Sign the Hillsborough petition: Justice for the 96!

       http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/JusticeForThe96/

A NEW e-petition in Tony Blair's in-tray is demanding a public inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster.

Tabled on Friday by Reds fan Richard Buxton, it has already gathered more than 600 sig-natures.

He said: “Thousands of campaigners the world over, as well as the families of the victims, will not rest until the real culprits are revealed in a fresh public inquiry and then taken to task.”

On April 15, 1989, 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death on the Leppings Lane terrace at Hillsborough stad-ium, Sheffield, during an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

An inquest declared no-one responsible for their deaths and the subsequent inquiry by Lord Justice Taylor decided against prosecuting police officers or stewards but resulted in the introduction of all-seater stadia for top clubs.

A civil prosecution for manslaughter taken by the Hillsborough families in 2000 against two senior officers failed and a judge blocked a retrial.

Since then numerous appeals for a further investig-ation have been turned down by successive governments despite claims of a cover-up.

Downing Street said that the prime minister “takes ser-iously” those voters who make the effort to express their views on his website.

But Walton MP Peter Kilfoyle, whose constituency includes Anfield, warned that the e-petition could cause more pain for the families.

He said: “I don't know what it would serve to do. There is a difference between having inquiry after inquiry and obtaining justice.

“The families felt that prosecutions would give them closure. My fear now is that another inquiry would only open up many of the old wounds.”

The move follows the 45,000 people – enough to fill Anfield – who in the month up to last week signed up to a call to give a posthumous knighthood to legendary Reds manager Bob Paisley.

      Signed.

The MP saying this might upset the families doesn't know jack. Does he really believe any family member would be happier forgetting about what happened rather than seeing the perpetrators brought to justice? Unfortunately I feel there will never be full closure for the families of th 96, regardless of what's done about it now there will always be the bitter aftertaste that nothing was done for so long. Still something's better than nothing, and I'm sure it would be a great help to family members to see the relevant people punished. That pr!ck McKenzie needs to be the subject of a class action by fans of LFC for slander too. The police may have f#cked up that day, but none of them intended to kill anyone when they went to work. McKenzie knew exactly what effect that story would have on the people associated with the club, probably knew that the source wasn't reliable, but decided to print it anyone. Class A c*nt & he needs hanging  >:(

If you had even the slightest clue of what we are fighting for you wouldn't make such a ridiculous statement. Do some research then come back and give me a reasoned argument on why we should "Move on".

You've got a 'justice' petition in your signature so that two players can play for your club, and then you enter the debate in to this thread  for justice for 96 people who died at a football ground thanks to incompetent policing and you say 'don't live in the past'.

You need to open your eyes and look around you.  I really don't have the time, or the inclination, to explain it all to you.

Well, just got an email back from 10 Downing St.
I'm not surprised by the result. But it was worth a shot wasn't it!!!
The fight for justice goes on.
      RIP 96

      Here's the email:

      JusticeForThe96 - epetition reply12 June 2007

      We received a petition asking:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to authorise a new public inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster."

      Details of petition:

"On Saturday 15th April 1989, 96 Liverpool fans were tragically killed on the Leppings Lane terrace at Hillsborough stadium. The verdict from the inquest that followed declared that no one was accountable for the disaster. Thousands of campaigners the world over, as well as the victims families will not rest until the real culprits are revealed in a fresh public inquiry into the disaster and taken to task."

Read the Government's responseThe Government sympathises with the families and friends of those who died at Hillsborough and the grief that they have suffered. In 1997/98 then Home Secretary, Jack Straw, asked Lord Justice Stuart-Smith to consider whether there was any new evidence then available which would justify a fresh inquiry into the 1989 disaster.

Lord Justice Stuart-Smith considered, in great detail, all the evidence which was put to him. This included all the relevant evidence presented to the earlier inquiries and inquests. He looked equally rigorously at all the information presented to him by individuals and official bodies, including those representing the families of those who died, and others who had acted in support of them. However, he concluded that there was no basis for re-considering previous criminal, disciplinary, public inquiry or inquest decisions.

Accordingly, the Government's position remains as set out in the statement made in Parliament by Jack Straw on 18 February 1998, which can be found on the website
