A few more details (or speculation if you prefer! ;)) from the Daily Mirror:

      http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2008/06/20/exclusive-liverpool-turn-transfer-sights-to-spain-s-david-silva-89520-20614506/

Exclusive: Liverpool turn transfer sights to Spain's David Silva

Rafa Benitez wants to bring in Valencia midfielder after being priced out of other deals.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has added Spain's David Silva to his wish-list, after tiring of 'ludicrous' demands for other summer targets.

And Benitez will be helped in his pursuit of the midfielder as his chief scout is the player's mentor. The player is in the Spain team that has taken the European Championship by storm with a 100 per cent record so far.

But Silva's Valencia club are in financial trouble, and have made it known that they are prepared to sell him and fellow Spain star David Villa.

Benitez has grown tired of the sky-high price tags placed on the wide players he has targeted - with Aston Villa's Gareth Barry, Albert Riera of Espanyol and Newcastle's James Milner all vastly overpriced in his opinion.

After a discreet approach from Valencia, Benitez has expressed firm interest in the left-winger.

The big stumbling block is the fee, with Valencia asking in excess of £20million.

But Benitez believes he has two trump cards.

Firstly, Valencia have to sell because of their money worries, and while they will demand a huge fee, they are almost certain to settle for less.

The La Liga club have to fork out around £20m a month in loans and interest payments on their new stadium.

And while publicly they insist they do not want to lose any of their big stars, privately they have contacted several clubs to gauge interest in Silva and Villa.

Liverpool are also keen on Villa, but with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea circling, the striker will be out of any Anfield price range.

But the Reds have a strong connection with Silva that could tip the scales.

Anfield chief scout Eduardo Macia worked with Silva as a youngster at Valencia.

Macia was a youth team coach when the player broke through to their B team. He helped Silva get a loan to feeder club Eibar, which set the winger on the road to glory.

Silva remembers that, and still keeps in touch with his old pal Macia.

Silva or Arashvin would be my picks for a versatile, skillful attacking midfielder. Both class.

Yeah, I wasn't going to post that article, but there was an interesting bit at the end where we could see that there were plenty of connections between Silva and Liverpool already, and not just the usual "he's Spanish" business! ;) We know Rafa likes him, it just depends if any other clubs push his price up too high for us...  ::)

Seems more likely than the Villa saga. If Rafa is the negotiator and not Parry, might be able to bring the price down a touch.

Maybe it's why we don't hear too much in the papers about our transfer targets: Rafa doesn't want Rick hearing about it because he's afraid he'll mess everything up! :D

Could well be, He did mention that we could get silva if we could negotiate a price of around £17 million with valencia.

When you consider the prices some clubs are asking for mediocre players these days, at that price it would be a steal!

Let's just hope eh? This would be perfect for our winger problems. A forward line of Babel, Gerrard, Silva and Torres is not too shabby.

      Would be awesome.

It's a real shame Babel missed the Euro's. Think it would have been great experience for him. Both him and us may have benefitted.

True i was devastated for babel. As some people have said it could be a blessing in disguise though, he gets a rest and will come back hungry to play. Shame we are going to miss him along with mascherano, Lucas and Leto as he is wanted for the olympics too.

On another note, Hopefully Leto's passport problem will be sorted before the new season kicks off, if we manage to get silva it would be fantastic, it would benefit Leto silva could teach him alot and help him push for being the LM backup to silva. Hoping we can get him.

Hopefully this means the end of the transfer saga regarding Barry. Great advantage seeing as the chief scout is the players mentor!

Seeing this about Silva and reading hat Xabi is happy to stay has made my day, the only thing that could make it better is Rafa saying he will be getting Villa too ;D

True. Although I see Babel being a confidence player. Hopefully the injury and the missing of Euro 2008 won't dent his confidence.

      I don't think they'll risk losing both hands ;)
