Update: 6th April 2009 - CD now released - Order it now - more info

      Link for iTunes

      iTunes ep £3.06

      includes

      - Fields of Anfield Road (Kop Choir)
      - Heart as big as Liverpool (Pete Wylie)
      - Turning the Town Red (Elvis Costello)
      - Fields of Anfield Road [Sunday Morning Version] (James Walsh)

LIVERPOOL hopes to land a number one hit single to mark the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough.

Former Reds players and music stars are launching a bid to top the charts on on April 15.

Famous faces and Hillsborough families have recorded a version of classic Kop anthem Fields of Anfield Road .

Liverpool legends including John Aldridge, Kenny Dalglish, Bruce Grobbelaar, Alan Kennedy, Howard Gayle and Phil Thompson feature on the record.

Ex La’s and Cast singer John Power provided the lead vocal for the track which was recorded at the city’s Elevator studio, in Cheapside.

Fomer Farm frontman Peter Hooton has composed a new poignant fourth verse for the much-loved anthem

Part of it goes: “...I hear the Kopite mourning. Why so many taken on that day. Justice has never been done, But the memories will carry on.”

The Picket's Phil Hayes, who lost a cousin at Hillsborough, was project manager for the recording and worked alongside Kevin McManus from creative company Merseyside ACME.

Scouser Ken Nelson, who produced Coldplay’s hit albums, is involved in the project.

Also featured on the record is a member of Echo & The Bunnyman and Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon from pop act China Crisis.

Liverpool Mayor Cllr Steve Rotheram, who went to the ill-fated FA Cup semi-final clash against Nottingham Forest, said: “Our ambition is to get to the top of the charts to commemorate the loss of 96 lives.

“It’s about telling a story of how these people went out to watch a football match and never came home.

“It’s a contemporary version, a bit faster than the original so people can sing along to it.

“It was an emotional experience recording the song in the studio. There were a lot of people crying.

“We hope everyone in Merseyside will get behind it, Red and Blue.”

Phil Hayes, from The Picket, said:

“It’s a joyous song and it was brilliant to get everybody there and even some of the families.”

The single will be available to download and could be sold in music stores.

The owner of the copyright to both Fields of Anfield Road and the original Irish classic Fields of Athenry both waived a fee for the Liverpool single.

And the cost of hiring out the studio was met by the Lord Mayor’s charity.

The track will be released on March 26

" March 26th band members from the farm, la's, & echo n the bunny men r realeasin the fields of anfield road on single 2 co-incide wi the 20th anniversary of hillsborough an they aim 2 get it 2 no. 1, so download it n pass this msg 2 any other red or blue and get them 2 dowload it JUSTICE 4 THE 96"
I've passed it on and thought it might be an idea, for everyone on here to send a text out to their mates too, not everyone maybe aware and hopefully it will raise awareness and hopefully get it to number 1

I'll be surprised if there's any left in Liverpool either.  Wanted to get a physical copy of it - but if HMV online aren't expecting it in for 21 days then they've obviously done a limited run, which is a bit of a shame.

I think they sold out at Anfield of 300 this morning and then got another batch in this afternoon which we're flying off the shelves.

I don't understand how it works, but I think Liverpool FC are obviously not on the database or whatever that makes up the charts.  Fair play, the profits still going to charity and everything but it's going to impact on the charts and the awareness of it? :(

There will be F***ing loads of people buying it Wednesday night etc.  And I'd imagine tons of people at the club shop in town as well.

Real shame that, but then, when has anything involving our club surprised you?

It's not on top songs at the moment.  I think most people are buying the EP because it's only £3 which is classed as an album.

Not sure how often it gets updated but it was 8th last time I checked and it had all the bars filled for 'popularity'.

There will be f**king loads of people buying it Wednesday night etc.  And I'd imagine tons of people at the club shop in town as well.

Real shame that, but then, when has anything involving our club surprised you?

I suppose the money is still going to the cause but like you said, it will effect the awareness. Which will probably effect the sales.

Just to clarify for late joiners

*Please note, whilst the CD can be purchased from LFC Club Shops, only songs downloaded from i-tunes, or purchased from HMV will count towards the official chart position.

Seeing as HMV look like they've sold out if you're buying a copy from any of the club stores, make sure you do the iTunes thing as well for the charts.

I've just been checking out the rules and regulations regarding distribution of singles and albums.

The Officlal U.K. Chart Company state that they use a sample of distributors around the U.K. like Virgin megastores, HMV, Tesco's, e.t.c.
If one store name is picked it doesn't follow that all that names stores are used some stores may not be used as MAY be the case with the club shop !
It's not a fix !, if all the stores from one name were used then that named store could be targeted from all over the U.K. and it COULD be fixed to Orchestrate a particular release getting to No.1.

There are stores that are fitted with the means of recording sales that aren't used to prevent staff from stores doctoring the sales or indeed telling customers to use there store as it is one used by the chart company.

I hope this clears things up a little.

Piece of piss isn't it! Good lad.

As for the comment before about the HMV in Newcastle. Shocking that. Should have been released nationwide.  Let's face it, if it had been a Manc song it would have been.

Definitely hope the cu*ts go down now. ;)

Surprising but I suppose it is two seperate groups at the end of the day. Plus I'm not too sure Gerry would have much room to stock them.

The album of this with the other songs 'Heart as big as Liverpool' and 'Turning the Town Red' is currently number nine in the iTunes charts.

It would be very fitting if we could get either the song or the album (or even both ;D) to number one for the anniversary so I urge everyone on this forum to buy the song or album.

Yes it goes towards the chart position.

      Chart position is affected by:
Downloads (only from itunes and other legal sites, hmv etc)
CD sales from shops: HMV, Tesco, ASDA, pretty much all big shops that sell CDs

It might go even further next week when HMV finally send out the CD's bought online!
