      Corner Taker
      Sep 21, 2009 10:42:59 am
I think we have finally realised that Yossi or Johnson taking corners (and Aurelio when he is back) is a must better tactic. Just having Gerrard in the box is a massive plus point. We will grab allot more goals from corners if we keep things like they was at Upton Park.

Gerrard is a MASSIVE aerial prescience.

agreed. Gerrard is also a threat picking up loose balls around the edge of the box. More critically I think Gerrard's delivery can be poor.

Yep. I've said it in countless threads.

Personally I'd have Lucas taking the corners as he gets a decent ball in.

Both Yossi and Aurelio can provide a bit of danger around the box themselves.  But having Gerrard over there at a moment when he could be taking defenders away from Torres and the like is criminal.

I'm not saying Gerrard is bad with corners but the corner of the pitch is not the place he should be.

You know it makes sense Rafa.

Totally agree Stevie should be lurking in and out of the box during corners.

I really dont think taking a corner is as difficult as we like to make it.

Think i wrote a massive spiel about why Gerrard should be in the box rather than the corner in another thread awhile ago, but ill just say here it really is a must he is in there. The balls he puts in are not anything remarkably better than what anyone else can do, but his attacking presence is without saying one of the best we have. His attack on the ball is brilliant, and his positioning and awareness add a real danger to any situation. Having more of our attacking players in the box also gives the opposing defense more to worry about and thus helps to open them up. With Johnson also adding more since he has been here, and then the presence of the likes of Kuyt, Yossi etc to pick up the pieces as Kuyt did at West Ham, it really should be the way we go. Gerrard in the box every time for me.

I dont like watching Lucas take corners as it seems everytime he does it never makes it past the first man. Yossi should be taking the corners for me he gets it in there well and that leaves Gerrard roaming the box to smash them in!

      Spot on.

I'll say it, some of Gerrard's corners are F***ing sh*te, they are either overhit or don't beat the first man.

Has to be said though, a couple of Lucas's corners were a bit sh*t too on Saturday.

Yossi and Fabio would deffo be my choice for corner takers.

Time to get Gerrard in the box, I have no idea why this hasn't been done sooner.

He's a real threat and he'll give the opposition something more to think about.

what if its a sh*t corner and the team break out on a counter, we will be one man down in defence.

carragher is usually the defender who sits back on corners.

It seems like Rafa is now realising this. Over the past few games the corners seemed to be shared between Stevie, Yossi and Lucas.

I want to see Skrtel step up and start burying a header now and again as well.

I didn't mention any other corners ;D, I said if carragher takes a corner and the opposition break, he's still standing by the corner flag and we are bare at the back.

Gerrard is very good in the air (under rated) and he's the best around when it comes to having a pop from outside the box so it makes sense to put him in and around the box.

I wouldn't really have Glen take them simply because he's got a good shot on him. Yossi or Lucas for me.

Beyond me how we cant expect any pro footballer to put in a decent corner. For me Yossi Insua for example should be on corners and there is no reason they cant hit pinpoint balls on the head of Stevie Nando Skrtel etc

It should be between Yossi, Lucas and Johnson in my opinion.

I'm a firm believer that inswinging corners are always best too, get a bit of pressure on the near post and cause havoc so I don't see any harm in a left footer swinging them in from the right and vice versa.

And with Nando, Stevie, Skrtel, Agger (when he's fit) and Carra steaming into the box that's some fearsome aerial targets to aim for too.

Good thinking.  We all know Carragher doesn't play the ball forward anyway so he'll be fine angling the ball backwards in to the box.

Agree fully that Gerrard should be twenty yards out, central when corners are whipped in. He'll up his tally by at least 5 goals this season.

I think we need to worry about defending set pieces than attacking with them just now though!

I think Insua or Aurelio should take them depending on whose playing. They should practise them everyday in training for an hour or two. It's not rocket science. Get it sorted and get other teams to worry about us.

Aurelio, when fit and in the side (think of his free kicks!) as well as Benayoun as already mentioned along with Gerrard would give the side quite a variety of corner kick takers.

True. Liverpool are at the moment, and have been for a long time, terrible in both attacking and defending set pieces. If aurelio does get into the first team he should takes all the set pieces, including the right and left corners. I can't remeber the last time gerrard took a good free kick.

Aurelio, Johnson, Benayoun or Lucas. Not Gerrard (or Aquilani when he comes back), because of what he can do from 20 yards out. Also, he is a major threat in the air.

Aquilani, once fit, should also just lurk outside the box.

Depending whose on the field i would say either Aurelio, Johnson, Babel, or Riera. Definately not Stevie, hes invaluable in and around the edge of the box. Aquilani looks like he can hit a good dead ball too. But theres nothing more annoying than a player not being able to clear the first man paricularly when theyre not under any pressure is there? it drives me f***in mad when they do that. But even the best are prone to it nowadays.

We should mix it up a bit, confuse the opposition, Stevie taking the corners all the time is a big no no. We need him on the edge of the box to thunder one in.

I'd go for lucas or yossi on the left of goal post and Aurelio... I think we more a threat when delivering out swinger than in swinger unlike man yoo, they are more dangerous when giggs is hitting an in swinger, i'm always like "OOH MY GOD" they gonna score... But us in swinger don't fit us especially when Stevie takes them he always invites the keeper too much but when it's out swinger you take it out of the keeper's reach... Most of our corner kick goals come from out swinger... But Aurelio can hit in swinger's very well, his kicks used to have force, accuracy and a good bent...
