      England to win 2-0

Cardiff - England win (spinners pitch apparently)
Lords - draw (tends to be a batting pitch and we never play well there)
Edgbaston - England win (love watching us play there)
Headingly - draw (due to weather, it's a ground being done up and the drainage system isn't working)
Oval - draw (we'll just play it out for the draw knowing we've already regained the Ashes)

      I knew you'd come round, 7-KK-7 :)

We're going to win this, i feel. North hit runs in time, no Harmison v Hughes build up, Johnson on fire with everything...doesnt look good for the Poms.

      I think we'll win 3-1.

Leading wicket taker to be Johnson.
      Leading run scorer...Katich.

Team news: England going with two spinners, Australia going with spinner Nathan Hauritz and Ben Hilfenhaus - Stuart Clark 12th man.

England captain Andrew Strauss has won the toss and England are going to have a bat. "It looks like a good wicket," says Andrew, "we would have had a bat as well," says opposite number Ricky Ponting.

      Bring it on!!

Are the selectors nuts? Why the hell would you leave Stuart Clark out.

      22/1. Not the worst start.

First day of the last Ashes in England in 2005, 17 wickets went. 10 of the Aussies (all out for 190) then 7 of ours (we ended up 155 after the first innings).

Great catch by Hussey, although still a relatively loose shot by Ali Cook.

They seem to be getting into Ravi, especially that Siddle bloke.

      Unintended.

Couple of good shots from Ravi, hopefully he's settled down now. That drive through the covers was fantastic.

Apparently not, he's back in the pavilion as well now.

Colly and KP in. England 97-3. Neither looking anywhere near their best.

Hmm. Not sure what to make of this so far.

Hopefully Pietersen will get his eye in soon.

Colly and KP have steadied the ship. Let's hope they keep it up.

      Currently 147-3.

KP went on a shocker to bloody Nathan Hauritz. Better have sorted his foot work for the rest of the Ashes!

      Stumps, Day 1

      ENG 336-7

A reasonable performance hopefully we can get the last 3 wickets early and put in a good batting performance.

My take on day 1 is that it's good to see so many England batsmen who look like they have some form, although it was disappointing that none of them manged to go to make 100+

Strauss hit 30 before failing to get out of the way of a bouncer
Cook was the only one who didn't really do it, playing at a wide one and going down to a good catch
Bopara looked like he was playing well before being done by a good slow ball
Pietersen hit 69 before giving his wicket away - he won't do that again this series
Collingwood hit 60+ before being caught behind to a good ball
Prior hit a quick-fire 50+ before succumbing to a good inswinger
Flintoff looked like he was enjoying himself before playing on a poor delivery well outside off-stump
Anderson and Broad look ok from the few deliveries faced

      Aussie bowlers
Johnson looked ok with some good and some average balls
Hilfenhaus looked dangerous every time he was thrown the ball
Siddle did ok but was punished for bowling too many wide on the off-side - lucky to get Flintoff, good ball to get Prior
Hauritz looked very ordinary, no threat there  - Pietersen gave him a boost by giving away his prize wicket
Clarke and Katich - part timers who were just using up overs

Overall, that pitch should produce a result and both teams will think they are still in it.  If England can get up to 400+ the Aussies will be under pressure on a wicket that looks like it will give something to Swann and Panesar.  If we get nice cloudy conditions tomorrow I fancy Anderson to take a few wickets with the swinging ball.

A good first day to kick off the series; runs, wickets, and some very fine play from both sides makes for a great Ashes summer.

Hugely disappointed nobody went on from their start and made a big score. Pietersen, Strauss, Bopara, Collingwood, Flintoff and Prior all got starts but failed to kick on.
