Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill believes free-spending Manchester City could win this season's Premier League title.

A summer of unprecedented spending at Eastlands has seen expectation levels soar at Eastlands, with Mark Hughes showing no sign of slowing his recruitment campaign despite the high profile additions of Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Defender Kolo Toure is expected to join the City revolution from Arsenal, while it is anticipated they will also step-up their pursuit of Everton defender Joleon Lescott.

O'Neill's Villa side, who have made massive strides of their own over the past few seasons, are one of those expected to be overhauled by City.

But, far from expressing bitterness at the shift in power, the Northern Irishman has revealed his excitement at events in Manchester, and believes Hughes' men should now be placed alongside city rivals United, Liverpool and Chelsea as genuine title challengers.

"This Manchester City side is going to be so, so strong that they can withstand anything," O'Neill said.

"City might not be favourites to win the league but they should be. If Toure comes - and they still haven't stopped spending - they have as good a chance as anyone of winning it.

"This situation at City reminds me of Chelsea about five years ago - you can have great success if you can accumulate a group of top-quality players over a short period of time.
      Deflated

"There's part of me that's actually quite excited to see how they will do. It's as if the Premier League has been reinvented."

O'Neill does, however, admit that his attempts to break into the top four are likely to be rendered unsuccessful by City's splurge.

"I'm deflated by it," he added.

"You think, 'Well, you got quite close last year and suddenly another club has just stepped over you'. It kind of punctures you. I'm sure if you asked "The Chosen One" at Everton he would think the same.

"I would say the top four has become a genuine top five. They're even seemingly putting it beyond the sides who would be competing within the top four."

      What an idiot.

I would be curious to see how these amazing players would react to a string of dodgy results, that's where the 'team' element comes in, I don't know if Mark Hughes will be able to make them all bond if they're just in it for the cash.

"There's part of me that's actually quite excited to see how they will do. It's as if the Premier League has been reinvented."

      Tit.

How can such ludicrous spending be a good thing for any league?

The boundary between the bigger/richer clubs will continue to increase, he should be shitting his load, not be excited. ::)

      What?

Doesn't he manage Villa? Man City are one of his biggest competitors for 4th/5th/6th for fucks sake! Can you imagine if Man United had another injection of money and Rafa was like 'I'm interested to see how they do this season'.

      What a dick head!

He highlights his excitement but is deflated? Abit of Kevin Keegan about that one.

Shows how F***ing stupid he is. Instead of seeing a new challenge, he throws in the towel already and tells his players 'Give up, we'll never make it'.

      MON is a total fuckwit.

I think it's time to take City seriously. All they need is a CB and they have a great 1st team:

      Given

      Richards
      Toure
      Lescott?
      Bridge

      De Jong/Barry
      Robinho
      Ireland
      SWP

      Adebayor
      Tevez/Santa Cruz/Bellamy

Disagree, they have only been signing 2nd rate players who only care about money (as evident by them leaving/turning down Europe).

Also there will be so much rotation in attack they will struggle for goals. Especially when Tevez isn't exactly prolific, Bellamy is sh*te, Santa Cruz had 1 good season and Adebayor takes 10 attempts to score.

People slated Rafa for his rotation but Hughes will be rotating so much the players will never have full confidence because they will play one week and not play again for 2 or 3.

Mid table again is what i think they will be fighting for.

City need to actually gel as a team, and be consistent. No amount of money can buy that. All them ego's are going to clash in the changing room, plus the fact that Bellamy is liable to bring out a golf club at any moment.

Could also do without a sh*te manager.

I really think they're a threat to the top four. There's no two ways about it, they have a very good starting XI, and they're beginning to work on strength-in-depth already.

I'll be the first to admit that it worries me.
