Oasis - How bad are their Lyrics?
      May 01, 2009 08:20:46 pm
Has anyone ever listened to this band; I mean really listened?

Now I don't hate (Qu)Oasis - quite the contrary: they were like a breath of fresh air 15 years ago. But......boy do their lyrics suck!

      Here's your starter for 10:

(it will help if you read these aloud to yourself as you would a kiddies nursery rhyme; otherwise you run the risk of not suffering the full atrocity of the lyrics)

I know a girl called Elsa
      She’s into Alka Seltzer
She sniffs it through a cane
      On a supersonic train
      She made me laugh
      I got her autograph

Rhyme writing the line or what?  :lmao:

      So what?

I don't care if their lyrics include the words banana's, trampoline and fish pond so long as it sounds good.

So, like me, you're admitting their lyrics suck ass?

      Trampoline......let me think.

      live for your toys
      even though they make noise
have you ever played with plasticine
      even tried a trampoline
      thank you for your smile
      you make it all worthwhile

      Oasis' lyrics are sublime.

For example - "slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannon ball."

      or

"Please don't put your life in the hand of a rock and roll band they'll throw it all away."

So what if the lyrics rhyme - how many songs don't?

Lennon and McCartney are considered the finest songwriters ever, here's some of their lyrics - "love love me do, you know I'll love you, I'll always be true, so please please please love me do." Number 1 on their hands.

I've seen interviews with Noel and Liam and they admit to writing the lyrics to supersonic( which you quoted) in like a few hours while they were waiting to record Definitely Maybe.

But the fact that they can write amazing lyrics for songs like champagne supernova, Rock n Roll Star, Wonderwall, I'm Outta Time etc (i could go on forever) proves that when they write lyrics that don't make sense, they don't do it because they don't know what words to put into the song but because it's just another way of making one of their songs sound great.

They know how to make a song sound great and whether the lyrics make sense or not is irrelevant. They don't try and kid you that those lyrics are genius because they often talk about how they just threw them together as quick as possible. (E.g Elsa was a dog in the recording studio that kept making awful smells while they were recording)

As DLS pointed out, the beatles have done this on numerous number ones but it doesn't make them any less brilliant songwriters.

Supersonic just happens to be my favourite oasis song btw. No-one will come close to oasis' songwriting for a while, I'm sure of that. Anyone going to see them in June?

Where exactly did i actually say their lyrics sucked?

I love the Oasis lyrics and they are one of my favourite bands.

Okay, I'll admit it. I was feeling a tad mischievous yesterday.  >:D

All in all, I've seen Oasis on 15 different occasions - starting in Slane, 1995 when they supported R.E.M and on June 20 this year, i'll be at that venue again making it 16 times in all. It don't take Sherlock to figure out that, only someone who has listened to the Quo(asis) would know their lyrics anyhow. Ironically - I guess i'm just too old to give unconditional love to or put my life in the hand of a rock and roll band... they'll throw it all away.  ;D

Oh, by the way, Noel must have been well chuffed for nearly finding a Rhyme for Elsa on Supersonic.
