      The 09/10 Football League Season
      Aug 05, 2009 05:17:38 pm
The new football league season gets under way on Friday with a Championship match between Middlesborough and Sheff Utd. Both teams will be looking for promotion so it should be a good curtain raiser. The match is live on Sky Sports 1 with kick off at 8 o'clock.

      Rest of the opening weekend fixtures are this;

      Saturday 8th August 2009

      Championship:

      Cardiff v Scunthorpe
      Crystal Palace v Plymouth
      Derby v Peterborough
      QPR v Blackpool
      Sheff Wed v Barnlsey
      Watford v Doncaster
      Reading v Notts Forest
      Preston v Bristol City
      Leicester v Swansea
West Brom v Newcastle 17:30 KO

      League 1:

      Gillingham v Swindon 12:30 KO
Southampton v Millwall 12:45 KO, live on Sky Sports 2
      Brighton v Walsall
      Leeds v Exeter
      Norwich v Colchester
      Yeovil v Tranmere
      Southend v Huddesfield
      Oldham v Stockport
      MK Dons v Hartlepool
      Charlton v Wycombe
      Carlisle v Brentford
      Bristol Rovers v Leyton Orient

      League 2:

      Aldershot v Darlington
      Notts County v Bradford
      Torquay v Chesterfield
      Shrewsbury v Burton
      Rotherham v Accrington Stanley
      Port Vale v Rochdale
      Northampton v Macclesfield
      Bury v Bournemouth
      Crewe v Dagenanam and Redbridge
      Lincoln v Barnet
      Morecombe v Hereford
      Cheltenham v Grimsby

      Sunday 9th August 2009

      Championship:

Coventry v Ipswich 12:45 KO, live on Sky Sports 2

My predicitions for the season are

Championship up - Ipswich (I think Keane will have them playing well), Sheff Utd (narrowly missed out last year, I think they'll go one further this year), Reading (have good players and Rodgers looks like a good up and coming manager)

Championship down - Barnsley (very poor team), Doncaster (struggled last year and I expect them to do so again), Scunthorpe (just came up and don't have the squad to stay up I don't think)

League 1 up - Charlton (went down but are building again), MK Dons (Ince back as manager, he's good at this level), Millwall (good manager in Jackett and aren't a bad football side)

League 1 down - Gillingham (only just came up and I expect them to struggle), Hartlepool (never been convinced by them since they came up), Stockport (smallish club and I just think they'll struggle), Brentford (newly promoted and looked good last year, still expect them to go back down)

League 2 up - Burton (only just came up but it seems whoever comes up from the conference does well the following year), Crewe (if they can produce a few more youngsters into the side, could do well), Notts County (have the money to spend along with Sven, must be the obvious choice), Bradford (went off the pace a bit last year but I expect them to go all the way this year)

League 2 down - Accrington Stanley (struggled last year and I expect them do so again) Bournemouth (struggled last year, granted due to points deduction but even without it would have struggled and I think they'll go down this year)

Great thread, I look forward to following this one during the season, as I am both a fan of Liverpool and my local team of birthplace (Gillingham) in league 1.

Recently I was over there from OZ for 6 weeks and went to see Gillingham in the play off finals, and was fortunate enough to see us get promoted on a great day out to the new Wembley Stadium.
Went up to Liverpool and visited Anfield as well and although the stadium tour was booked out when I was there I did do the museum tour, and got some great photos.

Cant wait now for the action to start and see how Johnson and Aquilani fit into the side. There are some great sub plots this season to keep an eye on including

      1.  How will United look without Ronaldo and Tevez, and what influence will Owen have.
      2. How will Arsenal adapt with no Adeybayou and Toure and injury problems already hitting them.
      3. Have Man City bought enough talent as yet to break into the top four
      4. How will Newcastle go in the Championship
      5. How will Real Madrid perform with the 170 million spend on new players.
      6. Will Ancelotti be yet another Chelsea experiment to all end up in tears.

Saints game is a decent watch.

Woohoo    get in there Gills  5-0  beating Swindon

After being there for my teams play off win at Wembley and seeing us go up to League 1 where we are predicted to struggle, I am now excited about this maiden outing in League 1.

I hope we can hold on to Jackson, who scored a hat-trick and has been very influential in the clubs push to league 1.
Back in Oz now I am reduced to following them on the internet, but if we are in the play offs again I am coming over to watch. Hopefully will see Liverpool parade the prem league trophy at the same time.

Norwich conceding 7 in their first home game. Doesn't bode well for life in League 1. Sven will be happy with a 5-0 win.

Coventry v Ipswich tomorrow, should be a very good game.

I look forward to seeing Keane's Tractor Boys.

Good win for Leicester today, I'd say that was the best result of the Championship.

Bryan Gunn sacked as Norwich after just two games one of which was the Carling Cup. Two bad defeats but he only got the job permanently at the end of last season.

Just can't believe that Gunn been sacked after 2 games, do not think been given fair chance and even when someone else comes in they won't have much time to buy players if any.

Bad weekend so far, with Gillingham losing 4-2 to Tranmere.

Amazing performance by the Arsenal hitting 6 against Everton.  You always feel the problem with Arsenal is not their first team, but their squad lacking depth. Lets reserve judgement until a bit later in the season as to whether they have a chance. In the meantime life is good for the Arsenal fans.

Chelsea and Arsenal have started out with 3 points, come on Liverpool, lets beat SPurs and join them.

As expected, Man City looked quite promising in attack, but Blackburn could easily have scored a few too. Looks like Tevez is down the pecking order there too, as he was with Man Utd. Supersub?  may be his career role.

      Forest beat Newcastle 1-0!!

      Blackstock in the 45th minute.

Up to 7th on 19 points, only outside the playoffs on goal difference. 5 behind the top 2.
Forest to go up this year! ;)

Had this link sent to me the other day so thought I would share.  A disgruntled Grimsby fan has a little moan:

Their record so far is P16 W3 D3 L10 GD -16  Second from bottom of L2.  This fella is not a happy bunny.

I wouldn't be happy if my team was below Morecambe in the league either.
