Aston Villa are bracing themselves for a £20million battle for Ashley Young with Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.
But ex-Celtic boss Martin O'Neill has warned potential bidders to expect 'short shrift', the News of the World says.

That will not deter Kop boss Benitez, who is also on the verge of winning his fight to keep midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The lure of a Premier League title challenge and Champions League action at Anfield will be tough for Young to resist, especially in a World Cup season.

Benitez and O'Neill fought a bitter transfer war over Gareth Barry 12 months ago. The Villa boss frustrated Benitez on that occasion, when the Anfield board refused to meet the midfielder's £18m valuation.

This time Benitez can expect the funds to get his man, although Villa recently slapped a £30m price tag on the 24-year-old.

Young is a good player in an eratic team. For 20+ million it shows how nuts the football world has got. Not enough quality for LFC.

ashley is a good plyer....hope he will join us asap...

Im a big fan of this player and i think we would have a star player if he came but would i replace him with Benny who looks set to play on the left wing this season? not a chance

C'mon people, this proposed transfer is a non-starter from the beginning. Rafa and Martin O'Neill do not have the most cordial of relationships, in fact it may border on antagonistic if not outright hostile. Martin O'Neill in my opinion has always had a anti-Liverpool stance, which was exacerbated by the last seasons transfer dealings where we must admit that Liverpool and Rafa were not entirely propitious in their conduct, though O'Neill too was responsible for escalating the situation into a media circus.

Martin O'Neill has had a soft spot for Fungus and Utd and has been touted as one of those likely to takeover from the whiskeynose. The glowing tributes to that old pervert at the end of the game where we thumped Villa 5-0 was but one example of this. This man will never dare have a cordial mutually beneficial dealing with us lest it upset the scum...This is not to say that Martin O'Neill is a w**ker...I personally feel he's a very good manager and a decent man to boot.. but when it comes to self-preservation, a man's gotta do what he's gotta do.
