      External Hard Drive
      May 19, 2007 08:05:58 pm
Fumin'! Bought an external hard drive off Amazon three months ago and started to back stuff up on disc from it. But only managed to back a bit of music up and then it conked!! >:(
No noise or movement from it what so ever. Just the power light on. The computer doesn't see it anymore.
There's loads of phone vids and stuff like that, which I really don't want to lose. But if I send it back to Amazon or the manufacturer, they either format it and send me a new one or give me a refund.

Was just wondering if anyone might know where I can take it to get my data off it, without charging me a bomb - like PC World probably will do?

I'd try a shady computer shop.  There's a little one on Warrington Road in Prescot - can't remember the name.

It sounds like a loose connection on the power inside the unit.  The data is probably fine. Get your screwdrives out!

Haven't had a chance to get up to that shop yet. Hopefully this week as I should be finishing work a bit early on a few days.
There doesn't appear to be any screws or anything where you can open it up though? Reckon I'm on a loser?

This is the external hard drive in question anyway.

:D I wish that was the problem mate!

JD, I went down to that shop today (by Prescot museum?) and it was shut! Not sure if it is actually open anymore. But thanks for the help anyway....

Silly question Kenny the power is on but is the USB lead connected properly, it would seem not if the PC can't see it at all? I'm no expert but it's the only thing I can see that would fix it.

No mate, it's nothing to do with the USB connection. I've gone through all the testing in the device manager and trying different USB ports.. When it's powered on, it should make a noise because it's finding it's boot sector, but it's just dead. Doesn't do anything.
To be honest, I think I've been sold a faulty one. But I care more about getting my music and phone vids back than to send it back to Amazon for them to give me a new one, or a refund.
Cheers for your opinion though mate. Much appreciated!!

Thought it was a bit further on past the museum just past The Fusilier pub.  Sorry about your wasted journey.  It's sounding like your going to have to bite the bullet on this one.

Actually, it was just by a pub on the corner. So I presume that's The Fusilier. I got the phone number from the front of the shop though. Just haven't had a chance to ring because work's been so busy. Fingers crossed it's just not open on a Saturday.

Happy days!! Found out there was a little computer stall that would have a look at it in Broadway - ten minute walk down the road from me.  ::)
So thought I would try it one last time before I took it up and it booted up!! Must be a loose connection as you said JD.

Got some backing up to do tonight me thinks!!

Forgot to mention, I didn't walk down broadway with a hard drive. There was no need to go after all. Plus I saved myself the embarrasment...

Sorry for BUMPing an old thread.

I bought a Western Digital harddrive early last year and it stores my movies, football matches, games and all that. It worked a few days ago but I tried plugging it in today but it can't be read on the laptop.

The lights are on. It makes a clicking sound which I found out to be the "Click of death". I have like 600 GB worth of stuff in there and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to do because it would hurt to lose all those.  :(

I think it's dead mate, unfortunately.

Can you give me the Model & Model number? (i.e. Western Digital Caviar Blue)

Based on my Amazon history, it's a

Western Digital WD10EADS Caviar Green 1TB 3.5-inch OEM Internal Hard Drive (SATAII, 32MB Cache, Green Power)

I read somewhere where if you remove the USB cable and turn on the hard drive, and that it makes the clicking sound, it's dead but mine only made noise at the start and no clicking noise thereafter so I'm hoping it's just my USB cable that's faulty.

First off mate, it shouldn't be attatched by a USB cable, it should ba attatched by both a SATA data cable to your motherboard and SATA power cable.to your power supply.

Also, you need to store that drive internally. Any interference with static cause by things such as a carpet, body static, or anything similar can blow your drive.

And probably can't connect another internal harddrive to a laptop Res? Or well, maybe it's possible, but I imagine it's alot of hassle, especially because he'd need his other harddrive to stay connected too, or he can't transfer anything.

Shouldn't imagine he could connect it unless he's opening his laptop up and hooking up the the motherboard directly.

Unless he has an eSATA port... which is possible. But I doubt it.
