      UEFA Champions League Qualifiers 09/10
      Jul 31, 2009 05:06:37 am
Well it looks like the Champions League is at the point where some club we heard of are playing to see who getting into the group stage of the competition. This year format is different from the past years but should get interesting when they get the final qualifier round with sides like Arsenal and Lyon are in the draw. Anyway the result of the past round 1st leg.

      Quote
      Champions Path

      Aktobe 0-0 M. Haifa
      Bakı 0-0 Levski
      Salzburg 1-1 Dinamo Zagreb
      Ventspils 1-0 BATE
      Levadia 0-1 Debrecen
      Sheriff 0-0 Slavia Praha
      APOEL 2-0 Partizan
      Slovan Bratislava 0-2 Olympiacos
      Zürich 2-3 Maribor 2-3
      København    3-1 Stabæk

      Non-Champions Path

      Sporting 0-0 Twente
      Shakhtar 2-2 Timişoara
      Celtic    0-1   Dinamo Moskva
      Sparta 3-1 Panathinaikos
      Anderlecht    5-0 Sivasspor

To explain it, the 5 winners of the non-champions path will be in the random draw with Arsenal, Lyon, Athletico Madrid, Stuttgart and Fiorentina to play for 5 spots in the group stage. While the 10 winners of the champions path will be in a draw then the 5 winners of those games will be in the group stage.

Think its a shame two British teams clash so one must go out already. There seems to be a couple of signs early that we may struggle to dominate the competition as in recent years.

Big names are heading to the continent after Real Madrids sudden 170 million spend and the conservative approach by managers in the prem. Man City only seem to be stalking players from the prem, so thats not helping either. Maybe its got something to do with those tax laws and the pound crashing against the euro.

Good, and it's a shame the mancs and chelsea couldn't be knocked by the end of the group stages.

I think Arsenal will win it but it will be interesting to see how well they do in the first leg in Glasgow as not many teams come away with a win from Park Head. I think it could make it interesting for a second leg back in London if Celtic can get something like a 2-0 win.

Celtic haven't lost at home in Europe for ages.

Can't see Arsenal changing that with their weakened back and forward lines.

I think the only team to beat them at Park Head in the last 6 years were Barca

Does anyone know when the games are?

Next week is the first leg and the second leg games will be the week after than at the end of the month they have the Super Cup game and the group stage draw

Hope Celtic can dump the Gunners out but I'm not sure who I'd put my money on. Hopefully Celtic can get a result at Parkhead and frustrate Arsenal at the Emirates. I have a feeling it will be difficult though even at Parkhead because Arsenal are quick and dangerous on the break and Celtic are not too impressive when it comes to keeping the opposition out. We'll have to wait and see though. The Champions League can be very unpredictable. Awesome competition. I'm looking forward to it all starting again.

Arsenal are a bunch of whinging bas**rds.  Every time a Celtic player touches one of them they lay writhing on the ground but always get up when play resumes.  They seem to think their perfect football doesn't merit being broken up by a strong, tough challenge.  Would love to see Celtic win this one.

EDIT. Is this the same ref as the CL final last year?

Yes it is the same ref.

And its been argued both ways as to who sang it first.

I've got a footy quiz book somewhere that states that Liverpool were the creators of the song.

Was Definately us, we adopted it in the 60's when it was in the chart and Celtic started it when they were on a march for European cup 4 or 5 years later.

Good game this though, the ref is letting play continue. That DM for Celtic - N'guemo or whatever his name is looks quality.

Oh joy, Wenger will be crying about his players being kicked after the match. If Fabregas learnt what his feet where for we would have one of those yellows.

Me and LFCBAFC have been saying for months. Arsenal are the luckiest team in the world, by quite a stretch, certainly up there with Man Utd. The amount of own goals, last minute goals, deflected goals and penaties they get is unbelievable.

But to be fair, Scottish football is absolutely terrible.

I'm not even sure they deserve automatic entry to the Champions League group for the winners.

Agreed, he looks comfortable both in defence and in midfield. Strong, agile, very good on the ball, good tackler. Could turn into a really great player and to be honest I don't think Arsenal need to go looking for a defensive midfielder if they can keep this lad fit.

I watched the Arsenal vs Celtic game and to be honest it was a bit boring of a game. Arsenal did play better Celtic on the whole but were lucky with both goals which pretty much killed off the tie I would say.

I think people have to understand, in footballing terms diving for a penalty is the equivolent of "murder" these days.
It is punishable by death at the very least.
But in the case of Eduardo we would sooner keep him alive because playing for Arsenal is like a sentence worse than death anyhow! ;D

If it wasn't for Boruc saving Celtic's blushes then Arsenal would be 7 up by now.

If it wasn't for Boruc saving Celtic's blushes then Arsenal would be 7 up by now.

Again it just highlights the gulf in class between English and Scottish football.

It's funny how Mowbray finished bottom of the PL and still managed to get the top job in Scotland.
