      Chris Mavinga signs for Liverpool

Well what do you know, Liverpool has beaten Arsenal to the signing of a French youngster. Now that's something which you don't see every day.

The 18 year old defender (can play at full back and centre back) has signed from Paris Saint Germain for an undisclosed fee. As ever, he's being portrayed as one of those brightest ever prospect types (we'll soon see).

Considering that he's just turned 18 years old, I imagine he'll be going straight to Melwood. But I wonder if he will be fast tracked to the first team in similar fashion to Ngog. Hope we get an early glimpse of him in pre-season

Does anyone know anything about this lad?

Not seen this anywhere else ie. Sky Sports or the official site. Might be an indication that either Kelly or San Jose will be making the step up.

Never heard of this lad. Also not sure if this source is reliable enough, but for now I'll think that this deal is nearly sealed up. There should be an announcement in a couple of days.

Kelly making the step up with that number 4 shirt maybe.

RAFA: SHOW ME WHAT YOU CAN DO
      James Carroll 07 July 2009

Rafa Benitez today challenged his young stars to use Liverpool's pre-season preparations as the ideal opportunity to impress ahead of the new campaign.
Spaniard's Daniel Pacheco, Mikel San Jose, Daniel Ayala, Hungarian duo Krisztian Nemeth and Peter Gulacsi, and local defender Martin Kelly trained alongside some of Anfield's senior players as the Reds returned to Melwood on Monday.

Benitez is urging the youngsters to make the most of their chance and stake a claim for first-team involvement in 2009-10.

"We have already had conversations with the likes of Pacheco, Ayala and San Jose and we have told them that it depends on them," said the Liverpool boss.

"They are now training with the first team squad and this is their chance to show what they can do ahead of the new season."

Liverpool will play their first pre-season friendly of the summer against St Gallen in Switzerland on July 15.

Taken off the official site, the youngsters are being given the chance to prove themselves and get their chance in the 1st Team.

The report on Chris Mavinga was actually from France Football, and is now being reported by Sky Sports.

      Quote
As they did last summer with the shock signing of David Ngog from Paris Saint Germain, Liverpool have returned to the Parisian giants for another French starlet, defender Chris Mavinga.

The 18-year-old, who has played for France at Under-18 level, has signed a three-year deal at the Merseyside giants, according to France Football.

Mavinga turned 18 on May 26; he has not made a first-team appearance for PSG but is highly-rated and can play at full back or as a central defender.

In April Arsenal were linked with a move for Mavinga with the Gunners France-based scout Gilles Grimandi having watched him play in a PSG reserve game.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooo that's the last thing we need, Wasn't Cheyrou and Biscan the next Zidane?

Let him be his own player and we'll judge him on his ability and not the ability of one of the greatest French footballers to grace the game.

I don't know how a centre back/full back can be a 'Zidane' but okay.

Hope this guy is decent, I know that their central defender Sakho is highly rated for a young player but I've never heard of this chap.

He's French. And it was a toss up between Zidane, Platini or Le Bouef.  :f_tongueincheek:

      So it's Zidane. Settled.

If we do sign him his song from The Kop should definitely be something to the tune of Corrina Corrina by Bob Dylan!

Wasn't PSG where we got Ngog from an all? Maybe we're starting to get some sort of relationship with them where we can pinch their promising prospects.

      Reds Land French Starlet

      http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool-fc-news/2009/07/08/reds-land-french-starlet-100252-24104512/

Jul 8 2009  by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL are set to make their second summer signing after agreeing a deal to bring promising French left-back Chris Mavinga to Anfield.

The France under-18 international has been snapped up from Paris Saint Germain under the nose of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger who was keen to take Mavinga to the Emirates.

Liverpool will have to pay PSG a compensation fee for the 18-year-old who was yet to sign a full contract with the French club.

Mavinga’s recruitment is timely with Fabio Aurelio set to miss the start of the season with a knee injury and Andrea Dossena likely to leave Anfield should Liverpool receive a suitable offer for his services.

Emiliano Insua underlined his promise last season but Benitez will be happy that the young Argentinian will face increased competition for his place when the new season gets under way.

With Glen Johnson already signed from Portsmouth in a club record deal for a defender, the Reds boss has clearly earmarked Liverpool’s full-back positions as areas which can be improved.

Johnson was today undertaking his first day of training as a Liverpool player as he and fellow England international Steven Gerrard joined in with their team mates at Melwood.

Benitez gave the England duo an extra few days holiday to allow them to recover from their excursions with the national team in early June.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are continuing to play cat and mouse with Liverpool over Xabi Alonso.

Real president Fiorentino Perez is desperate to make Alonso his latest big name signing at the Bernabeu but with Benitez adamant that his midfield playmaker is not for sale Real sporting director Jorge Valdano has admitted the Spanish giants may be priced out of a move for the 27-year-old.

“Liverpool have adopted a position that is making it very difficult for us and right now we can see ourselves distancing ourselves from the player,” said Valdano.

“There are people who are a little bit mistaken when they speak with Real Madrid.

“When we ask after a player they think it is a great economic opportunity and they go beyond what is reasonable.

“We are looking at alternatives to Xabi. He is great at distributing the ball and we need someone who runs the game but there are very few players in the world who can do what he does.”

Valdano’s comments will cut little ice with Benitez whose relationship with Real’s sporting director is difficult at best.

In the absence of any formal indication from Alonso that he would like to quit Anfield then Liverpool will not be compelled to sell no matter how much pressure Real put them under as the Spanish international still has three years remaining on his contract.

So unless Alonso puts in a transfer request or Real make the Reds an offer they cannot refuse the player will stay.
