The Pacific Mini Series Spring 2010
      Dec 31, 2009 08:59:08 am
If you are a fan of Band Of Brothers you will enjoy watching The Pacific/HBO,It is due for release in the spring 2010.The Producers are Tom Hanks,Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman.
The story is set in second world war and the fight against Japan,a 10 part series made by HBO and Sky have bought the rights.I have spent a few hours looking at trailers and clips from all over the net and I can tell you this I for one will be looking forward to watching what looks to be one of the best series that has been on the box for a long time.
There are lots of graphic shots just like Saving Private Ryan and the scripts are based on actual evens during the Japanese campain in WWII.
Like Band Of Brothers there is a close bond between all involved,The Pacific will be the one to watch in 2010 Guaranteed.

I mentioned this in the thread about what is the best war film you've seen, it's one I've been looking forward to for a long time.

Based on what Hanks and Spielberg have achieved in the past, I expect this to be a gritty, realistic account of what the soldiers went through.

If it is as good as Band of Brothers, then it will be fantastic.

Agree, I can't see them doing anything wrong, if it's even half the series Band Of Brothers was, it'll be magnificent.

Here's an interesting quote from Spielberg, from that site I posted earlier:

Spielberg Discusses Pacific…and Hints at More War Films!
      Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Steven Spielberg, Executive Producer of The Pacific, was recently interviewed and discussed the mini-series with film blog website, The Collider.com. When asked about how long it took him to help get Pacific developed, he said the following:

“I would say years. Longer than I actually remember. It was inevitable that we would do The Pacific with HBO because there was such an overwhelming response, not only from the general public that got very involved in Band of Brothers, but we got so much positive mail. At the same time, that mail said, “I was a veteran of the Solomons.” “I fought on Tarawa.” “I was at Midway.” We got so many letters of veterans from the Pacific Theater of Operations, asking us if we could acquit their stories the way we acquitted the stories of the European Theater of Operations.”

Futhermore, when asked about any future plans to develop WWII films, he hinted:

“There are many more stories to tell, and we’re going to tell them.”

What will these films be? Midway? 8th Air Force? German/Russian Theater of War?

Don't think The Pacific will be the end of Spielberg's work on World War Two, looks like he wants to tell the full story of what really happened.

He has a way of humanising events to make them so realistic and moving, to fully bring home the tragedy of what those poor, brave men suffered. He depicts events with a frankness and honesty - all the veterans seem to agree.

      Can't wait.

That interview has me salivating! His way of telling WW2 stories really is unrivalled. I remember a veteran who saw Saving Private Ryan saying that the only thing he didn't portray was the smell - that's how accurate he is.

Itching for this show to get started.

I watched Flags of our Fathers (which some may be interested in relation to The Pacific - going to watch Letters From Iwo Jima tommorow) last night and whilst the battle scenes were good, they lacked the immense intensity of Spielberg's utter genius from Saving Private Ryan. The opening 25 minutes at Ohama Beach in Saving Private Ryan is the most incredible opening to a film ever. But the half hour battle at the end in the small French town is just as captivating. What a man that Spielberg is. He never fails to amaze me.

Don't want to ruin things for Huyton Red, so I won't say too much.

I was wondering if I'd be hooked, or if the characters would seem as interesting after Band of Brothers - so far I'm not disappointed.

Yeah, I've got the Collector's Edition of Band of Brothers, there's some cracking documentaries talking to the surviving members of the 101st Airborne.

It's exceptionally moving, because you can see how touched they are to remember events from so long ago, it must have been terrifying for them.

That's what I like about what Hanks and Spielberg have done, because if the veterans are pleased with the final result, then as you say, the programme is an honest depiction of the war, which is the whole point.

      No!!

I'm waiting for it to start Bank Holiday Monday, so I can watch it on the box, proper surround sound and everything.

One piece of television I'm actually looking forward too.

The interviews in full are amazing when you watch them and listen to what they have to say, brings a proper lump to my throat when ever I rewatch them.

Personally think the episodes surrounding their time in the forest during winter is Band Of Brothers at it's most powerful best, especially the episode that follows the first-aider/doc around.

It was different to what's been before, but showed another side of what happened in the soldiers experience that I reckon added a lot more of a human aspect.

Tell you what though, It was bloody hard figuring out what was happening in the shooting scenes, I could never tell who was getting shot since It's basically impossible to recognize anyones faces. I guess it was part of the effect that you could only see when the bombs were going off or whatever.

Some really good acting though, really intense stuff, like when that guy was talking about if you moved a step left or right you could've been shot. Also that suicide bomber scene was pretty mental.

They actually haven't even aired the first episode yet here in Holland.

I am enjoying it but I wouldn't want to watch it every night, I'd rather watch it once a week and besides it would interfere with Champions league and Europa league. I shall be tuning in next Monday though.

So is it going to follow the same group of soldiers all the way or does it change the focus at all?

Have you seen Band of Brothers? If you haven't, go see it. But it's the same idea, follows a small group of people, though this one seems a bit more focussed around an individual. Bit hard to say, could switch to another perspective for an episode, but overall it follows the same people.

Talking to myself here I think, but I don't care, this series deserves to be mentioned.

Seen part 7, it just feels like these episodes are getting harder and grittier as they go along.

Some of the combat scenes are incredibly difficult to watch, which only makes it more compelling when you listen to the veterans at the beginning of the programme telling you how it was.

Just three episodes left then, but I can say that IMO this miniseries is without a doubt on the same level of excellence as Band of Brothers, something I couldn't imagine before it began.

Credit to everyone involved in the project, and to the memories of the soldiers who didn't make it home.

Well, I've seen the whole series now and feel I can comment on it as a whole.

I've read quite a lot of commentaries from people disappointed by it, and I can see where they are coming from, even if I don't agree.

My biggest gripe was that the series felt a little disjointed, but since it was following the progress of three seperate Marines rather than a single group of men, I suppose that was inevitable.

Since the series follows a correct timeline, jumps from one main character to another left me a little lost at times. I'll be happy to watch it again now I have a better idea who is who.

What the series did best I think was to highlight the sheer horror of warfare and it's effects on the men who experience it. The characters were well cast, and I was so moved by the stories of Marines Leckie and Sledge that I have bought their books which inspired the series to an extent.

When I've finished them I'll give a brief recommendation if anyone is interested, though both have great reviews so shouldn't be disappointing.

I loved it. It didn't feel that disjointed to me, the concept worked for me. And yeah, some pure horror there, episode 9 especially, gruesome. I might look into those books too, I'm very intrigued.

I do prefer Band of Brothers though, but that's mostly I think because I'm just that much more connected to that part of the 2nd world war, being from Holland. Even if my grandfather was imprisoned in a Japanese camp.

Have you seen Generation Kill too Ayrton? You'd love that too I think.

Bump, mainly for Dexter's sake. ;)

Finished reading both books. "With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa" by Eugene Sledge, and "Helmet for my Pillow" by Robert Leckie.

Both made facinating reading, though I preferred Sledge's writing style and massiv attention to detail if I had to choose.

What I can say is that both men's experiences have been well respected in the series, and if anyone if interested in finding out a little more about them, I can heartily recommend these books.

Agreed in regards to Band of Brothers. I'm so much more familiar with the European campaign. Then again, therein lies part of the tragedy of what happened in the Pacific. People undersell it (for lack of a better word), and the weight of what occurred there is diminished. Strange (for Americans especially) since our entry into WWII was based on an event in the Pacific (Pearl Harbor) and one of our most iconic images is the soldiers, sorry Marines, staking our flag on Iwo Jima.

I'm sure this must be out on dvd. Like you alluded to el b, they would want to take advantage of the first Xmas after airing.

Been out on DVD & blu-ray for a fair while, actually. I'm waiting for the blu-rays to come down in price as i missed the last half a season due to us losing HBO. Brilliant series from what i saw though, and agreed about lack of knowledge of the Pacific front. I know a decent amount about bits of it, but its such an intricate conflict in its details of where and why things happened that i still wanna read a lot more on it.

Laura's grandpa was actually stationed on a little island in the Pacific, some place called Baker Island where basically all that was on the island was an airstrip.

Got the DVD, very happy with it.

One criticism I might have is there isn't as much bonus footage on it as I'd hoped.

I very much appreciate watching the veterans have their say.
