      Penny For the Guy
      Sep 30, 2009 10:56:41 pm
I used to love doing this as a kid with me mates but we didn't even start in September.

Coming home before from Lodge Lane way, I saw a couple of lads doing this outside a shop.

Something to look forward to over the next couple of months eh?

Used to love doing this as a kid as well. I remember getting a bit upset one time that we had to throw one I'd made on the bomby as I thought it was boss and wanted to keep it.

      Still haven't got over that.

Haven't seen any kids around here doing it yet. Sure I will soon though.

I wasn't allowed to do it. It was considered begging by my Dad!

I'll knock round at yours tomorrow and we'll make a guy. Then go sit outside the Bargain Booze in Broadie with it.

      Simple enough:

Quote from The Ever Reliable, All-knowing Wikipedia
In the United Kingdom, celebrations take place in towns and villages across the country in the form of both private and civic events. They involve fireworks displays and the building of bonfires on which traditionally "guys" are burnt, although this practice is not always observed in modern times. These "guys" are traditionally effigies of Guy Fawkes, the most famous of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators. Although the night is celebrated in York (Fawkes' hometown) some there do not burn his effigy, most notably those from his old school. Before the fifth, children traditionally use the "guys" to request a "penny for the guy" in order to raise funds with which to buy fireworks.

We used to do it outside the Bluebell, but you could always guarantee some drunk would come out and kick your guy to bits....... so we used to put lengths of 4x2 down the legs and arms!  ;D

Kid outside the Boozer asked me last night...."penny for the guy mister" Not one to miss a bargain, I gave him a penny and took the guy home. Missus was fuming that I brought it home so I kicked her out and me an "Fawksie" (my new best friend) had a very pleasant evening together.
