Player statues at the New Stadium?
      May 11, 2007 02:10:47 pm
With the new stadium around the corner i would love to see a few statues of the greatest players ever to have worn the shirt at Anfield obviously each era has a differant choice and without doubt mine would be Fowler, but who would yours be

It would be nice to see a statue of Billy Liddle or Bob Paisley, but we've had that many greats at the club if they all had a statue in their honour our ground wound look like Madame tousords!

I would have to say no to statues for the players, there is just to many great players.

Shanks "yes" he started liverpool as we know it today.

Paisley "yes" he took Liverpool to a higher level

Just one of Shankly and Paisley. If you start having statues of players where does it all end?
All other celebrations and memories of our glorious past should be kept for the museum.

Remember Dixie Dean getting the red paint treatment and the same thing happened to whoever the Geordies have outside their ground.

I like the current statue of Shanks, but I think the 'Shankly Gates' and 'Paisley gateway' are also fitting tributes to each respective manager.  I am not personally in favour of a huge hunking statue like the Bobby Moore thing at Wembley because it just isn't really the Liverpool way.  Neither is naming stands - there is already a Shanklly stand at Preston North End.

The 'Shankly Gates' are folklore - along with Matt Busby Way etc.  Let's leave the statues - I would much rather have grinning portraits of our heroes from yesteryear lining the players tunnel to the pitch.

In my opinion, I don't think there is a need for statues. And if there is to be one, it should just be the same Shanks, that's outside The Kop now.
Our club is based on every member being a part of it. A "society". And that's the way it's been for years and that's what makes us special.
For the new stadium, my biggest want, is to take the spirit and history of Anfield there. Not statues.
Less statues, more Spirit and Trophies. That way, our legends will always be a part of our new ground.

How about putting past players and managers names on bricks similar to the ones with musical artists on down Mathew street?
Shankly's could be on the new Kop, Molby's brick could be part of the Cafe and i can already think of a couple of players who's bricks could go to make up the toilet's! ;)
I also feel we should just take the gates, statue and memorial we already have and site them at the new stadium.

I don't think we need any player statues, the money for them could be better invested in making sure we have a huge trophy room with, perhaps, some sort of 'legends' section within it???  ???

Not for me. Keep Shanklys' for sure. I think the 'bricks' idea is reasonable.
I saw that idea in Mathew St. last time I was in Liverpool. It looks good and created a lot of interest for people trying to find their favourite bands.
Perhaps a collage of players faces or action shots from key moments in Liverpool's' history would be fitting.

There's similar thing around the roof of Wembley, with all of the winners of the FA Cup around the roof!
