At last my 360 copy will be with me this week - can the PS3 owners just get on with their team & stop leaving posts here that aren't particularly helpful.

I own both the 360 & PS3 consoles - I have my preference but I don't bang on about it every chance I get. 360 owners may pay for their online experience but at least they get a reliable one  ;)

If you own a 360 & are interested in getting the 360 forum team up & running then PM me or Court.

Our connection is reliable, I'll have you know that when the EA servers went down it was for all formats.

I just fail to understand why you'd desert us to join a 360 team that hasn't even been setup yet?

While Wii sales more than doubled from the 981,000 units Nintendo sold in November last year, monthly PlayStation 3 sales dropped. Despite commanding a much stronger software line-up, Sony saw PS3 sales decline from 466,000 last November, to just 378,000 this November. The company's previous generation platform also sank considerably, with the PlayStation 2 moving just 206,000 units compared to 496,000 it did during the same month last year.

Microsoft's hardware sales jumped from November 2007, but not by such a wide margin. It sold 770,000 in November last year, with 836,000 this year.

      • Wii - 2,040,000
      • Nintendo DS - 1,570,000
      • Xbox 360 - 836,000
      • PSP - 421,000
      • PlayStation 3 - 378,000
      • PlayStation 2 - 206,000

Maybe the 360 is older but I think it'll be Sony that puts the PS3 out to pasture before Microsoft even considers doing the same ;)

Too much going on with the PS3.

      Free online play.
      More powerful system.
Free online gaming - which IS reliable - it is third party supported servers which cause the problem.
      Blu-Ray
and PlayStation home will revolutionise social gaming.
Link up with the PSP is just another small bonus.

As I have already learned from ditching my PC in favour of my Mac, Microsoft just don't cut it - personal opinion of course and each is entitled to their own ;)

I'm not too sure the XBox has better graphics.

Motorstorm is a truly breathtaking High Def game.  The addition of the Blu-Ray drive will ensure that Blu-Ray beats HD-DVD to replace DVD as the format of choice in the next generation of home movies.

One final fact concerning the European launches of all three consoles.

Microsoft XBox 360 (launched December 2005): Sold 500,000 units in the first month

Nintendo Wii (launched December 2006): Sold 700,000 units in the first month

Sony PlayStation 3 (launched March 2007): Sold 600,000 units in the first two days.

I think everyone knows who is going to win the next-gen war.

Hmm looking back, these stats no longer reflect the current market - I wonder why?

Possibly but that doesn't explain away the poor sales of the PS3 this year considering it's healthy start. With all the launch delays for the PS3, Sony makes a loss on each sale - that is why the PS3's price remains high, as Sony can't afford to battle it out with Microsoft for market share.

The fact still remains that the PS3 is vastly superior, though.

That may not save it as a gaming platform though which if is the case then Sony only have themselves to blame.

UK,  December 9, 2008 - Sony is to close 10% of its manufacturing sites, losing some 8,000 jobs in the process as the Japanese company feels the effects of the deepening economic crisis.

Sony is still believed to be incurring a loss on every PlayStation 3 that it sells, and financial expert Katsuhiko Mori told BBC that although "the number sounds big, this staff reduction won't be enough. Sony doesn't have any core businesses that generate stable profits - the next thing we want to see is what is going to be the business that will drive the company."

The cutbacks come as Japan feels the impact of the global recession, with the country's economy reportedly shrinking by some 0.5% in the past three months. Expected to be implemented by April 2010, there has been no confirmation where the cuts will take place, nor what impact they will have on Sony's gaming division

I'm not trying to be a doomsayer here but I have seen it before in the gaming industry.

Indeed Sony are making a loss on each console.  As they did with the PlayStation 2.  Not a new concept and they make their money back from the licence on game sales.  Plus I'm sure they make a pretty penny out of the store.

My gut instinct is that the blu-ray drive holds the key to this.  Just as the PS2 did well because it effectively introduced the DVD.

The other option is that there is no war to be won.  You've got both consoles.  Maybe both consoles can co-exist.  If you were planning on running an entertainment experience though I would imagine Sony would have the edge over Microsoft, and the hardware is far more stable on Sony's side.

It will be an interesting 2009 for the consoles.

(PS. I have got a Wii - but that's not a 'real' console. Right ;))

I agree there JD, I hear that Microsoft are doing well in Japan which has always been the motherland of the PS & that the Japanese are starting to accept more western ideas. So we could see 2 consoles maintaining the 'high ground' where in the past it has been normally 1.

2008 was a great year for console gaming - 2009 will be even more so, like you say JD.

PS. Same here, I have a Wii. Console =  :-\ - hoped my wife would get into gaming via it but nah...she gets a DS this year ;)

I make that £466.69 in modern money...

Makes the PS3 look like a giveaway ;)

Maybe both the consoles can exist together peacefully. But I doubt it. The owners of both consoles, and fans of either always have an opinion which they won't change about there gaming system. They should just accept the fact that people have different opinions. I'm not sure why PS3 fans won't admit that the 360 is far superior. :f_tongueincheek:

i personally dont do consoles, i reckon the pc with a dual core processor and a dx10 vid card with 512 ram inside beats both consoles hands down, and you can play most of the games on them anyway, and get them a whole lot cheaper

if i was to buy one, i would wait for the ps3 to come down in price to about 2 ton ...ps3 is best of teh 2 but pc beats them both for versatility, price and you can plug them into your hdtv's these days

      Console showdown off IGN.

Check the second page too. I think based on that, and the 2 of the 3 reviews before that one, PS3 is the better console in 2008.

I've been trying to decide between the two consoles and this thread has cemented my decision. A PS3 it is. Will have to wait until it comes down in price or else I may make a trip across the border to Newry to get a few bucks off.

In my opinion you've definitely made the right decision. PS3 had better exclusives this year aswell, which was XBOX 360's strongest point before. PS3 had MGS4, LBP, Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2, Valkyria Chronicles. Whereas on the other hand, the XBOX 360 had a relatively weaker lineup of Gears 2, Fable 2... (can't think of any more high rating exlusives).  Also, the PS3 will be even stronger next year with GOW 3, Uncharted 2, and Killzone 2. Seems the PS3 is growing in every department, what now also Playstation Home is out and expanding.

Add Left 4 Dead to the list on the 360 & stating that the 360 has had a relatively weaker lineup is a nonsense. Next year = Halo 3: ODST,
Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2, Divinity 2. Remember exclusives are not everything & if we compare the game title base of each console then there's more depth to the 360, currently.

PS Home is a joke, surely?!

Well alot of my mates have 360's and I can just say "God of War 3" or "Killzone 2" or "Little Big Planet" its great. The only 360 exclusive i really like the look of is Gears 2. Halo ive played, it was poor
