City were still sh*t last night. With or without Tevez. Swap deal for a midfielder would be ideal for them. That and get Rafa. Obviously I hope they do neither

Tevez banned for two weeks - and City are ready to sack him
Troublesome striker is ordered to stay away from training while the club carry out rigorous investigation

By Ian Herbert, Northern Football Correspondent
      Thursday, 29 September 2011

Carlos Tevez was last night suspended for two weeks and told to stay away from Manchester City pending an investigation into his conduct during the Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich, with his club not ruling out the prospect of ripping up his contract and sacking him.

City said the Argentine – who is suspended on full pay – will "not be considered for selection or take part in training" during the investigation into why he did not enter the field of play in the Allianz Arena. City's decision to suspend him was communicated in a letter couriered to his representatives yesterday. It reflects a sense from the highest level of the club that manager Roberto Mancini in no way overreacted when he declared, in a post-match press conference, that the Argentine was "finished" at the club.

Aware that Tevez's representative, Kia Joorabchian, will not flinch from a legal battle with them, City will undertake a rigorous investigation into what occurred during the second half against the German side, before making any move against Tevez. The player insisted through his representatives' spokespeople yesterday that he was victim of a "misunderstanding", claiming he merely refused Mancini's demand that he leave the dug-out for a second warm-up, rather than refuse to enter the field of play. This flatly contradicted the player's claim on Tuesday night that he "didn't feel" he was "right to play."

City, who have only recently concluded a root-and-branch investigation which resulted in their former chief executive, Garry Cook, leaving the club, will embark on a similar exercise with Tevez. They will seek witnesses from all possible vantage points, with the then-unused substitutes – Pablo Zabaleta, Joleon Lescott, James Milner and Aleksandar Kolarov – becoming key witnesses. Mancini's assistant, David Platt, who also had an impeccable vantage point, is a witness who does not feel there was any misunderstanding about the Italian's request that Tevez enter the game. Television footage and interviews will also be examined.

The view from inside the game – and from some legal specialists – is that Tevez is in breach of contract and that the club would be within their rights to rip up his contract for an act of gross misconduct. Senior sources at the Premier League certainly believe that is the case and the vice president of Fifa, Jim Boyce, indicated last night that they would not be unsympathetic if City took such a course of action. "Fifa should have the power, as they do for drugs-related cases... to ban the player from taking an active part in football," he said. A fine of two weeks' wages – the maximum punishment under Professional Footballers' Association rules – is likely to be the first punishment Tevez receives.

The club's Abu Dhabi owners involved themselves yesterday in the initial task of analysing the 27-year-old's £250,000-a-week contract to establish whether they can dismiss him, though doing so does have drawbacks. The club paid well over £25m and possibly £45m – neither City nor Joorabchian has been willing to divulge the figure – and they were demanding £40m for him this summer because their attempts to break even and comply with financial fair play regime will not be enhanced by writing off that kind of figure.

On the other hand, the salary Tevez commands – £1m a month – means that by terminating the contract 30 months before it expires they could save as much as £30m. City could also use the Adrian Mutu precedent to pursue Tevez for the cost of his future transfer fee: Chelsea secured £14.6m in damages from Romanian Mutu in 2009 through Fifa's dispute resolution chamber after the striker tested positive for cocaine in 2005.

But the balance of probabilities seems to be weighing heavily against Tevez's contract being torn up and dismissal. While Mancini is understood not to favour the idea, the Abu Dhabis are also sensitive to damaging his value yet more and also having the club being viewed by those within the game as a place where the regime is austere and unbending. The more likely course of action is that Tevez will be play no future role in Mancini's squads and will be sold at the highest price they can achieve in January. The club went to great lengths to help Corinthians buy Tevez in the summer, though did not receive the guarantees that the buying club could find the money.

The international break has come at a timely moment for City, who are handed two weeks' breathing space while Tevez is with the Argentina squad, who play Chile and Venezuela in World Cup qualifiers. The players had a day off yesterday while the club began their investigation.

Daniel Geey of Field Fisher Waterhouse said it would be implicit within Tevez's contract that he should play football when asked and a failure to play represented gross misconduct in law. City would have to make that decision within days or weeks, to comply with employment law. A complicating factor is that Tevez may claim the right of fair consideration for selection, and the failure to give him that could be a breach of contract on City's part. It may be difficult simply to exclude him from squads entirely.

Tevez's team-mates fell short of publicly questioning him as they left the stadium. "That's a decision each player makes – it was not to do with me, I was on the pitch playing," said compatriot Sergio Aguero. "Those things are between them, not with me. It is Roberto who is in charge, and he puts through his opinions and ideas, and obviously makes his decisions, and we just have to go with it." Of Tevez, Aguero said: "He is a great player, but obviously I am not inside his mind, to know his thoughts and opinions. I am not in his head but I think everything is OK."

Manchester City fans want club to 'get rid' of Carlos Tevez as soon as possible

      By Mark Ogden
      29 Sep 2011

Manchester City have been urged ‘get rid’ of Carlos Tevez at the first opportunity by supporters enraged by the former club captain’s refusal to face Bayer Munich as a substitute in Tuesday’s Champions League clash in Germany.

An online poll conducted on Wednesday by the Manchester Evening News asking whether Tevez should play for City again resulted in 90 per cent of respondents voting for the player to be cast into the wilderness at the Etihad Stadium.

And although one lone protestor greeted Tevez’s arrival at Manchester Airport at 2am on Wednesday morning, when City increased security amid fears of a supporter backlash, various fans websites have been flooded with calls for the former Manchester United player to be driven out of the club.

Andy Savage, editor of mcfc-forum.com, said: "I posted on online survey immediately after the game giving supporters three options to choose in terms of how they would deal with Tevez.

"The choices were sack him, let him rot or ‘other’ and, by Wednesday evening, the vast majority had voted for the club to let him rot.

"After what happened at Bayern Munich, the club should get rid of him as quickly as possible. All of the fans I have spoken to want Tevez out on the grounds of gross misconduct.

"If I had been Roberto Mancini in the Allianz Arena, I would have told the fourth official to raise his board with Tevez’s number on it when he substituted Samir Nasri.

"Had he done that, he would have hung Tevez out to dry in front of the watching world.

"If somebody is willing to pay £20-25m for him, then the club should take it because the effect Tevez is having risks becoming cancerous within the dressing room."

Kevin Parker, chairman of the Manchester City Supporters’ Club, said: "When I was speaking to people in the airport after the game, everybody wanted Tevez out of the club.

"They never want him to wear a City shirt again. His relationship with the fans is in tatters.

"I can’t see how this can be repaired. Nobody is going to believe his story that he didn’t refuse to come on.

"We just want to move on without Carlos Tevez. No single person is bigger than any football club and certainly not Carlos Tevez."

Well, the good news is, Man City are handling this affair in the worst possible way ...

They'll probably end up cancelling Tevez' contract, and getting sued by Joorabchian for years ...

Paris St Germain and Inter Milan to offer Tevez an escape route

      Published 23:03 01/10/11
      By Simon Mullock

Paris St Germain and Inter Milan are ready to offer Carlos Tevez an escape route out of Manchester City.

But the Blues will have to slash their £40million summer asking price if they are going to do business for a striker that boss Roberto Mancini has warned will never play for the club again.

Inter will offer £25m for the Argentine when the transfer window opens again in January, but payments will have to be staged. Inter are likely to demand an even bigger discount if Tevez does not see any first team action over the next three months.

Micah Richards, City’s homegrown defender, has told Tevez that he was wrong to go on strike in Munich.

The powerful defender is the first team-mate to publicly criticise Tevez.

Richards said: “Carlos’ reaction in Munich was wrong. It was something he shouldn’t have done.

“There was always going to be a bit of tension because Carlos is a top player and hasn’t been getting in the team. But there was no sign that he was going to do what he did.

“I like Carlos. He’s probably still the best player that I have played with and I’ll always be grateful he came to City and helped us achieve what we did last season.

“He’s been our best player for the last couple of years and won’t be happy the manager has been picking other strikers ahead of him.

“But we are a top team now. We can’t just be about one or two players because if you want to challenge for the big trophies it has to be about the strength of your squad.

“There’s a lesson for us to learn here. If we want to be a top team then as individuals we have to sacrifice ourselves. I went through it myself. I might not be a big name like Carlos Tevez but I am an England international and I thought I should be playing in every game.

“You do get emotional. Your pride does hurt. I found it hard when I wasn’t in the team and at times I did struggle to just keep my head down and say nothing.

“I’ve been rotating with Pablo Zabaleta. At left-back it’s been Kolarov and Clichy. It’s the same with the midfielders and the forwards.

“Aguero and Dzeko have been on fire this season and when Balotelli came on last week against Everton he scored an important goal.

“I thought Carlos was just waiting for his chance to show what he could do.

“You’re never happy if you aren’t playing, but we’ve got a big squad and we’ve all just got to use it.”

Tevez to learn Man City fate in next 48 hours

      Published 22:30 03/10/11
      By David McDonnell

Carlos Tevez was last night given the green light to return to Argentina.

The Manchester City striker held showdown talks with club officials yesterday, following his alleged refusal to come off the bench in the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich in Germany last week.

After being told he will learn his fate in the next 48 hours, and that the club had no objection to him leaving the country, Tevez was preparing to fly to his homeland with his wife and two daughters.

Tevez was grilled for an hour by City representatives in Manchester yesterday where he gave his account of what happened a week ago in the Allianz Arena.

It is understood Tevez claimed there was a misunderstanding with boss Roberto Mancini and that was the reason he failed to come on, rather than refusing to play.

City want the investigation finished by Thursday – seven days after Tevez was suspended for two weeks on full pay pending the outcome – in accordance with their original time frame.

All options, including the termination of Tevez’s contract if the player is found to be guilty of gross misconduct, remain open to City, with the club now keen to draw a line under the episode.

Tevez and his representative Kia Joorabchian did not know the location of the meeting until 90 minutes before it was due to start as officials were keen to ensure privacy.

Members of City’s coaching staff, who were on the bench in Munich, as well as several of Tevez’s team-mates have also been interviewed.

Mancini, who brought an official complaint against Tevez for his alleged refusal to play, was spoken to as part of the internal enquiry before he travelled home to Italy on Saturday following City’s 4-0 win at Blackburn.
