Liverpool facing fight to land Argentina winger Maxi Rodríguez

Liverpool have made an approach for Maxi Rodríguez but face competition from Boca Juniors, the Argentine club. The Atlético Madrid winger, who is out of contract in the summer, has twice met Enrique Cerezo, the Spanish club's president, recently to discuss his future over concerns that he is not playing regularly. He wants a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

Express are also reporting that it's pretty much a done deal.

I don't rate Maxi as I once did, but he could prove to be a solid addition and Rafa must see time for him on the pitch with the team.

Nothing wrong with a loan deal, me thinks. A good bolster to the squad, and would be a continuation of Liverpool's trend of poaching Atletico's captains!

Yep, SSN 'understands' that Liverpool FC have held talks with the player's agent. Looking very likely.

And on 30.06.2010 he is a free agent so if he does well for us in the loan period we may get him without paining anything. I think it will be a good deal if it's true.

They know that they are loosing him at the end of the season so they may want to save money from selary by sending him on loan  :

But Atletico are in deep sh*t so far this season and you wouldn't have thought they'd get rid of their best players, unless they're selling them...

Maybe the player don't want to play for Atletico no more due to their position in the league so they are looking to get rid of him.

I think Athletico are willing to let him go on loan for the simple fact that he wants to leave and to them he is sitting there doing nothing and collecting wages. If they ease their wage bill by letting him go then they can free the money up to give the likes of Aguero and Forlan improved contracts to keep the big boys away for the time being.
