Why do you like that song?
      Jun 28, 2009 07:08:21 pm
You know how you sometimes like a song because it just sounds like a good track or sometimes you like it because of its meaning? So, why is that you like that particular song? Abit of an emotional topic i suppose if you choose it to be.

One song i love is Heartless by Kanye. Not only do i love his music but he tries to be number one by singing a song, not just muttering words. In this song he just sings about love, nothing else. It shows his feelings.

      Bloc Party - Plans

Quote from Bloc Party - Plans
      Wake up dreamer
      It's happening without you
Cut your hair and shave your beard
      You squandered your chances
I'll give you a thousand pounds
To show me how you do it
      Stop being so laissez-faire
We're all scared of the future

Been training vipers to come for you
In your dreams to release you
Been training vipers to come for you
      In your sleep
And the ravens are leaving the tower
And the ravens are leaving the tower
      Make your peace

I've got a taste for blood
Leave the weak, leave the young
I've got a taste for blood
      I'm walking out without you
You will kill or be killed
      It's about progress
I've got a taste for blood

      Wake up sleepyhead
      It's happening without you
      Such a nice guy
      You tell me everything twice
      Whipcrack speed jump
      We will run backwards
      Stop being so laissez-faire
We're all scared of the future

We make plans for big times
      Get bogged down, distracted
We make plans for good times
      All neon, all surface
So kiss me before it all gets complicated
I've got a taste for blood

Have a look through the lyrics, it's pretty self explanatory and it makes an awful lot of sense.

A song about the fact that you've got to go out and do things to achieve. Most things won't come to you.

'We're all scared of the future' but we've got to be prepared for these 'big times' that are ahead of us.

I feel this song is just brilliant. Fantastic guitar solo at the end too. It's a slow song, but I just feel there's so much emotion in it.

Here's a link if you want to listen to it:

      Smithers-Jones by the Jam.

In the last few weeks has become one of my favourite songs in the world for what it says to me. It says everything I want to, people pretending to be something they're not but still being saw right through.

Brand New Start by Paul Weller.

Hadn't heard it until the other week when he done that thing for BBC4. It fits in with the changes I've had to make in my life recently. Quite inspirational.

      Levellers

      Another Man's Cause

The lyrics are pretty self explanatory again and touching and echo the plight of the familys of soldiers who go to war to fight for our country.

      The Levellers Another mans cause

Gunshots shatter in the peace of night
      Just another fire fight
For the people of this little town.
      But for the dying soldier
Well, he's feeling ten years older
As he's lying face down on the ground.
All the words that are in his head
Are all the words his mother said
As she would put him to bed back home.

Your daddy, well he died in the Falklands
      Fighting for another man's cause
And your brother, he was killed in the Last War
And your mother, well she's lying home alone.

Every day she sees your face
On the picture on the fireplace
With your brother as he was leaving school.
Then a day came five years ago
You said, "Mother, I need to know"
And you spoke the words your brother spoke before.
"I seen the things my Daddy's done
And I've seen the medals that he's won
And I know this is what he would have wanted... for me."

But, your daddy well he died in the Falklands
      Fighting for another man's cause
And your brother, he was killed in the Last War
And your mother, well she's lying home alone.

Now she wonders at it all,
Just in whose name do these brave young heroes fall?
And how many more are going to answer that call?
They're gonna fight and die in another country's war,
They're gonna die for a religion they don't believe in at all,
They're gonna die in a place they should never've been at all,
      Oh, never've been at all.

'Cause, your daddy well he died in the Falklands
      Fighting for another man's cause
And your brother, he was killed in the Last War
And your mother, well she's lying home alone.

And your daddy, well he died in the Falklands

Walk Like A Man - Four Seasons

Listening to it again tonight and it's spot on. If a girl is treating you like sh*te, then walk away from her like a man because as the song says "no woman's worth crawling on the earth"

For me the greatest songs must have great lyrics. I have way too many songs that mean something to me and a sh*t load that actually reduce me to tears. This one doesn't do that but has a great message .....

      Everlast - 'What it's like'

We've all seen the man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dreadlocked and full of mange
He ask the man for what he could spare with shame in his eyes
Get a job you f***in' slob's all he replied

God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
Then you really might know what it's like

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom who said he was in love
He said don't worry about a thing baby doll I'm the man you've been dreamin' of
But three months later he said he won't date her or return her call
And she sweared god damn if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walkin' through the doors
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner, and they call her a whore

God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
Then you really might know what it's like
I've seen a rich man beg
I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
      I've seen a loser win
      And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad
And the down side of up
      And everything between
      I licked the silver spoon
      Drank from the golden cup
      Smoked the finest green
I stroked the baddest dimes at least a couple of times
      Before I broke their heart
      You know where it ends
Yo, it usually depends on where you start

I knew this kid named Max
He used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late at night
      Liked to get sh*t faced
      And keep pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight
      Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45
      Talked some sh*t
      And wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of his pain
You know it crumbles that way
At least that's what they say when you play the game

God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like
      To have to lose...

Here enjoy:..... Everlast - What its Like

Switchfoot - Dare you to move
I've loved this song for years now, to me it's timeless and one of those songs that makes you think.

      Lyrics:

      Welcome to the planet
      Welcome to existence
      Everyone's here
      Everyone's here
      Everybody's watching you now
      Everybody waits for you now
      What happens next?
      What happens next?

      I dare you to move
      I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
      I dare you to move
      I dare you to move
      Like today never happened
      Today never happened before

      Welcome to the fallout
      Welcome to resistance
      The tension is here
      The tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be

      I dare you to move
      I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
      I dare you to move
      I dare you to move
      Like today never happened
      Today never happened

Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
      Where you gonna go?
      Where you gonna go?
      Salvation is here

      I dare you to move
      I dare you to move
I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor
      I dare you to move
      I dare you to move
      Like today never happened
      Today never happened
      Today never happened
      Today never happened before

My choice has to be "In Loving Memory" by "Alter Bridge". Kind of reminds me of those I've lost in my life

In Loving Memory - Alter Bridge Music Video

      Quote
      Thanks for all you've done
I've missed you for so long
      I can't believe you're gone
      You still live in me
I feel you in the wind
      You guide me constantly

I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
      You were always waiting
And now come home and I miss your face so
      Smiling down on me
I close my eyes to see

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

I carry the things that remind me of you
      In loving memory of
The one that was so true
Your were as kind as you could be
      And even though you're gone
You still mean the world to me

I've never knew what it was to be alone, no
Cause you were always there for me
      You were always waiting
But now I come home and it's not the same, no
      It feels empty and alone
      I can't believe you're gone

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

I'm glad he set you free from sorrow
I'll still love you more tomorrow
And you will be here with me still

And what you did you did with feeling
And You always found the meaning
      And you always will
      And you always will
      And you always will

      Ooo's

And I know, you're a part of me
And it's your song that sets me free
I sing it while I feel I can't hold on
I sing tonight cause it comforts me

One of Foxton's better songs but i always took it to be a message about being made redundant/feeling worthless in Thatcher's Britain.

      English Rose - The Jam

A bit of a personal reason for liking this particular Jam song. Me mam's name is Rose and for that I always think the lyrics are for her. And it's the way I feel for me mam, "no matter where I roam I will return to my English Rose". It says to me, that wherever in this world I go, I'll always return to me mam.

Was written about Richard Ashcrofts Grandma dying from cancer and I totally identify with it from when I lost my Grandma to the same very thing. Gets me quite emotional to be honest just listening to it.

Five For Fighting - Superman (it's Not Easy)

A song that i listened to often when i decided not to 'drink' anymore.....6 1/2 years sober now.

      I can’t stand to fly
      I’m not that naive
      I’m just out to find
      The better part of me
      I’m more than a bird...I’m more than a plane
More than some pretty face beside a train
It’s not easy to be me

I Wish that I could cry
      Fall upon my knees
      Find a way to lie
About a home I’ll never see

It may sound absurd...but don’t be naive
Even Heroes have the right to bleed
      I may be disturbed...but won’t you concede
Even Heroes have the right to dream
It’s not easy to be me

Up, up and away...away from me
It’s all right...You can all sleep sound tonight
      I’m not crazy...or anything…

      I can’t stand to fly
      I’m not that naive
      Men weren’t meant to ride
      With clouds between their knees

I’m only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me

It’s not easy to be me.

I pretty much prefer those really easy going songs and not those that will go 'bang bang' all day, they annoy me and my ears anyway.

My favourite song is Jason Mraz - I'm Yours, it just captures the essence of easy-goingness, has that relaxed feeling and sensation all over that song.

Other than that song, I'll listen to any sung by Taylor Swift.

The Coronas - San Diego Song

We sleep all day and we drink all night
We are not wasting our time
We refuse to hide, we're going out tonight

Single in San Diego - 6 weeks just wasting time.
We moved in with the girls and left it all behind
So what's wrong with this life you say it's not enough,
What does it feel like? You think you're better than us.

'Cause we sleep all day and we drink all night
We are not wasting our time,
We refuse to hide, we're going out tonight

Lonely in San Diego, just don't let it get you down
'Cause I've been there before but I know better now.
Just one last storm before the calm while we're still young
Yeah we know yeah we understand what needs to be done.

'Cause we sleep all day and we drink all night
We are not wasting our time,
We refuse to hide, we're going out tonight

Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues live at San Quentin. The guitar in it is vicious and the lyrics and tempo are quality. JC is the best he ever sounded IMO. Go on, watch this - it's less than two minutes long!

Green day - wake me up when September ends

Song about Billie Joe's (lead singer) father dying of esophageal cancer when he was only ten years old, I seen him break down on stage when I seen them live at Milton Keynes, he was explaining the true meaning of the song at the time, had to admire the lad for that. Quality song also

The Verve - Drugs don't work

Was written about Richard Ashcrofts Grandma dying from cancer and I totally identify with it from when I lost my Grandma to the same very thing. Gets me quite emotional to be honest just listening to it.

The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work

I can relate to that song too mate, my Grandma and Mum were both victims of cancer, sadly my Grandma passed away but my Mum has survived.

Very sad song, but I guess ultimately 'I know I'll see your face again'. Thankfully for me I'll see my Mums face in this life still.

      "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John.

This is just one of the thousands of songs I've took to my heart. This particular one was covered by the Foo Fighters, and led me to the original. Sticks out of late though, some relevance in the lyrics.

My Missus is a dancer, and has been for some years. And those of you who have met her will know already, she's also tiny. :D There's also the reference to marrying a music man, for my love of guitars and all music.

      I'm a soppy get aren't I?

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

Jesus freaks out in the street
      Handing tickets out for God
      Turning back she just laughs
The boulevard is not that bad

Piano man he makes his stand
      In the auditorium
Looking on she sings the songs
The words she knows the tune she hums

But oh how it feels so real
Lying here with no one near
Only you and you can hear me
      When I say softly slowly

      Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band
Pretty eyed, pirate smile, you'll marry a music man
Ballerina, you must have seen her dancing in the sand
And now she's in me, always with me, tiny dancer in my hand

How to save a life - The Fray
Sounds good and has a great meaning!

Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
And you begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
      Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
      Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
      Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
      He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
      Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

      Disarm - Smashing Pumpkins

One of the first songs I remember listening to as a child in my Dad's car with real deeping meaning to it, and really enjoying it.

Here's a Billy Corgan (lead singer of SP) quote about the song:

"The reason I wrote Disarm was because, I didn't have the guts to kill my parents, so I thought I'd get back at them through song. And rather then have an angry, angry, angry violent song I'd thought I'd write something beautiful and make them realize what tender feelings I have in my heart, and make them feel really bad for treating me like sh*t. Disarm's hard to talk about because people will say to me 'I listen to that song and I can't figure out what it's about.' It's like about things that are beyond words. I think you can conjure up images and put together phrases, but it's a feeling beyond words and for me it has a lot to do with like a sense of loss. Being an adult and looking back and romanticizing a childhood that never happened or went by so quickly in a naive state that you miss it."

      Disarm you with a smile
And cut you like you want me to
      Cut that little child
Inside of me and such a part of you
      Ooh, the years burn

I used to be a little boy
      So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my choice
What's a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
      My love
I send this smile over to you

      Disarm you with a smile
And leave you like they left me here
      To wither in denial
The bitterness of one who's left alone
      Ooh, the years burn
Ooh, the years burn, burn, burn

I used to be a little boy
      So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my voice
What's a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
      My love
I send this smile over to you

The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you

Editors - The Boxer [ new cd Editors HD]

      Love this song.

Just trying to work out what the song is about though.

Don't know whether it's supposed to be taken in a literal sense or a metaphorical one?

      Lyrics:

A bruised full moon play fights with the stars,
This place is our prison, it’s cells are the bars.
So take me to town, I want to dance with the city,
Show me something ugly and show me something pretty.

Damn this place, makes a boy out of me,
The ring meets my face by the count of three

An unwanted son pulls rank in the sky,
The boxer isn’t finished, he’s not ready to die,
I’m attracted to the light, I am attracted to the heat
It’s a violent night, there are boxers in the streets.

Damn this place, makes a boy out of me,
The rain meets my face by the count of three.
Damn this place, makes a boy out of me,
The rain meets my face, I’m a fallen oak tree

      Dazed in the final count,
      Dazed in the final count,
      Dazed in the final count,
      Dazed in the final count.
