A brilliant goal from England Youth international striker Craig Lindfield earned Liverpool Reserves a deserved 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground.
The only goal of the game came five minutes before half-time when Lindfield chased a loose ball out on the left wing. The striker then cut inside the penalty area before unleashing a fine strike from a tight angle that bent inside the top corner of the net.

It was a goal that will give Lindfield a lot of confidence ahead of Saturday's FA Youth Cup 4th round meeting against Chelsea at Anfield, and the striker led the forward line superbly ably supported by Moroccan Nabil El Zhar who worked his socks off.

Gary Ablett's young team played some excellent football and were unlucky not to have won by a greater margin with Lindfield, Miki Roque and Robbie Threlfall all coming close to scoring.

Godwin Antwi was named captain for the first time and the 18-year-old from Ghana led by example with a fine performance at the back against the experienced Neil Shipperley.

Academy utility player Jay Spearing was given his first start for the second string and he had a superb match in central midfield. Spearing is a fierce competitor and plays with so much passion and determination for the red shirt.

Adam Hammill caused the Blades defence problems all night with his dribbling ability and high tempo style of play.

Reds goalkeeper David Martin also had a good match and made two excellent saves at point blank range to deny Shipperley and Nicky Travis.

The fitness level of the Liverpool team was excellent on a heavy pitch and it is a great testament to the work of Spanish fitness coach Antonio Gomez who joined the Melwood staff this season.

After ending 2006 with a disappointing defeat at Bolton Ablett's side responded well in this match and the Reds coach will be hoping his side's consistency can improve as the rest of the season progresses.

Liverpool Reserves: Martin, Darby, Threlfall, Roque, Antwi, Spearing, Anderson, Idrizaj, Lindfield, El Zhar, Hammill. Subs not used: Burns, Mimms (GK), Ryan, Wignall, Putterill.

does anybody know if any of these players are knocking on the door for the 1st team

BOLO NAMED IN RESERVE SIDE TO PLAY UNITED

Bolo Zenden will step up his comeback from injury tonight when he lines up for the reserves against Manchester United at Hyde United FC (kick-off 7pm).
The Dutch midfieler has not tasted competitive action since injuring his knee against Manchester City in November.

He was an unused substitute at Upton Park on Tuesday and will be hoping to put himself in the frame for Saturday's Merseyside derby.

Gabriel Paletta, Lee Peltier, Nabil El Zhar and Danny Guthrie also figure for Gary Ablett's side.

      Team in full...

      1. David Martin
      2. Stephen Darby
      3. Robbie Threlfall
      4. Miki Roque
      5. Gabriel Paletta
      6. Lee Peltier
      7. Ryan Flynn
      8. Boudewijn Zenden
      9. Craig Lindfield
      10. Nabil El Zhar
      11. Danny Guthrie (Captain)

      Substitutes:-

      12. Jack Hobbs
      13. David Roberts
      14. Godwin Antwi
      15. Jay Spearing
      16. Michael Burns

Bolo Zenden made a successful return to action after injury when he played 45 minutes in the reserves goalless draw with Manchester United at Hyde United FC's Ewen Fields.
The Dutch international played his first game since he injured his knee against Manchester City back in November. Reds reserve team boss Gary Ablett also welcomed Jack Hobbs back to action when he replaced Zenden for the second half. The defender has missed most of the season so far with an ankle injury. Hobbs acquitted himself well in a holding midfield role and passed the ball well.

Ablett fielded a young team including four of the Youth Cup heroes who helped the Reds reach the quarter-finals last week in the form of Stephen Darby, Robbie Threlfall, Ryan Flynn and Craig Lindfield, while Jay Spearing and Michael Burns were on the bench.

Manchester United fielded a strong line-up including Alan Smith, Darren Fletcher, Mikael Silvestre, Wes Brown and Chinese international Dong.

Ablett will take a lot of positives from the game as his young team more than matched their more experienced United counter parts and with a little more luck might have taken all three points. In truth the game was hardly a classic but Liverpool competed very well.

In a fairly low key first half Liverpool twice came close to breaking the deadlock. On 40 minutes Lindfield was unfortunate to see his superb curled drive from the left side of the penalty area superbly saved by Tom Heaton. Then Moroccan Nabil El Zhar hit a rasping drive just over the bar.

Liverpool were excellent at the back and Godwin Antwi and Miki Roque were their usual solid as a rock selves. Indeed Roque made one fantastic block tackle to deny Fletcher.

In the second half Liverpool continued to press and Lindfield again was unlucky when he saw his effort from a tight angle pushed onto the post by substitute keeper Lee Crockett.

United almost won the game five minutes from time when Jamie Mullan failed to hit the target after a good cross from Smith then Dong hit the post from close range. Then in stoppage time Danny Guthrie went close for Liverpool after a late tackle denied him a clear run through on goal.

Manchester United Reserves: Heaton (Crockett 45), Lee, Lea, Fletcher (Burns 45), Silvestre, Brown, Mullan, Eagles, Smith, Dong, Evans (Barnes 60).

Liverpool Reserves: Martin, Darby, Threlfall, Roque, Antwi, Peltier, Flynn, Zenden (Hobbs 45), Lindfield, El Zhar (Burns 88), Guthrie. Subs not used: Roberts, Spearing.

      Referee: C Pawson

      An update on the reserves.

      Liverpool 2 - 0 Wigan

A dramatic impact from substitute Besian Idrizaj saw him score twice to give Liverpool Reserves a deserved 2-0 victory over a strong Wigan Athletic side at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground on Tuesday night.
The former Austrian young player of the year had only been on the field a matter of minutes when he scored with his first touch. On as a 71st minute substitute for Jordy Brouwer, Idrizaj smashed the ball into the net from close range after Craig Lindfield had flicked the ball on. It was a sweet moment for 'Bez' after he was sent-off for two bookable offences in last week's defeat at Middlesbrough.

Idrizaj was then unlucky to hit the post after a great run before he added a second goal 10 minutes from time with a fierce header from a corner. The forward has struggled for consistency at times this season but these two goals will have boosted his confidence.

Reds' reserve team manager Gary Ablett fielded the likes of January recruits Emiliano Insua, Ronald Huth, Brouwer and goalkeeper Daniele Padelli. Brouwer partnered youth team striker Lindfield in attack.

Wigan fielded an experienced line-up featuring the likes of club captain Arjan De Zeeuw, Paul Scharner, Andreas Johansson, Adreas Granqvist and striker Julius Aghahowa.

Ablett's side showed great enthusiasm and determination and there were many plus points to take from the game.

The away side started the brighter but despite their superior possession they couldn't break down the Liverpool defence marshalled superbly by the outstanding Jack Hobbs and Ronald Huth. Hobbs was playing his first game of the season in his preferred position of centre half and he made some excellent interceptions.

Liverpool, inspired by midfield workhorse and youth team captain Jay Spearing, began to get back into the match and Moroccan Nabil El Zhar was always threatening. He was so unlucky not to open the scoring after 20 minutes when he turned a defender inside out but was denied by a fine save from Russell Saunders.

El Zhar also went close after 31 minutes when he fired a fierce shot just wide and Craig Lindfield suffered a similar fate with a great strike six minutes later.

Liverpool always looked the more threatening in the second half and Idrizaj turned out to be the super sub on this occasion with his two goals to give Ablett's team the three points.

Liverpool Reserves: Padelli, Darby, Insua, Hobbs, Huth, Spearing (Barnett 88), Anderson, Flynn, Lindfield, Brouwer (Idrizaj 71), El Zhar (Burns 82). Subs' unused: Roberts (GK), Parsonage.

A fantastic goal from youth team captain Jay Spearing was the highlight of Liverpool Reserves' deserved 3-0 win over Newcastle United at Kingston Park on Monday night.
Spearing was the best player on the park and netted with a superb curled effort in the 73rd minute of the game. The young scouser has a tremendous will to win attitude and he inspires all around him with his passion and commitment. He spent the majority of last season recovering from a broken leg but he has made a strong return this season and his performance levels have been of a high standard.

Spearing also made the second goal for Craig Lindfield 10 minutes from time, with the striker finishing well from close range.

Another of the heroes from this season's youth cup team Ray Putterill added the third goal with a good finish two minutes from time on his reserve team debut.

Gary Ablett fielded a young team that featured five of the heroes who are in the youth team that has reached the final of the FA Youth Cup for the second season in succession. Spearing, Stephen Darby, Ryan Flynn, Robbie Threlfall and Lindfield all started for Ablett's side at Newcastle while Putterill, Martin Hansen, Michael Burns, Charlie Barnett and Michael Scott were on the bench.

Jack Hobbs captained the team and Paraguayan defender Ronald Huth partnered Gabriel Paletta at the heart of the Liverpool defence.

Newcastle also fielded a young team including the majority of the side that lost to Liverpool in the semi-final of the youth cup last week.

Liverpool played some fine football on a bitterly cold evening in the North East and the passing was of a high standard. Inspired by the promptings in midfield by Spearing and Hobbs the Reds took the game to Newcastle.

Lindfield, who scored twice for the youth team against Newcastle last week, on another day might have had a first half hat-trick. He curled one effort just wide and then saw Newcastle keeper Fraser Forster deny him with a brilliant point blank save. He also shot wide from the edge of the box after a tremendous burst into the Newcastle half from Argentine Emiliano Insua.

Liverpool kept up the pressure and a minute into the second half Hobbs was unlucky to see his deflected effort go just wide after a tremendous move.

Paul Anderson played up front for Liverpool and came close to scoring after 68 minutes but he just couldn't quite turn the ball towards goal as he tried to get on the end of Flynn's right wing cross.

The Reds pressure finally paid off after 73 minutes when they took the lead through Spearing's superb strike and then Lindfield added a deserved goal for himself on the night 10 minutes from time.

Substitute Putterill made it 3-0 two minutes from time to seal an excellent night's work for Ablett's side.

Newcastle United Reserves: Forster, Gate, Shanks, Doninger (Bertram 51), Ramage, Huntington, Troisi, Pattison ((Godsmark 45), Donaldson, Carroll, Lua Lua.

Liverpool Reserves: Padelli, Darby, Insua, Huth, Paletta, Hobbs, Anderson (Barnett 88), Flynn, Lindfield (Putterill 86), Spearing, Threlfall. Subs unused: Burns, Hansen (GK), Scott.

      Referee: R Wigglesworth.

Liverpoolfc.tv Man of the Match: Jay Spearing. Tremendous performance.

I think  Besian Idrizaj looks an interesting prospect, a left winger who had scored 4 in 8 until his loan move to Luton. I notice though he was subbed after 46 minutes in his debut for them but lets hope this was purely down to fitness and he can impress as much as Adam Hammill is doing on loan at Dunfermline. I also hope Paul Anderson is continuing to improve as I have’nt heard a lot about him this season this after all the excitement when we signed him and the performances he also produced in the youth cup.

Well there is slim chance I can go to Anfield games seeing that I live a good 200 miles away, even when I am up in Liverpool tickets seem hard to get. Unless I want to spend £60 on return train ticket and £30 on football ticket and £10 on food looks like £100 spent just to go to a game at Anfield, I'd rather stay at home and watch it on tv.

Now that's dedication for you. ;D

Do you really travel up North just to watch the reserves mate  ???

I think everyones quietly optimistic about him he did get his contract extended last year so He's tied to us until 2010,the fact that he can play up front or on the wing is useful and being capped at England under-19 level has also been a good experience for him. I suppose I  worry because he is not getting as many plaudits as some of the other players but maybe that's a good thing as Rafa has said that Anderson is one of the youngsters who he expects to break into the senior squad soon.

Moroccan starlet Nabil El Zhar scored a fine goal but it was to be in vain as Liverpool Reserves let a lead slip as they lost 3-1 at Manchester City on Monday night.
Gary Ablett fielded a young side including Dutch striker Jordy Brouwer, Argentine pair Gabriel Paletta and Emiliano Insua, Italian goalkeeper Daniele Padelli and Paraguayan centre half Ronald Huth. Trialist Reneil Sappleton was on the bench and the young striker came on for the final 13 minutes of the game.

Jack Hobbs captained the team and played in a midfield holding role just in front of the back four. City also fielded a young team plus senior first team squad regulars goalkeeper Nicky Weaver and Stephen Jordan.

Liverpool dominated the first half and played some good attacking football. El Zhar gave the Reds the lead after 14 minutes with a great finish after a superb pass from Hobbs gave him the opportunity.

Paul Anderson had some lively moments in the first half for Liverpool on the right wing and twice came close to scoring in the opening 45 minutes when he hit two powerful low shots just off target.

Robbie Threlfall worked hard on the left flank and was denied a goal after 21 minutes when his curled free-kick was well kept out by Weaver.

Brouwer came close to his first goal after 42 minutes when he shot just wide after excellent approach play.

Liverpool weren't as effective in the second half as they were in the first and were soon made to pay for sloppy defensive work. City equalised in the 52nd minute when Ched Evans was left totally unmarked in the Liverpool penalty area as he met a cross to send a looping header past Padelli and into the net.

Two minutes later a superb pass from Brouwer set up a chance for Ryan Flynn but his effort brought a fine save from Weaver.

Padelli then made a couple of excellent saves before City grabbed their winning goal in the 76th minute. Paul Marshall raced past Stephen Darby down the left flank before his cross was met by Marc Laird who found the net.

City made sure of the three points in stoppage time when substitute Adam Clayton netted from close range. It was a dramatic impact from Clayton who had only been on the field for about 30 secons.
