Last Saturday I went to the bar to have a drink with a friend from São Paulo who was in Rio for the famous Rock In Rio festival, particularly the heavy metal night, as he's a huge fan of that style. The lineup contained bands like Sepultura, Motorhead, Coheed and Cambria, Slipknot and Metallica.

I have never been much of a heavy metal fan but always loved Metallica - they were one of the reasons why I started to listen to rock, so there was also a nostalgic feeling about it.

At some point, I mentioned my love for Metallica and Motorhead and said I wished I could see them, but tickets were sold out too fast. Thanks to a lucky coincidence, a friend of my friend had a spare ticket and was looking to sell for less than she paid for it.

So, after so many wasted opportunities in the past, I finally saw Metallica live. And they were f***in awesome.

      Motorhead were also amazing.

How do you call, in English, the punk 'pogo'? I mean, the circles in rock concerts where people push each other and stuff like that?

I've got some marks on my body that tells how insane Ace of Spades was. There was such a giant circle during that song, I ran right into the middle of it, someone punched me on my chest, I could hardly breathe, haha, but kept jumping till the end. My favorite Motorhead song, I went nuts. It's such an idiotic thing to do, I know, but I love it. :D

My right leg also hurts immensely... during Enter Sandman, someone kicked me, I hardly felt anything then, but now I do.

      Who cares. It was brilliant.

       :666:

As for the other bands, my impressions were...

Slipknot: f***in annoying. Everybody loved their concert, and I'll have to admit they are great on the stage, great energy, but I really dislike their songs.

Coheed and Cambria were awful, didn't know them before last night but they had everything I hate in heavy metal.

It makes me laugh that someone might actually like Angra, they're so pathetic.

Sepultura were okay, when they played their classic songs they were brilliant, but it was actually a joint concert with some French percussion band, and their setlist had mostly new songs or even covers. But it was worth for Roots Bloody Roots alone.

      It's a 'circle pit', diego.

I've seen Metallica twice, 2 shows spaced about 9 years apart. I'm not a huge fan though. In fact when I saw them for the second time at Download festival, I was on the barrier in prime position but left after 4 or 5 songs to go for a burger, ;D.

Used to love Sepultura back in the day but not so much now. No interest in Coheed or Slipknot.

Motörhead are legends! Lemmy was born in Stoke-on-Trent (technically the borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme) where I live and there's talk of erecting a statue in his honour. Must admit though, I'm getting a bit tired of hearing Ace of Spades, they've released about 20 studio albums and all you ever hear is that one bloody track!

      Glad you enjoyed it, mate!

      You lucky b***ard Diego.
If you jump off the stage into the crowd you're probably diving into the mosh pit.

      'circle pit'
      That doesn't look right.

Always called it a mosh pit.

Metallica were one of the first bands that structured my musical taste.
Up there with Faith No More.

Did they play Whiskey In The Jar?

No they're two different things, mate. If it's just a kind of free-for-all then yeah, that is a mosh pit, it's a generic term.
Diego mentioned the circles, this is called a circle pit.
If the crowd is divided into two parts and then clash together, that is called a wall of death  :D  :action-smiley-035:

      Urban Dictionary agrees with you.

      1.    circle pit   85 up, 14 down
Can be noun or verb. A form of violent, aggressive dancing or "slamming" during punk shows that stays within the confines of an open, circular area in the middle of the floor. Any of the following may occur within the circle pit including:
      1. dancing or skanking that looks like running in a counter clock wise fashion
      2. random thrashing motion with elbows swinging and legs kicking out in a "running" man style fashion
      3. usually occurring at the front of the floor is the pogo which is hopping up and down and bumping into other participants
      4. the circle pit can also differ in different types of shows such as at a hardcore show (windmilling, picking up change, kickboxing) or a metal show (the largest participants running around and seeing how can push whom the hardest) or a ska show(skanking).

Oh that's it then, a circle pit. Forgot to post a video, and now I'm at work again :D There was also a wall of death in Rock In Rio, some heavy metal band playing in the smaller stage told their fans to do so, haha, but I never saw it, probably was having lunch then... only heard of it the day after.

      You lucky b***ard Diego.

I don't listen much of Metallica these days either, but they were one of those bands that converted me into a rock fan when I was younger, so to finally see them live was really amazing.

Unfortunately they didn't play Whiskey In The Jar, I'd have gone total mad if they did

      Here's their setlist:

      Creeping death
      For whom the bell tolls
      Fuel
      Ride the lightning
      Fade to black
      Cyanide
      All nightmare long
      Sad but true
      Welcome home (sanitarium)
      Orion
      One
      Master of puppets
      Blackened
      Nothing else matters
      Enter Sandman
