      Best Movie Saga?
      Jan 12, 2010 12:15:19 pm
A bit different from the threads about your favourite film, which is your favourite movie saga, I'd say it has to be a series of at least three films with a continuing plot running through all of them.

I've finally got around to watching the latest in the Terminator saga, Terminator Salvation. The film got pretty poor reviews, but being a fan of the previous movies, I thought it was a really good follow up, and continues the fight against the machines in the future.

I love this saga, but got thinking about others, like Alien. I love those films as well, the storyline, HR Giger's creature, and so on, as well as some of them being directed by Ridley Scott and James Cameron - two of my favourite directors.

I don't know which of the sagas I prefer, both have great plots and characters, as well as horrific monsters and plenty of action! :D

Which saga is your favourite? One of the above? Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Godfather? There's plenty to choose from!

My favourite trilogy is the "Dollars Trilogy", which is the sequence of Sergio Leone's westerns A Fistful of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, but I think it doesnt fit this thread cause they dont have a continuing plot, despite the similarities between those films.

I still have to think a bit more, but at the moment the best sagas I remember are Star Wars (mainly the old trilogy IMO), Mad Max and Back to the Future.

I would say James Bond, but it hasn't got a running storyline in it really. Really can't think of any movie saga's that I really am in to!

Lord of the rings for me, thought it was fantastic from start to end and could watch them over and over again and never get tired of them. :)

Was thinking that myself, though reckon Pirates of the Carribean could be included, especially as they are doing a 4th.

No seriously, I'd say Lord of the Rings was pretty good, loved Rocky too and the Matrix trilogy was great.

I shocked one one has said the Godfather!, not that I have seen it myself. so that one is out for me.
LotR, much too long for me, 3hrs for a film. Remembering being let down at the end of the first film with the 2 hobbits looking a a volcano and saying that's where were going!
Matrix, first film good, but the last two were average, I think they got carried away with the graphics and not the story.
Star Wars, first 3 (4, 5, & 6) were and still are excellent, but the middle one was the poorest, as for the last 3 (1, 2, & 3) less said the better.
      Borne series, great loved them.
      Oceans 11, 12, & 13, again great.
Terminator, good films but the one who played Sarah Coner spoils it for me, have not seen the 4th yet, waiting for it to be on TV
Pirates of the Carabean, Ok can and do watch them, Can not believe BBC showed the 3rd on Christmas ans the 2nd at New Year!!!
Harry Potter, Not as good as the books, you do not need to know what has gone on before to keep up with the film you are watching, so can they be truly a saga.
Rocky, ?? and Jaws ?? First films were good, but then they just produced them to carry on the franchise.

Now I'm stuck between two, Back to the Future and Die Hard.

I have watch Back to the Future back to back a few times and I can not find anything wrong with them, every thing follows on 100% except Marty's girlfriend is a different actress, (wanted more money!)

Die Hard, love them, but the first 2 are a little dated now, so for me it has to be BACK TO THE FUTURE.

(Not seen any of the Horror ones, inc theAlien ones so can not comment.)

Oh yeah, Godfather! Surprised I didn't remember it myself.

Although I never watched the 3rd film, the first two are so good that I'm sure it deserves a mention here.

Another Sergio Leone's trilogy, which doesnt have a continuing plot either, is the sequence Once Upon A Time In The West, A Fistuful of Dynamite and Once Upon A Time In America (this last one is my favourite film ever). Not a movie saga, but I recommend those films to everyone! ;)

I forgot about Die Hard! The first 2 are dated but they are still boss.

Think Halloween could have been a contender if they hadn't made so many cheesy remakes.

      Bill and Ted.

No, for me as a saga that is strong from start to finish, probably between the Borne movies and Star Wars, and Die Hard.

Also love the Man With No Name Clint Eastwood westerns from the 60's.

And no-one mentioned the Indiana Jones films yet? One of the best adventure sagas there is!

Alien was way ahead of it's time.

You only have to look at the design of the Giger's creature and you wouldn't think the film was from 1979.

Does Transformers count yet? ::) ;)

Star Wars-  New Hope, Empire and Jedi..Last 3 too much CGI, not enough character/story development.  Hayden Christianson...Awful choice as Anakin.
      Godfather 1&2
James Bond...Sean Connery Films and New Daniel Craigs.
X-Men...I liked them all.  Wolverine Origin..OK. Could of been better.
      Spider-Man 1&2.  3  Not so good.

Boss of all sagas has to be Star Wars. Love it to bits.

Honourable mentions are Indiana Jones, which was so much fun watching growing up.

Lord of the Rings was an entertaining and great adaptation ( anyone remember Randall's,from Clerks 2, description of the LOTR? 3 hours of walking!)

Back to the Future, Bourne, Terminator, Matrix, Rocky, X-Men, Lethal Weapon have all been enthralling viewing.
