      Will Michael Shields be Pardoned?
      Jun 03, 2009 05:32:22 pm
      Shields decision 'within a month'
A decision will be made this month on whether to grant jailed Liverpool fan Michael Shields an official pardon, Gordon Brown has indicated.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw can issue the pardon but has asked police to examine the Bulgarian conviction.

Mr Brown told the Commons Mr Straw would make the "best and fairest decision" he could.

Shields, 22, was transferred to the UK in 2006 after his 15-year sentence for attempted murder was reduced on appeal.

He was convicted of the attempted murder of a barman at the Black Sea resort of Varna in 2005 but has always maintained his innocence.

The High Court last year ruled that it was open to Mr Straw to entertain a request to exercise the royal prerogative to grant Shields a free pardon.

During Commons question time, Mr Brown said: "I understand the concerns about delay of the Shields family, they have waited a long time, he has got a large number of supporters.

"We are determined to make - that is the Justice Secretary who makes the decision - the best and fairest decision he can. But he can do so only after, in the public interest, assessing all the material that is available. And he expects to write to Mr Shields' lawyers later this month."

      Confession retracted

Barman Martin Georgiev had a rock dropped on his head in May 2005.

Shields had been watching Liverpool's Champions League final win against AC Milan on television at the resort, along with other supporters.

He was found guilty of attempted murder in a trial in Bulgaria after the incident but has always maintained his innocence.

At one point another Liverpool fan, who was staying in the same hotel, signed a confession admitting he carried out the attack, but he later retracted it.

Shields, who was jailed in Bulgaria in July 2005, is currently serving his sentence at Thorn Cross Young Offenders' Institute in Warrington.

What material does Straw need to "assess". Everybody knows Michael is innocent, alls Straw is doing is stalling right now.

When I saw him today in PMQ's sitting their smuggly I nearly threw my cup at the telly. bas**rds all of them.If we marched 50,000 strong to Downing street we would get their attention.

Whatever happened to that Graham Sankey lad?

      Oh - last April

      Quote
GRAHAM Sankey was today jailed for a foul-mouthed racist outburst.

Sankey, 22, who once confessed to the attack for which Michael Shields was jailed, was sentenced to five months at Liverpool crown court.

The Anfield electrician was jailed after the court heard he subjected a Liverpool doorman to a tirade of racist swearing, then told police it was a "white man’s country."

Sankey, of Charnley Drive, Wavertree, retracted his confession to the Michael Shields incident in Bulgaria and now denies he was involved.

The court today heard how the 22-year-old was drinking at the city centre Walkabout Bar, in Concert Square, on August 23 last year.

He launched his tirade when doorman Solomon Fadipe asked him to leave because the bar was closing.

Ben Morris, defending, conceded his client told police England was a "white man’s country and he shouldn’t be arrested for abusing a black man."

He said Sankey was genuinely ashamed and remorseful.

The 22-year-old admitted causing racially aggravated harassment, fear or violence when he changed his plea at the last minute at a hearing in March.

Jailing Sankey, who was wearing a grey tracksuit top and jeans, Judge Henry Globe, QC, said his remarks left the victim feeling "useless and as if he was a second class citizen."

He said: "Such behaviour in today's society is completely unacceptable and is a serious offence.

"The remarks you made were grossly offensive and I am satisfied they were intended at that time to have racial views of an extreme kind."

He warned Sankey, who has four previous convictions for public order and failing to surrender to bail, that if he commited another violent offence he risked being jailed for "a very long time."

Why can't Jack Straw release this innocent man??

So come on Jack pull out all the stops!!!   Afterall you are very irresponsible when  it comes to releasing prisoners who have convicted horrendous crimes and who are a danger to the Public.

Surely it is time for Jack to expedite the release of Michael instead of worrying about his Council Tax Bill, oh and his own personal expenses!!

PS. Why didn't Jack go to prison for not paying his Council Tax?

WTF is wrong with these people even the Bulgarians are saying they got it wrong.Straw is a liar he said end of June its July he's a liar like all the other self serving politicians. Is it any wonder why we (born in Liverpool) have such a distrust of authority. Just look at Hilsborough and now Michael Shields its always cover their arse time yet if we cross the line its bang away you go. The whole lot of them make me puke we would be far better of without them.Feel very sorry for Michael and his family.
