, used to have a mate lived opposite. The Quiety was a rough house and it went right down the nick, it got torched and was closed for a while then it was completely refurbed and reopened then torched again. I believe it was demolished.

It's the top of Wavertree Rd, had a number of stabbings and shootings there over the years, the last shooting was last year.

Just thought on, think the bizzies closed it and there was a dispute about re-opening it again on account of all the kick offs in there. Haven't been past lately, well I have but never noticed if it was opened, think I was only in there once and we got that 'get the F**k out of here' feeling which we did.

One of the worst boozers we lived in (Mam was a Bass Relief) was the Cattlemarket in the swan (also my Aunties boozer for a while) , a fella got his head kicked in there by the bar and every time it got kicked you could hear the brass foot rest bong. Eventually it got stopped and he picked himself up and had a flap of skin hanging off his head, he put a soaking bar towel off the bar on it and finished his pint and left. We heard after that he went straight to the Eagle and finished his night there. My Arl fella also got an eye like an ostrich after being hit by a pool ball in one particular kick off.

I had my first pint in the Eagle as we used to call it back in 1955 at the tender age of 16,I sat in the corner shitting myself in case my Dad came in and saw me,luckily he didnt. Now the Eagle was a big pub by anyones standards and up to the 1960s it was managed by 1man,a man by the name of Bradley. When Bradley retired Bents made it to be run by 2 managers and the Eagle was split in half.It had a chequered career the old Eagle and just after the 2nd world war the local lads got fed up with the American military who were based in Burtonwood and took to them and had a sort out.The local lads did not like the idea of the Yanks pulling the local girls.I must say I never felt threatened  in the Eagle and often took my girl friend(now my Wife in there many times. I recall the lads playing pitch and toss outside the Eagle when the Eagle was closed and the coppers would walk past on the other side of the road as though they had not seen them.So many memories and so much to tell if only the Eagle and Child could talk.
