Anybody got a list of the horses yet?

Next Saturday, don't forget it. It's the only horse race I take any notice of, it's always a good laugh.

I always pick horses that have some meaning to me so I'm gonna pick My Will (lucky he's the favourite at the mo) and Flintoff, I love me cricket so have to put a quid on that horse.

There is usually a pull out in the daily papers on the Wednesday before the race, so good luck DLS, I have been lucky in this race for the past 5 years , getting at least two of the horses in the first four.

I like to watch the fillies going past ours on the Friday.  :f_whistle:

You're right though, it's always a good buzz.

Here's a list of the runners. I'm gonna do Iron Man again - bit of a reference to Tommy Smith. 100-1 but you never know.

First Grand National where I haven't been working in Aintree and having half an hour thrown on to my journeys so I'm sure I will enjoy this one a bit more!

Haven't been there for a good 5 years or so now, I always think about going but it seems to come round before I know it.

Might go for a few that I feel are quite apt:

Eurotrek (got to be a Liverpool related on that)

A few people in my college are working there, glass collecting. They've got a few more people they need to get to do it with them so hopefully i'll have a bit of work going too :)

Who you backing for the national ?

I've put some money on Butlers Cabin (who I reckon you've backed as well mate). Also done Big Fella Thanks, Snowy Morning and Fleet Street as an outsider (i like the red and white  ;))

Butlers Cabin is McCoy's horse Kenny mate, so I'd stay well clear. He still hasn't won the National.

My Will - the horse I've gotta pick just for the name - is fave at the moment and is being rode by Ruby Walsh, two time National winner. So I'm quite pleased with that choice

Lately I have been taking some very strong painkillers and besides doing their job they also seem to have
given me the intellect of a spam fritter! I was asked for a tip for the National as I have been known to follow the horses (we have lovely roses) anyway I get online and google a list of national runners to pick a likely winner from.

I then trundle into work yesterday giving a good impression of Forrest Gump on a day out and tell anyone who will listen that Numbersixvalverde is my tip for the top. Today I have stopped the Strong painkillers because not only is Numbersixvalverde not going to win the National he is not even running in it ! It seems Numbersixvalverde was forced to retire in January 2009 due to an ongoing leg injury, and the horse had even been sidelined due to injury since the 2007 Grand National!

unfortunately the list I had Googled was from 2006 when the horse actually won it and so my local bookmakers will be pestered tomorrow by people trying to place bets on a horse that hasn't even seen a course for the last two years ::)

After that tale my actual tips would be

      Rambling Minster

      Brooklyn Brownie

      Devon Loch ;)

Thrown a few quid on the ones I selected before.

Only because I had already said them and to then not back them could have been dangerous.

I think it collapsed on the run in to the line.  I hate to see that, takes the shine off the National.

So nobody had the winner then?  I'm shocked and surprised.  But then all the outsiders would have been the £1 bets not the huge bets.

I'm sure the bookies we're over the moon with yesterday's result.  They will have made a fortune.

I bet you everyone will be going mad on the outsiders next year. ;)

That's it now for outsiders, at least for the next 30 odd years if the winner's form is anything to go by! :D

      Foinavon
One of the fences in the Grand National is called The Foinavon Fence. This fence is named after the 1967 Winner. The remarkable thing about this winner is not that he came in at odds of 100/1, but that he was a relative no-hoper who was far enough behind to miss the carnage at the fence which now bears his name.

Foinavon started his life belonging to Anne, Duchess of Westminster and he was named after a Scottish mountain, as was another of her horses the great Arkle . After racing in Ireland early in his career he was sold because his jumping was so poor! Even so he had won three chases previously, however, he did have a tendency to fall.

He was sent to John Kempton's yard, and John decided to send the horse hunting to improve his confidence, he also put him over small training fences every day.
Watch Foinavon winning the 1967 Grand National

This so called no-hoper had taken part in some top class races before attempting the national, he had finished fourth in a King George and took part in a Gold Cup at Cheltenham, given these facts it would seem that his odds of 100/1 may have been a bit generous unless of course, you consider the S.P. on the Tote of 444/1.

On the day of the race his trainer, who also was a jockey could not make the 10st weight that the horse was due to carry, so he went to Worcester to ride another horse that day, so the replacement Jockey was John Buckingham.

Going around on the first circuit nothing seemed remarkable about the race and the horses still in the race were going as well as could be expected, even at Bechers on the second circuit all horses seemed to get over the fence alright but no one could have guessed what was in store at the next fence which was one of the smallest fences the jockeys and horses had to jump that day. There were a few riderless horses at the front of the leading pack and when they got to the fence, they decided not to jump the fence but as often happens, they decide to run along the width of the fence.

Other horses which came up behind decided that there must have been something frightening at the fence because the leaders also began to refuse. The following horses then started to slow down as they were not going fast enough to jump the fence and either fell or quickly stopped, only to throw their jockey's over the fence, this resulted in horses starting to run back up the course where they came from.

There was utter chaos with both horses and riders alike falling or being thrown to the ground, this can been seen here with jockey P.Buckley trying to get his mount Limeking ( Number 9 ) to his feet, it looked like the race was over for everyone, however Foinavon's jockey who was at the back of the field saw all this carnage in front of him guided his mount around the mêlée and fortunately the horse was quick thinking enough to glide to the outside of the fence, and although going considerably slower than racing speed the horse managed to jump the fence successfully and both man and horse were off to complete the course.

John said later that at the time he did not realize that they were the only pair to jump the fence at the first attempt but he just kept going. Although some 17 horses remounted and finished the race the distance Foinavon had ' stolen ' at the fence meant that he lead over the final seven fences to go on to collect his prize.

Foinavon did run in the following years Grand National but fell or was brought down at the water jump.

Me Uncle picked Foinavon when he was a kid, only for me Grandad to think he was being daft when he went the bookies and changed it to something more 'reputable'. Obviously, it came in and me Uncle was a bit pissed off. Me Grandad boxed him off with a few quid but the actual winnings would have been a lot better! :D
