Fair Play SOS - some good news today, puts a smile on my face anyway

It may not have been the right result on the pitch for Liverpool today, but off the pitch it was a success for the Liverpool Supporters Union, Spirit of Shankly.

A peaceful protest took place prior to kick off, aimed at denying joint owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett access to Anfield. The protest was a success with 8 empty seats in the director’s box during the game and police turning Hicks and Gillett away on health and safety grounds.

SOS posted a short update on their Facebook page tonight saying the protest worked. Full details will be made available on Monday.

Tom and George were on one of their few all-expenses paid trips to Anfield, with it being against a big four club of course. Don’t hold your breathe seeing them against Wigan on Wednesday.

It appears there were some arrests, although one in particular seems to have been a blatant targeting of an SOS leader.

Well in SOS, the message is clear Tom and George, You’re Not Welcome.

This is the story of the day from an SOS perspective.

By about 12.45pm we had each of the four entrances covered by about 10 or 15 people but the numbers grew throughout the afternoon. We had been contacted in the morning by the police who had got wind of some sort of protest (they mentioned websites so quite clearly, and understandably, they monitor what is posted). I have been the liaison with the Police so we indicated that there was to be a protest as we understood the owners where to attend. I was told in that conversation that the Club had said that none of the owners where to attend. The point was made that all the officer (who to be fair is extremely reasonable and fair as far as my dealings have been with him) was doing was repeating what he had been told. We made the point that everyone would look very stupid if it turned out that the Club were trying it on. The officer said he would be personally "very emabarrassed".

We then got credible reports from the people inside the Club at a senior level that Foster Gillett was going to attend. This clearly put a different slant on the misinformation that the police were receiving.

By about 1.45pm it was clear that we could not rely upon anything we were hearing so it was decided to concentrate upon the Shankly Gates entrance and everyone was whistled around to there. With onlookers and those taking part there were now a couple of hundred people.

The stewards were fine (only doing their jobs) but were starting to overstep their authority with stepping out of the gates and asking people to move back. At this stage there was only one officer deployed but shortly four police horses arrived and then a further couple after that. Then a minibus of police deployed by us as well.

If you know the Shankly Gates and Anfield Road there is a small pavement either side of the road by the entrance. We were penned to the right hand side as you look at the gates with horses next to us.

There were a couple of false alarms (Howard Webb's minibus got challenged at one point and a Carlsberg bus got stopped and emptied) but no one senior from the Club was able or prepared to say anything other than they had been told that neither of the owners were coming. Upon being challenged by us about the fact that there were credible sources saying that Foster Gillett was coming despoite them telling the police what they did the response was "he's not an owner, he's only a director". That didn't help the situation.

The crowd built until there was a shout that a silver people carrier had Foster Gillett in it (we had spotters up the road). At this point there was the only flashpoint of the afternoon, a couple of the horses pranced around a bit, one sitting on the car bonnet and the officers jumped in. One officer on a horse was pretty aggressive but the horse deployment itself was over the top and caused more problems than it solved. There was a surge from the pavement and the minibus was stopped. In the melee the police arrested two lads (one a Committee Member) for "public order" offences. The previous arrest was a drunk and disorderly of a bloke who wouldn't stop backchatting the same horse officer who seemed the most aggressive.

The police made it clear that they would allow the demonstration but would not allow the road to be blocked.

The senior officer took a couple of us to one side and indicated that he felt the atmosphere was not peaceful. We had previously asked him to verify who was in the ground and who was not. The view being that if he verified they were already in then that would lower the temperature, but if they were not in then he should also tell us and get verification of who was expected. He said, not unreasonably, that he would be relying upon what he was told by the Club and also the message that he was getting was that the "Club" didn't know who was coming or not coming. We responded by saying that in that case we would remain for as long as we could.

Ultimately the officer said to us that he would not allow the owners to come to the ground as he felt that there was a safety issue all round. We said what did that mean and he said that he would turn their vehicle away from Anfield Road. We said all all that would do would be to see them sneak in somewhere else. He said no, the police monitored all approaches and would not allow them near.

We remained for another 15 minutes or so as the officer disappeared. Next thing is two lads who had been further up the road said a Black Range Rover had stopped and a police officer had got in and turned the car around while staying in it himself. One lad said he was 95% certain that Tom Hicks was in the car.

The crowd stayed a liitle longer (it was now 3.15pm) but we slowly dispersed on the following bases:

1. This is not a one off isolated protest;

2. We had made a very serious point to the Club about the owners no longer being welcome;

3. The police assurred us that the owners would not be allowed near the ground today, and on the basis that we would see if that happened (i.e. that both the police and Club could be believed) - if the police weren't truthful or the Club continued to lie then the next protest would not cooperate;

4. There was no doubt that the protest had made a mark.

Ultimately, I'd characterise the protest as "feisty" but definitely peaceful and non-violent. There were empty seats in the Directors' Box but we await feedback from all sources about who actually did or didn't get in.

We also await information about the three arrested lads who we were told were taken to Wavertree nick.

All in all, the ante has been upped and we'll be back next time we get a sniff that they intend to try and swan in to our ground.

Fair play SOS and well done to the people who are actually very concerned about the financial situation clouding our club.

If Hicks and Gillett were indeed denied access then it's a massive coup. They flew in from the US basically for nothing, only to come to the ground and get kicked out by us fans.

Massive well done and shows how much they're unwanted at the club.

At last a very effective protest from the point of view of stopping the Yanks getting in to the stadium but I wonder what the net effect will be as they apparently only visit for a ''big four' game which as Corballyred states are all expenses paid trips from the U.S.A (at the clubs expense) plus if you listen to S.O.S's account of the day there was an overpowering and unnecessary police presence (again at our expense, I think ?).

The show of force from our fans towards the yanks would normally be enough to make anyone sell up but with these two knobheads in charge all there doing by prolonging their leaving is increasing the debt on our club !
They'll both leave (eventually !) with money in there pockets  so (sadly ) I can't see them leaving any time soon !

In answer to your question it was Moores and Parry who let these two arse holes take over this great club of ours.Even when we were in the old second division I never felt the despair that i do today with Hicks and Gillette.Even then the one thing we all had was hope,and that hope came to fruition when the late great Bill Shankly arrived at Anfield.

Massive respect to Spirit Of Shankly. A monumental effort by the lads to get the message across. Only a slight chink in the Yanks armour, but each protest will slowly and surely chip away at it. At some point it will break. For these men to give up their free time and organise this operation with military precision is nothing short of miraculous.

If only something disastrous was to happen to one of the Yank families? And before i get negged for this comment, do you really think they give a F**k about any of 'us'? They can only drain this club of it's lifeblood for so long, it has to end somewhere. Let's hope it's sooner rather than later.

Just registered on this great site and I have just read some of the posts concerning the septic tanks. I know the money we got for Shabi has gone to make the interest payments on the loan but, is the boycoting of buying official club merchandise the way forward for us.

I don't think that's true, mate. Look in the post match thread and you will see plenty of comments about the Arsenal match and the numerous threads questioning all things Rafa have been bumped back up the list. The efforts by SoS are important and deserve a thread at least.

Angry supporters were keen to identify which vehicle could be transporting the two owners into the stadium so they could voice their frustrations.

The protest was described by both the organisers and police as peaceful.

However, three people were arrested for public order offences.

Two of them were charged and another received a fine.

In the event neither of the owners went to the match, although Foster Gillett, who sits on the Liverpool board, took his place in the stands.

A spokesman for the Spirit of Shankly said: “We wanted to point out their continuing mismanagement and remind them once again that they are not welcome here.”

Liverpool FC fans cleared after alleged ‘Yanks’ race slur against club owners

TWO Liverpool fans were taken to court after police allegedly deemed their chants of “Yanks Out” against the club’s controversial owners as “racist.”

A leading UK football supporters organisation today condemned the attempted police prosecution as both men, one a leading member of Reds fans’ union Spirit of Shankly (SOS), were cleared at court within minutes.

James McKenna and another SOS colleague were hauled off the streets by officers during a peaceful protest against the American multi-millionaires Tom Hicks and George Gillett before the Liverpool game against Arsenal at Anfield in mid-December.

They were directing cries of “Yanks Out” to an expensive-looking vehicle, with blacked-out windows, which was driven through the Anfield Road gates towards the directors box entrance.

Mr McKenna, 22, and his friend, were apprehended by police who, according to him, said they were under arrest for “racist chanting”, specifically the use of the colloquial term for an American.

They were taken to Wavertree Road police station, kept for six hours, before being charged at 9pm with what is now described by Merseyside Police as “an offence of public order.”

But just over two weeks later, at the pair’s first appearance at court in Liverpool’s Community Justice Centre in Vauxhall, the Crown Prosecution Service immediately withdrew their case due to a perceived lack of evidence.

Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters Federation, who were so outraged they gave Mr McKenna legal advice, said he was taken aback by the police reaction to the use of the word “Yank”.

He told the ECHO: “It would be of grave concern if people who lead protests are particularly targeted by police or clubs.

“We live in a free society and people are entitled to put forward their opinions about their football club.

“This was clearly a protest against two particular people, not a general racist slur against Americans. I would be curious of how a court would have viewed this supposed offence.”

On December 13, up to 200 fans took part in the planned protest amid rumours both Tom Hicks and George Gillett planned to attend the fixture.

When one car pulled into the ground, some Reds fans mistakenly assumed the occupants were the American owners and a bout of chanting erupted.

In the event, neither of the owners went to the match although Foster Gillett, who sits on the Liverpool board, took his place in the stands.

Today, Mr McKenna, from Bootle, who has previously confronted Mr Gillett in the city’s Crown Plaza Hotel for an impromptu meeting, said: “I just shouted ‘Yanks Out!’

“The police were out on their horses and they grabbed me. When I asked what for they said: ‘For racism.’

“We were just there to make our point to the owners as we heard they were attending.”

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: “Three men were arrested following a commotion on Anfield Road just after 2pm.

“A 22-year-old man from Bootle was arrested for using threatening, abusive or insulting words or disorderly behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress and was subsequently charged with a public order offence.

“A 30-year-old man from Dingle was also arrested and charged for a section five public order offence.

“Both men were bailed to appear at North Liverpool Community Justice Court where the charges were discontinued.”

Totally foolish.... the bizzies concerned should should be charged with wasting public money and their ability to carry out the job we pay them for should be reviewed.
The fact this case went through the legal process unchallenged is unbelievable and that wants scrutinising also, the whole system is archaic and corrupt.
