He's no longer at the level of a few years ago but still be decent signing for me

Wonder if Torres requested him? I'm not saying Rafa would get a player just because one of ours wanted him but if Nando likes the idea of Maxi supplying him?....

Our midfield is an absolute mile ahead of Atletico's, though.

      He's 28 right?

Some would say he's nearing his prime years. His prime years could be with us!

Good signing that. Won't cost much being his contract is up in 6 months

Liverpool to sign Atletico winger Rodriguez
      Friday, 1st January 2010

Rafa Benitez has completed the signing of long-term target Maxi Rodriguez, according to several sources and well respected blog Well Red.

According to sources, the deal was being discussed in 2008 – when we first reported the transfer – however, the winger will now join Liverpool on a short-term deal with a view to a permanent transfer.

Rodriguez is currently out of favour at Atletico and out of contract in the summer and would not command a fee if Liverpool look to buy him in the summer.

Rodriguez has scored 30 goals in 107 appearances for Atletico and believes first-team football at Liverpool can enhance his chances of making Argentina’s World Cup squad.

Rodriguez has already scored against Liverpool, last season, when he finished well past Pepe Reina in the Champions League.

Andrea Dossena is also being linked with a move to Atletico Madrid so the deal may include the Italian going the other way.

Won't believe it until it's on SSN and the echo but there you go.

Not bad to get on loan but isn't he getting a bit on now?

      His record:

      1999–2002 Newell's Old Boys 56 (20)
      2001 → Oviedo (loan) 1 (0)
      2002–2005 Espanyol 110 (26)
      2005– Atlético Madrid 121 (32

It's also his birthday torromow :P

I don't get whether that article means we've got him on loan or we've bought him? I guess we'll take him on loan for 6 months, see how he does and by then he will have finished his contract with Atletico so he'll be a free agent?

      Turns 29 tomorrow.

Bloody good signing this, if true.

      EDIT: Word spreading quick, this.

Would like to be able to sell off Dossena for some funds, but I guess if we move him for Maxi it won't be so bad.

In his prime. If we were paying a lot of money for him then yeah, it would be a risk because he wouldn't be worth much in a couple of seasons but on a loan / free, it's a good age to get him.

Only 27 (28) tomorrow so still has 2/3 years at the highest level. Think we will pay around £2m for him if we are looking to buy him. Loan him would be great because we don't pay anything for him and we can let him go in the summer if he doesn't make the grade. I really hope we sign him.

It's most likely a loan, and if he does well, we get him on a free.

      He's 28. Born in 1981.

      2010 - 1981 = 29.

Are you really judging a man on his mathematical skills on New Years Day? Shame on you!! ;D.

Yeah you're right though ;D. I totally agree that a loan deal would be fantastic but Athletico will want something out of it, as much as he wants to leave I can't see them just laying down and accepting us getting him and them getting nothing for one of their best players in the last 4-5 years.

Reports are saying a cut price deal but also saying a loan deal. Who knows but my god it is snowballing. Only heard the rumours last couple of days and now we're on the verge of getting him. Well done Rafa and scouting team.

      That's ok then ;D.

Where would he fit into our team then? I actually think that Rafa is going to use him in the Kuyt role, Kuyt has gone a couple of seasons now with no direct competition for a place and last 6 months he has become complacent in some area's. This lad could well become a starter or give Dirk the kick up the rectum he needs.
