The Force Awakens was just a subtle rewrite of the original Star Wars movie!!

Indeed, but it gave ground to a new set of character arcs and then TLJ just shat on all that could have been good about the new films.

      Gotcha.

The lads seem pretty enthused - the optimism of youth ;) - and understand the limitations.

Will post collective thoughts after Saturday.

Pretty sure the vast hardcore Star Wars fans didn't like it because of the risks taken, where as the majority of casual star wars fans loved it. I'm a heavy reader of the expanded universe so I consider myself the a Star Wars nerd! :D The more I think about it, the more I disliked TLJ, and even struggling to go back and re-watch the original trilogy because of TLJ!!

Is this like the Star Wars version of casually putting down OOT fans? :D

I grew up reading the expanded universe. I was teased and bullied to the point of being beaten in school because I was the "Star Wars" kid. So I dunno, I would consider myself somewhat a serious fan, if we're gonna put labels on it. Not that I believe that is necessary. If you like Star Wars, you're a fan and every opinion is valid, "casual" or "hardcore".

I look forward to seeing the thoughts of any of those that liked it like me, and to see if they got what I got out of it - Star Wars finally grew up.

Not to say I don't mind the differing opinions, which is inevitable with Star Wars. Just hope those thinking about seeing it give it a shot still, and don't let this stuff derail you, as I think there is a fair amount to like in it myself.

As a Star Wars fan, i would say TLJ ruined the good work that went into TFA. Which is sad.

I liked TFA, but if you're saying this ruined "good work" put into that then you might as well just ask for a beat for beat remake of Empire (and you could argue TLJ had some similar tropes, but it certainly branched off a lot more into new territory finally I feel).

I'm an old school Star Wars fan, or just old.

For me ESB will always be the greatest of the films.

But I also enjoyed Rogue One for the different take/viewpoint,
along with the dramatic ending and kick-ass Vader sequence.

For me TFA was a great bridge between old and new fans/stories.
Yes there are some scenes that are identical to New Hope but it
was a great reintroduction to what the original series felt like and
      it introduced some great story-lines/arcs.

I suppose the frustration for some fans with TLJ is it just leaves
some of the lines that we were introduced to in TFA alone completely
while it goes off and does something else. And to me that's okay,
because we can do that later, right?

I both loved and hated TLJ. Some of the cinematography and storytelling
is majestic, and it's worth seeing for Mark Hammill's Skywalker. Masterclass.

There were parts that kept shunting me out of the experience though.
Like the additions/changes Lucas made to the original.
In TLJ it was slightly different. It wasn't just random noises,
but it was Marvel like in it's constant need to break serious tone with humour.
Didn't always work for me and felt like this is the part where Star Wars becomes my kid's.

      I'm okay with that. I'll always have 4 & 5.

All that said. It's a really enjoyable movie, and visually it's stunning.

Think you nailed it mate, ESB & R1 are the stand outs of the story but the Last Jedi should & could have opened up more with a darker twist.

I just can't get over the plot though... ;D

Just give the franchise to Christopher Nolan ;D

There are massive subplots that there are absolutely no need for,
and feel way too much like the prequels.

      :D

Touching on your note on the humour shunting you out of it, interestingly enough I thought that was great and pulled me in. Especially after Lucas's cringeworthy efforts at humour at times, particularly in the prequels, the comedic timing was incredible. And I actually found myself immediately having fond flashbacks to Yoda training Luke in ESB with the funny scenes between Rey and him, felt like his journey had come full circle (and hence my note that some could argue TLJ had some very similar beats to ESB).

And man, Porgs. I want one. I won't try and BBQ it, promise :D

One thing is for sure - there will be no other franchise that is ever as divisive as the Star Wars one, and I think that speaks to it's popularity for sure but also simply just how many people it touches. Like I think TLJ has an audience rating of 56% on RT? Which some see as sh*t, but you think just how F***ing many people have seen it already, there is just a shitload that love it and a shitload that hate it. My Facebook feed of those who've seen it has probably a roughly 60-40 split between LOVE IT/POSSIBLY MY FAVORITE OF THE FILMS to F**k OFF AND DIE STAR WARS YOU'VE RUINED MY LIFE RIAN JOHNSON.

F**k OFF AND DIE STAR WARS YOU'VE RUINED MY LIFE RIAN JOHNSON.

You know a lot of angry white men.

And yes the porg scene was great.
The humour worked in that the timing was perfect it was just, for me,
it smacked of Guardians of the Galaxy. (Not the only part either)
Plus I agree with the ESB comparison and for that I expected this to embrace a darker tone.
Constantly cutting that tone with humour annoyed me a bit, but the kids loved all those parts.

Anyway the kid's Top are like this:

      7
      5
      4
      6
      TLJ

Although I've not shown him Rogue One yet and he's a big Vader fan, so that will change things.
Also he's never watched the prequels. (Cause you've got to experience the Vader reveal)

Pretty much nail on head for me,also agree regarding your comment on the subplots & marvelesque humour.
The cinamatography was also breathtaking as you say,and some of the scenes did have me on the edge of my seat.
I went with my 15 year old nephew who is only 4 years older than what I was when I seen the original SW at the pics and like me at the time had a total blast with it.
As a side note for us old sods & Star Wars fans there is a documentary this Thursday 21st Dec on BBC 4 at 10pm thereafter it will be on the BBC iplayer
      The Galaxy Britain Built.

I'm sure George Lucas has a script tucked away in a vault deep down in Colorado about Anakain SkyWalker having a secret heir after having an affair with Padme Amidala's handmaiden Sabe Maberrie in some Naboo field ;D

In a twist we see Lord Vader again ;D

      Saw TLJ Sunday evening.

I’ve given it a couple days and have settled on pure and unadulterated hatred for this movie.

Grew up with Star Wars, hated the prequel, loved TFA and didn’t like Rogue One (other than the Vader scene at the end) and I can’t get over how much I dislike TLJ. Won’t bore anyone with the details as to why other than to say this movie felt like an assignment someone had that they waited till the last minute to finish and then they tried to get cute in order to show how clever they are.

I think I like the prequels more than this movie and that’s a damning indictment.

At least I have Infinity War to look forward to next year.

Of course, ghost Obi Wan saying "Use the force, Luke." and him suddenly being able to hit the thermal exhaust in ANH makes perfect logical sense though.

Trying to make logical sense out of Star Wars is an interesting tactic :D

      Pretty much agree.

Just got back from it now and me and the missus both left disappointed.

She thought it was rubbish. I thought it was just average.

Enjoyed Rogue One much more this time last year.

Watched Oasis Supersonic on BBC 2 tonight. Same producers as Senna and Amy.

Great film, loved every second of it, fantastic viewing for Oasis fans both casual and hardcore. Hedonistic it may have been but true and honest as anything.
