Idiot Mates - Fans Who Haven't Got A Clue

I've been meaning to post this on here for a while, but after the gem my mate's just come out with I thought now would be the perfect time.

Anyway, I've got this mate (I won't reveal his name) who is probably one of the most passionate Liverpool fans I know, but just doesn't have any footballing knowledge whatsoever. Previous gems have included 'We should buy Robbie Savage' and 'Pennant's the best player we have after Gerrard'

Anyway, his latest, which has inspired me to write this post, is regarding Tuesdays game. This was his lineup:

Initially the lineup had Luis Garcia playing too, after a 5 minute argument & checking on the internet he finally accepted that he was injured!

Just wondered if anyone else had a mate who claims to be a fan but rivals mine for stupidity?

Well i dont know any lfc fans like that, but there is a manc who said that Barca won it in 2005 and 2006, and that they have 7 european cups, he also didnt believe liverpool won the european cup, 5 times, and had to look that up on the internet, and a Chelsea fan who claimed that in 5 years they will be the most succesful club england has ever seen!

I've just started a new job and a guy who works there is convinced the european cup final is on friday 25th. He has booked the time off work!!

^ That's the best!! Though I wish it was the 25th instead of the 23rd. I have an exam on the 25th

I've come out with some pretty stupid 1 liners whilst watching footy..

The best was "Why are they kicking off again?" After Cardiff scored their 3rd goal against Southend back in Sept/Oct this season (I was watching in the Union down ere). Just didn't know we KOd again after scoring HAHA Cos I'm always cheering, and on TV, they don't usually show it - My excuse.

The Barca game, when we got a free kick cos their goalie picked it up but cos their player kicked it back it wasn't allowed - I didn't know that rule.

Yeah - I get called a glory hunting scouse scum bag by my fellow friends.
Why? Because they support Tranmere (apparently the real fans).
Just because it's soo hard to get a ticket at the right time when I have some £££
You know what else bugs me. They say to me, "your not a Liverpool fan because you hardly ever go the game. You're not a true fan" When it's a F***ing £5 to get in at Tranmere AND YOU PAY ON THE DOOR!! And it is also 5 minutes on the bus if that!!
Tranmere never get sell out games. So they are in the comfort zone.

One bloke at work says he supports Liverpool. Now in all honesty I know he does really but 2 things have made me very curious of his loyalties.
In reference the most famous night in recent history this bloke said "Is that the one we won in Turkey?" Okaaaaaay! Which planet are you from?!  :
His other gem was telling me he had bet against Liverpool beating Barcelona at the Nou Camp... A Liverpool supporter thinking it was more important to line his pockets with money than see his team progress in the Champions League 
I didn't speak to him for a week (even though we won!)

And today it got worse but the culprit was not this guy but a C#££$£^ fan.
He said to me (get this, it's weird)
"If we (the chavs) beat you (LFC 5x Champs) then you have to wear a chav top all day or vice versa if we lose".
My answer - "I would not let you near any of my Liverpool tops, they wouldn't fit you you fat b*$t**rd, plus you're not worthy to wear one! And if one of you're tops was near me I would throw it on the floor, spit on it and stamp on it!"

A very poor attempt at humour Kelv78. But then again, coming from the guy who's only post out of 77 that was longer than 3 lines is his suggested team lineup, pretty much what I would have expected. Take a look at the topic title Kelv, then take a look at yours and others that I have slated. This actually has nothing to do with the match, rather idiot mates who haven't got a clue about football. Indeed, I'm sure if you had any mates, one of them would be in this thread right now talking about you. The fact that one of the examples of how thick my mate is relates to tonights match doesn't make this a thread about tonights match. Comprende?

Your threads, and a certain other poster's (who I won't name because we've spoken by PM, he sees the error of his ways and hasn't tried to be a cocky little tw@t) were all directly relating to tonights match. For example, one was titled, I think, come on you Reds, and the content of the opening post was along the lines of 'Can't wait for the match, hope we're gonna win, come on you Reds!'. Can you see the difference there Kelv?

Anyway, all in all, a very poor attempt, and I'm only going to give you 2 out of 10 for this one. If you would care to practise a bit harder and come back with another jibe at me, please feel free to do so. However, I very much doubt you will, just as I very much doubt we'll be seeing you around here for much longer. You're type, and by your type I mean posters with no real opinion who never post more than one line & only turn up before the big games, never seem to hang around for long. I'm pretty sure we'll see you here until we pick up number 6, then you'll be gone til next May.

Loads of the guys in my pub do bets like this, usually Man Utd - Arsenal related. I couldn't do it, I couldn't wear one of them two or a Chavski shirt ever in my life If Utd beat Arsenal, my mate Nathan's bro Luke who's an Arsenal fan has to wear a Utd shirt for 3 games the next season, and vice versa. And they all take pictures. Funny but I just couldn't do it myself.

One of the best Welsh-English banters though, when they go "I wipe my arse with your flag" My dad/bf/bf's dad usually go back "My flag is too good for your sh*t" or "My ass is too good for your flag to touch it" .. Haha funny as.

A mate of mine who supposedly supports United, even though he doesn't even know when they're playing and loves nothing more to gloat in my face when they beat us came out with a real gem a few years back.

We where talking about teams you would have a soft spot for in the lower divisions, he said Man City where his favourite team from division one(when they where there)!!    He didn't have a clue what we were laughing about or what the fuss was that Man City where his second favourite team when he supposedly supported Man Utd. BTW we aren't mates anymore as he drove me too far few years back when United beat us!!!

Well I do support Man United and it's great right now but I was a regular from the mid seventies to the late eighties but that's when the prices started to bite, when I was a regular I went to every home game and at least half of the away games but it was affordable. It's disgusting that the ordinary fan can't afford to go regular any more, I was in my teens and twenties and I could afford it easily, now I'm in my forties and I can't, isn't that supposed to be the other way 'round?

Anyway I know lots of City fans who don't have a clue, a few weeks ago my City supporting nephew went to see them play Reading, they got beat but he said they were much the better team, I read the paper the next morning and it was the complete opposite...

in the pub today in LA there were a tonne of newbie LFC fans wearing all the shirts and even though I love the strength in numbers the guys had no idea of the players or tactics or far MORE importanyly...the history of our glorious club? today will have given them a lesson, I hope.  Eddie C as always its a good topic to expose the frauds or at least give them a chance to get off their arse's and LEARN.....

Or an opinion that Riise is a very average left back and not good enough to play for a League Championship winning side. I do think the Ginger one is poo but I wouldn't really play 4 up front

The point was not made through over confidence but because to have comeback and played as well as we did, to have delivered us to the 2nd final in 3 years and to have taken chelsea done a peg or two is a fantastic achievement.....an heroic achievement by a team who the majority were part of the 2005 team...or do you not think that they are legends?

No I don't think any player can be considered a legend until retirement and we have seen what they have done for our club over a whole career rather than a couple of cup finals, but if they can keep winning and doing well for us then at the end of the carrear then I would consider them legends, but some of the players are well on their way to becoming legends (Stevie G, Carra, Alonso, Finnan)

Fair enough...suppose depends upon your definition of 'Legend'....regardless....the point wasn't one of over confidence at all as I've made clear on other posts....just pointing out we shouldn't slate players who have got us to the final and that they were heroic....its going to be a great final none the less....

This story goes back a few years but one I'll never forget. What about the mancs missus who  tried to but him a season ticket and waited on the list for about eight years. Eventually got two, one for the old man and one for the son. Could only afford it for one season. On boxing day, the feller in the next seat in the stand says " Where ave you two been, Iv'e been wondering who had the tickets for these seats?"
 "Yeah" he says, " my wife bought us the season tickets and saved them for us for Christmas presents."  What a tart !!!!

Just think, you could have been in that if we hadn't beaten you for the 2nd time!" I drove off laughing, again!

I must be really lucky as all my mates are really knowledgable about football and wouldn't last five minutes round here if they were knobheads, oh hang on I'm wrong, now I come to think of it some of them are Evertonians!

As I'm an old fart (61) anyone I talk to regularly about football is usually of my generation. Some of the younger ones astonish me with their lack of knowledge of the history of the game.

Far too many today allow blind loyalty to get in the way of an honest appreciation of quality performances - whoever produces them. It pisses me off TBH.

I think what's important first and foremost is to love the game. If your club plays the game how you believe the game ought to be played then you're happy or you should be!
 
If by playing the game the right way, things don't go your way then tough sh*t - that's life. What goes round comes round as they say.

The quality of the football is what's top of my "want" list.
Unsurprisingly, when your football is of top drawer quality, trophies seem to take care of themeselves...

Today I have been proudly wearing my Red Liverpool Euro shirt, Blue 5x badge etc.
I saw one guy checking it out nearby and a murmer "Nice Shirt!" drifted my way. Appreciation if not a little subdued!
Then I almost had to run and hide.
I was in Tesco Extra in Purley when a black guy spotted my shirt and shouted to his 2 mates with him:
"Arrrrrr mate, we's just 'ad the best start eva 'cos we beat a team yesterday 6-0!"
His mate said "Who was it?"

I've got a few mates like that!! They follow the team every game like the rest of us, but they have no idea about football whatsoever and listening to them talk about what tactics Rafa should be employing is usually embarassing!!

One of my mates in St Frannies when I was a (younger) young'un was talking about England, and about Michael Owen starting to play for them (around the time of France '98)! He was talking him up, saying he's brilliant for Liverpool and England and said 'Owen is amazing! England had better not sell him!' I near wet meself, the soft sod! Still pull him up about this 9 years later!

I have a mate who always puts his foot in it, basically because he is thick.

He once went shopping, took his trolley round the supermarket, paid and bagged up his shopping, then parked his trolley up in the trolley rack before getting his bags out.
Appartently, he stood there for a while trying to work out how to get his bags out of the small gap left.

He couldn't understand why helicopters didn't have the same ejector seats like fighter jets have.

He also asked if it was safe to drink the tap water in Torquay, because he was far away from home.

The premiership is heavy here in Nigeria. But truth be told, People have different focus level, different involvement level. there are some cats out here in nigeria that live and breathe their clubs and they're ready to go to war for their clubs, others are more quiet but well grounded about theirs love for their club. Some know the history of the club, others just love the club and the games as it is now. the common denominator is the passion. A fan is important.
