Champions league draw 09/10 [27 August - 5pm]

What would be our best possible draw? Were in pot 1. I know the second leg is to be played in the 4th round qualifiers but here is a seeding list.

From that list I'd be very happy with AZ, Bordeaux and Zurich. Not too much distance in travel and 3 teams that we should have too much for even if not at our best. Worst case would be Real, Kiev and Haifa for me as Kiev in the ice and snow could be dodgy a trip to Israel a huge security headache and Madrid would be on a revenge mission

Got to say all this pot business is completely messed up. How the F**k are Sevilla in Pot 1 and Bayern who didn't even qualify for the CL last season there too? And then you've sh*t teams like Rubin Kazan and Unirea Urziceni who don't even deserve a place in the premier club competition in the world. Complete shambles if you ask me.

I think its based over your 5 year history in Europe and then I think they take in how the national team have performed as well? Could be wrong on that

I think you're right about the history in Europe (not sure about the national team) but I think it's unfair that Sevilla improved their coefficient in the UEFA Cup and reap the rewards in the CL by being a top seed. UEFA Cup and CL performances shouldn't be mixed together.

I don't like this new play-off system they're using. Teams like Kazan and Urziceni who I've never even heard of getting in when the likes of Celtic and Athletico are getting knocked out in qualifying. It's supposed to be Europe's premier club competition with only the very best getting in.

It is based on UEFA coefficient.
The club coefficient is determined by the results of a club in European club competition in the last five seasons, and the league coefficient. The club coefficient is 33% of the league coefficient plus the number of points earned by the club in the five seasons. Before 2004 the contribution of the country coefficient was 50%. The points earned by a club in the preliminary rounds are not counted.

The clubs get two points for a win and one point for a draw in games of the main stage of European competitions. Participation in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League is rewarded with three points. Reaching every knockout round of Champions League or quarter-finals and every further rounds of UEFA Cup is rewarded with a point.

This ranking is used by UEFA to determine which pot the club belongs to in the preliminary and first rounds of the Champions League, and the preliminary, first and second rounds of the Europa League.

Before 1999 a number of strong teams in the UEFA Cup were seeded such that those teams do not meet in the first two rounds. To determine these teams, the sum of, the ratio of the number of points achieved to the number of games played by each team, was calculated for the past five years.

I think around 3 percent if you count it before groupings stage, but i don't know if the bookmakers already calculate the possibilities. I think it's around 40% if you take into consideration past meetings.

Don't forget Brian, Panathinaikos have still got to play Atletico Madrid in the second leg, and I'm sure Atletico were winning 3-2.

My feeling, we wil be in the same group as:

Real Madrid
Eintracht Frankfurt
FC Zurich

We're definately getting Madrid, then I go for Marseille and Liege.

there a few tough ones in pot 3 and 4, would like to avoid Liege, Wolfsburg,Stuttgart. I have noticed in previous years that sometimes it is better to get a strong team in pot 2 followed by 2 weak teams. In that scenario it becomes a 2 horse race for top spot even if it initially seems like a tough draw. Not that it matters as we have nothing to fear from anyone.I think Rafa prefers not to travel too far so hopefully we won't have to go to Israel, Kiev or Moscow.

Personally I would like Real Madrid, Rangers, Copenhagen.
