I'm always on the look out for great albums, basically just post albums in here when they are released that you consider to be a must have.

I'm sure redkenny will agree with my first 'must have' album :)

It's definately going to be interesting. I was brought up on Green Day but personally I feel they have lost their greatness as the years have gone on. Let's see what they can come up with this time.

Have you heard any songs from it yet?

      Great topic this:

I'm listening to "Keep It Hid" by Dan Auerbrach a lot at the moment and can highly recommend it. It's sort of (stubbornly) retro blues/rock with lots of fuzzy guitar work but beautifully crafted.

I'm looking forward to Green Day's latest offering (their Foxboro Hot Tubs venture was excellent IMO) and will keep you posted when I *ahem, cough* get the hold of it - hopefully some day soon.

So far I've only been able to get the hold of a Demo of the single - "21st Century Breakdown" - a great, typically anthemic, GD tune.

DLS - I've caught The Enemy live a couple of times and they're a cracking wee act. This track sounds a bit heavier than their normal fare but that ain't a bad thing - it's whet my appetite. :action-smiley-035:

21st Century Breakdown - Green Day
      Out soon

I actually cannot wait for that! I LOVE Green Day. It's been a while since American Idiot so I'll be interested to hear any changes to their music.

It's definately going to be interesting. I was brought up on Green Day but personally I feel they have lost their greatness as the years have gone on. Let's see what they can come up with this time.

Sorry but I dont agree. American Idiot was more mature and gave their own look at the politics of today. The songs had more relevence to what alot of people were feeling at the time particularly towards the Bush administration. You could see the effort that was put into it. That said their previous albums were great also. :)

Yeah, I appreciate all that, don't get me wrong, it was a good album.

What I meant really was the whole American Idiot era, I thought they had become too commercialised, released ridiculous merchandise and in my opinion kind of sold themselves a bit.

I see what you mean. But really that is the only way to get to the mainstream, commercialisation. They are very much in the mainstream now so I hope to see them go back to Green Day the band, not the brand.

I've been reading a few articles about the new album and it sounds great. There is supposed to be 16 songs on the album and it will be broken into 3 pieces. I think there is a short demo of the opening track on their official website?

"No Love Lost" was a great album, "The Great Escape" sounds sort of different but its still good, its a departure from their first album which isnt always a bad thing if you know what i mean.

"sometimes" is a great song, actually i thnk "the great escape", "Fool to sorrow" "sometimes" and romeo and julie" are my favorite songs on the album, also would recommend "here we stand" by the fratellis, it came out in mid 2008 i thnk...

I'd "got" The Rifles "The Great Escape" a wee while back but hadn't listened to it much. I've just revisited  on your recommendation DLS - it ain't the worst album in the world and "Sometimes" is fine ditty but overall I found the album a bit light weight. Maybe it's an age thing but, of late, I'm a bit weary of the Brit Indie "sound".........it's all beginning to sound a tad wishy-washy - I tend to need a bit more Oomph.

Now having said that - I'm gonna contradict myself   :-\ - I reckon The View's "Which bi*ch" is a must have for 2009! It's very well produced and is a more mature sound than "Hat's Off..."

I think, if you like The Rifles - you'll love this.

This is what NME say about the Enemy's new album - Music For The People

      http://www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=10&title=the_enemy_music_for_the_people_the_first&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

By the looks of it, doesn't sound great. But these people are paid to be critical and it'd take the work a true lyrical genius to even come close to We'll Live and Die in These Towns.

My review of Music For The People by the Enemy would be something along these lines.

Elephant Song - Intro goes on a bit too long, bit like Champagne Supernova by Oasis but the lyrics are again superb.

No Time For Tears - Fantastic. Just a beast of a song.

51st State - Political song about the war in Iraq I think. Says what so many of us felt at the time.

Sing When You're In Love - My fave on the album. Slower than the opening three, but really is a boss song. (plus it mentions the city of Liverpool ;D) Love the final verse as well "Every tear in your eye, every lump in your throat, every beat of your heart, that won't let you let go"

Last Goodbye - Another slow song and another belter. Struck me as a cross between Oasis and The Verve.

Nation Of Checkout Girls - Back to traditional Enemy. Quick and loud and of course boss. Maybe influenced by Blur's Common People (the only Blur song I like as it goes) but with the Enemy's own style on it.

Be Somebody - Quality song. The Enemy at their best this, singing about things that people can relate to. Lyrically brilliant and possibly one of the best lyrics I've ever heard "there's more to life than they teach you at school"

Don't Break The Red Tape - Another quality, political, song. What an opening verse "Welcome to England where there is no fun, where there is no choice for any of us, where there is no left, there is no right, New Labour's a new joke, just another Thatcherite." London Calling by the Clash (their best song in my opinion) can certainly be heard in this song but again it's not a copy because it has the Enemy's twist on it.

Keep Losing - Great start to the song, but sort of tails off. Probably the second worst song on the album (behind Elephant Song) in my opinion.

Silver Spoon - Sounds a bit like the Who during their Tommy album. But being as big a fan of the Who as I am, I really enjoyed the song and a good way to cap the album off.

Overall the album is quality and I can't see meself turning it off for a while. So glad to of got it and the boys have done themselves proud again. Following up to We'll Live And Die In These Towns would be difficult for any band, but I honestly think the Enemy have managed to follow up such a good debut album with a cracking second album as well.

Listening to Green Day - "21st Century Breakdown" right now and I'm sitting here like a dog with two dicks. ;D

      F***ing brilliant!

lt's still got all the energy and urgency of punk but the lads have also thrown everything else in on top: piano ballads, big sweeping classical Rock guitars and massive music shifts. The album (18 tracks) is almost conceptual (like American Idiot) and is broken into three parts: Heroes & Cons, Charlatans & Saints, and Horseshoes & Hand grenades.

      "East Jesus Nowhere"......... :action-smiley-035:

I'm sorta speechless to be honest.......best album of the year by a mile (In My opinion).

I can't wait for the new Editors album to be released, it could be as early as this summer so I'm really looking forward to it. One of my favourite bands.

From what I've heard everything's sounding pretty good and I'm sure it's going to be one of the 'must haves' of the year.

Kasabian's new album in June. Mega band!

I'm listening to "West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum" right now. When i first heard it (Sunday) i wasn't too sure as it's a bit of a mixed bag pace (and style) wise but the more i've listened to it; the more i'm smitten. It does grow.

It's most definitely adventurous but the Primal Scream /Stone Roses influence can still be picked out. This could be massive and coupled with the fact that Kasabian are second only to Muse as Britain's best live act: it promises to be a good summer for their fans (me included).

Loving "Vald The Impaler", "West Ryder/Silver Bullet" & "Fire"........ ;D

I don't see the hype with 21st Century Breakdown TBH.

Green Day is one of my favourite bands, they always have been & always will be.  But I find that most of the tracks on the album are a bit too 'slow', a few slow songs are good but it's overrun with that type.

American Idiot has a lot more energy to the album.  And if you would like me to name and shame the tracks off 21stCBD, feel free to ask.

OK!  Consider this an unofficial review!  ;)

      1) Song Of The Century
Reminds me of something off Bioshock. Catchy intro.

      2) 21st Century Break Down
I was waiting expecting a really trademark Green Day kick in. It didn't happen. It's an alright track though, but it's a bit slow for a full opening song. Should of had high energy, maybe Know Your Enemy should of been 2nd in the list?

      3) Know Your Enemy
This is my favourite song on the album, without question. Classic Green Day, absolutely love it. Energy, riffs, great rhythm, superb.

      4) ¡Viva La Gloria!
This is definitely where a slow song should come in, a few tracks just after the start, although it's very deceiving, it'll surprise you of how powerful this song becomes. Quality.

      5) Before The Lobotomy
Another slow starter, but it's another one of my favourite tracks, because it's got an unexpected turn to the track. Great riffs and energy after the 1 minute mark.

      6) Christian's Inferno
It's got a good punk start with a punk edge. Then it slips in and out of the distorted guitars with a newer punk style. It's good.

      7) Last Night On Earth
Nearly fell asleep with how boring this song is.  Another SLOW song, a few's not bad, but when you hear them constantly it becomes tedious.

      8 ) East Jesus Nowhere
Catchy from the start, this is another track that I fully expected Green Day to deliver on, and they did. Top draw.

      9) Peacemaker -
Quite a weird track TBH.  Reminds me of something you'd here in the streets of Spain.  I do actually like this.

      10) Last Of American Girls
It's up and down this track.  Slow, quick, catchy riffs.  A bit of a round up of the first 9 tracks!

      11) Murder City
      A decent track.

      12) ¿Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl)
Slow start AGAIN.  It's another weird track, reminds me of something you'd here on the silver screens, like Charlie Chaplin!  But then you hear "Run awayyyyyyy"

      13) Restless Heart Syndrome
Quite depressing TBH.  Very, very slow.  Until the end.

      14) Horseshoes And Handgrenades
A bit 'electro' this song.  But it's got some really good energy!

      15) The Static Age
A decent start, it's also an OK song.

      16) 21 Guns
      Another slow F***ing track. FFS

      17) American Eulogy (Mass Hysteria/Modern World)
A bit strange, it plays the opening of the album again.  Then kicks in.  Hmm...

      18) See The Light
Another strange one, had to check that my iPod wasn't on shuffle.  I don't know why they've added the same starts again on the last two tracks, because they're near the same as 1 & 2.  I liked this track eventually though.

So... overall, a little bit disappointed, one or two tracks could make the final greatest hits when it's all over, let's just hope that's not for a long time yet!  I hope they release at least one more album after this one.

I like the slower ones that they do, it's different but good different imo, they use the piano alot more in this than before which was a cool twist. But my favorites have to be; Know your enemy, East Jesus Nowhere, Horseshoes and Handgrenades, Christians Inferno and 21st Century Breakdown

Crack The Skye by Mastodon is a prog/sludge/metal/rock epic.

Looking forward to the Arctics, Josh Homme(QOTSA) produced it.  Suppose to be really Cream/Zepp/Sabbath influenced.

Them Crooked Vultures - 'Them Crooked Vultures'.

      Doves - 'Kingdom Of Rust'.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 'It's Blitz'.

Mmm, I think that's it. I hoped Them Crooked Vultures would be the album of the year, but they really dissapointed me :( Saw them perform live this summer, awesome performance. But their album sounds too clean and overproduced for my taste.

      5. Marked Men - Ghosts

      4. The Budos Band - EP (not least because I have friends in the band)

      3. We Were Promised Jetpacks - These Four Walls (terrible name, great album)

      2. Superchunk - Sur La Bouche--Live in Montreal 1993 (a bit of a cheat, but it only came out this year)

      1. Obits - I Blame You

      Honorable mentions:
Superchunk - Leaves in the Gutter EP
Lee Fields & The Expressions - My World

The Phantom Band - Checkmate Savage.

I saw these guys at Sound City and they were totally amazing. Best thing I'd heard in ages. Bought their new album and I've listened to it almost non-stop since. I'd heard they were from Glasgow but when I spoke to one of them, he said his family were all scouse and LFC fans. So my opinion of them went up even more!

Other than that, I've liked Doves, White Denim, Camera Obscura and a few others. But Checkmate definitely comes out on top!

      Ne-Yo (Year of the Gentleman)

If you love your R&B and some easy going tunes, then this is up your ally! I'm in love with Ne-Yo. Every song is aimed at a female and heartbreak or love in this album.

      Brilliant album.

^^ Might check that one out crouchy. Ain't heard much of his stuff, but that song 'Closer' is one of my all time favs.

Still think Wolfmothers new one is a must have for anyone into good rock music!

EDIT: Temper Trap is tops, good shout RK.

It was some of Ne-Yo's other stuff that i fell in love with. It started with songs like Miss Independent, Closer, Mad and Part of the List but now they're on the backburners and i skip to other songs. Great album, especially for your lady friend when she's around ;)

Fader is in my top songs of the year, for sure. Love it when it pops up on my shuffle playlist in the car.

Never fails to lift me up that song. Think it's gonna be their next release isn't it? Or is it already out?

You're not in Australia now mate. And I'm in Liverpool.  ;) Think they're only just hitting the 'scene properly' here.

Downloaded this a couple of weeks ago, on the strength or your recommendation BR (i'd never heard of The Obits) - me likey.  :gt-happyup:

Another one for my list of 'must haves' is Riverboat Gamblers - 'Underneath The Owl' ....This Texas band are bit more obscure for U.K. music fans but in my opinion the best 'punk' album of the year. It's more than just a 'punk' album tho' - it's complex, mature and energetic - F***ing brilliant, to be honest. My favourite track? .......'Victory Lap'

Glad you like it. To be honest I like all of his (Rick Froberg's) old bands better (Hot Snakes - top 5 all-time for me - and Drive Like Jehu), but it's all relative.

I'm a fan of Riverboat Gamblers, too. Those guys are in a bunch of different bands (High Tension Wires, The Chopsakis,The Potential Johns), but my favorite is actually my number 5 on this year's must have... Marked Men. Great, great punk band. "Ghosts" was really good, but their last album, "Fix My Brain", is the one to check out imo. Of course, I don't think you can go wrong with any of their music.

Don't know how many on here agree that Manic Street Preachers' Journal for Plague Lovers was a quality album?
