Mourinho: Neymar's £199m fee "not expensive"

Jose Mourinho claims the £199m fee for Neymar is ‘not expensive’ - but the Manchester United boss fears it will leave the ‘crazy transfer market’ in a spin.

While acknowledging the commercial hit the French giants will gain, Mourinho is concerned it will drive transfer fees sky high for everyone else.

In Dublin last night, he said: “When we signed Paul Pogba, I said he was not expensive. Expensive are the ones that get to a certain level without a certain quality.

“I don’t think £200m for Neymar is expensive.

“Expensive is the fact there will now be more players at £100m, more players at £50m, more players at £60m - that’s the problem.

“Neymar is one of the best players in the world, so commercially that is very strong but the problem is not Neymar - the problem is the consequences.”

So we can confirm then that Mourinho is indeed a cheque book manager? or is he seriously deluded?

Given the chance by their owners all managers would be the same. Mourhino no different from anyone else, it's just because he's from United your having a pop  :D

Those that aren't check book managers languish in mid division at best as a rule. Is that what you want for Liverpool so you can just say Klopp isn't a cheque book manager??  Trust me given the chance/opportunity Klopp would quite rightly be no different that anyone else.

He was considered a cheque book manager at Chelsea, Madrid and Milan on these boards Keith.

Oh come on Keith, stop for a second and consider it, £200 million for ONE player, that is an eye watering amount of money and there is simply no way it can ever be justified, no one is worth that kind of money. Hell I'd say no player is worth more than a max of £50 million and the vast majority should be in the low teens. The transfer market has become completely insane now and something must be done, because ultimately who suffers, its you and me and every other fan who has to pay more and more and more to watch our teams, whilst these mercenary pr**k footballers and agents earn sickening amounts of money, £515,000 AFTER tax per week!!

Hello Daz long time no speak. :D Hope your well. Yes 100% agree with above post, he's just brought his cheque book with him.  ;D

Seriously though top class managers often get the funds they need providing owners have the passion to win things and not just want to make a profit. One thing United, Chelsea,City, Barc, Madrid, PSG and possibly one or two others have is their owners do have the passion as well as big pockets to support the manager. Sadly for Liverpool ( imho ) your owners don't have the passion that Klopp and the fans have. There lies Liverpools problem.

Once again in total agreement mate. It's becoming tottaly ridiculous now. How anyone can justifiably spend this kind of money on one player is obscene. £515k a week. It's very very sad and whether you play at United, Liverpool or anywhere else football players are greedy cu*ts, that includes every player in a United shirt. Players are milking the system and ultimately it's the fans that have to pay for it.  :f_steam:

OK but its not helped by managers like Maureen coming out and saying its fully justified, that just green flags it, its utterly irresponsible of him.
Seriously the sooner FIFA and/or UEFA impose wage and transfer caps as in US sports the better because it can't continue like this.

It didn't help Mourhino saying it's justified. However, he does agree it's getting silly which we all know it is. Problem is I can only see it getting worse because of the Neymar sale. If a cap was implemented it would certainly make for a more exciting league and not just the top 6 that we all know battle it most years.

Some would say it's a great PR move by the Qatari's, buy him for PSG and then have him advertise the F**k out of the 2022 world cup which will be held in Qatar.

Quite sure Neymar could be used to advertise World Cup even if he stayed at Barcelona.

It'll be all down to sponsorship, Barca now having a new sponsor might see it as a distraction etc, but with PSG it'll probably be in the contractual obligations.

Or then again could be total bollocks and he just wants to be a top dog at a club, which he'll never be at Barca as long as Messi is there.

Second paragraph. I hardly even think of Neymar in the top 5 while he is at Barca. He could be worse at PSG thoough. Barca strikers seem to net a lot of goals since it's put on a plate.

Fair play to Juan Mata for trying to get a central charitable fund underway where at least 1% of football earnings will go to good causes.

It's not much in the grander scheme of things but it's a step in the right direction.

Not watching to be honest but that doesn't surprise me. You could tell by who they targeted it would get worse for them this season.

Dire, dire football to be 'enjoyed' by all at the Old Toilet, wouldn't surprise me if Mourinho was sacked by the end of this year. If anyone has been found out it's him and football has passed him by in my opinion.
