      You are a pundit right?
      Feb 01, 2009 10:52:57 pm
Is it just me that gets really aggitated when pundits/commentators mispronounce football players names!

The guy off ITV is the worst, sorry I'm not sure of his name, things that I have heard from him include 'Benanoun, Matserazi (Materazzi)'

And then today, I've noticed it a few times with him actually but will someone point out to Andy Gray that its not Boswingwa!

At the end of the day, it's their job, and they really shouldn't be getting these names wrong, not too mention that it puts a bad image onto the channel. Get it sorted!

Heard that today Ross. Very irratating.

I'm pretty sure it's David Pleat your on about on ITV. I've posted about him before on the forum and I'm convinced he does it on purpose!

Notice the majority say either "Herpia" or "Hipia". Same with Kuyt, when it's actually pronounced "Kowt", most of them say "Kooyt".

That is what I love about a majority of tv pundits. Most of them are crap managers who should have no right to critique good managers on their job
. Ruud failed as a manager in MLS for the love of god, he is hardly an expert to be telling other manager what they should be doing.

The only thing that bothers me is when English (British and North American) say Italian names and put a little Italian accent as they know how to speak the language.

One or two reasons for that either they're acting smug or taking the piss.

As for Ruud, forget the MLS and look at his time in charge of Chelsea and Newcastle, his teams were routine 3 pts for us.

Alan Shearer annoys me too. Says what he wants about managers, always criticising, yet when given golden opportunities to manage both Blackburn and Newcastle he turns them down without even giving it any thought. Apart from this I don't mind him too much but the hypocritical side gets on my tits!

      Today, Aston Villa vs Chelsea.

Andy Gray repeatedly calls Paulo Ferreira (Fer - rar -a) (Fer - rair - a). This is far from the first time I've heard him saying this.

It's just annoying. Why don't they say anything to him!

well....now....see....th ere is a difficulty with Dirk's name....there is how he pronounces it, there is how some Dutch people pronounce it, then there is an acceptable English way of pronouncing it.

Would you like to have a go at explaining EXACTLY how it should be pronounced? bear in mind that the first letter of many dutch names are not sounded anything close to how they sound in English, sounding more like the sound in Welsh when subject to the aspirate mutation. you may remember we had Bruce Groebellar (sp?) in goal for years and his name was always mispronounced or, as we might say, Anglicised.

by the way, the "Kite" version, though incorrect, is explained by the fact that the "uy" is often pronounced that way in Holland...the great Cruyff, who we tended to say as croy-ff is spoken as crife by most Dutch i knew. until i learned better i pronounced Dirk's name Kite.

Pundits in general are a joke.

Half the time they don't know what they're talking about, and they are negative bas**rds.

Why is it that everybody seems so negative about Liverpool too.

There's just something I really don't like about Ruud Gullit.

I can't quite make out what it is though - maybe he seems a little up his own arse? I'm not sure.

Although tonight McCallster and Salgado were on about how England should probably take Owen to the WC and Gullit was saying he's not sure. Which obviously I agreed with.
