      Our greatest left backs?
      Jan 28, 2010 06:11:46 pm
Ok, I've searched the forum and I couldn't see this one (so I apologise if I have missed it and feel free to delete the thread if that is the case).

Left back position is a bit of a problem for us, we've had some great rightbacks recently (carra, arbeloa, johnson potentially) but we have been struggling with the opposite flank for a while. Whilst thinking about this, I got nostalgic and thought "Who in our glorious history would I like there now?"

      Here's my top 3.

      1) Alan Kennedy
      2) Steve Nicol
      3) John Arne Riise

Anyone else? Also, who would we like to have there now if we had the cash? Insua just does not cut it for me.

I am sure D.L.S has run this thread but I will throw a couple of names into the ring for you,the greatest left back list would not be complete if Gerry Byrne is not on it.Alec Lindsay was another class left back as well although he was initially bought by Shanks as a (half back/inside forward ) in old money terms.A left back I admired when I was a kid was Eddie Spicer who unfortunately had his leg broken twice and retired from the game.

Carra in the treble season , also Jim Beglin, might be a bit of a media gobs***e but one of our better left backs until gary stevens made his mark on him , Barney has got to be up there for his contibution to our history with some classic cup final goals , just wish Rafa could find a decent one for now .

      Roberto  Carlos. (Wish) :f_tongueincheek:

      Can only be ....

      The Great Gerry Byrne.

      Scouser and One Club Man.

      The 1965 FA Cup Final

"Gerry Byrne will always be remembered for playing for Liverpool in the 1965 FA Cup Final, which took place on the 1 May at Wembley with a broken collarbone.
He suffered the injury as early as the third minute, but played on throughout the rest of the game and the whole of extra-time as Liverpool won the Cup for the very first time.
The break happened after Byrne was challenged heftily by Leeds United's captain Bobby Collins, but, with substitutes still not permitted by the authorities in 1965, he had little choice but to carry on playing.
He and his team-mates, not to mention Shankly and his coaching team on the Liverpool bench, somehow managed to keep the extent of Byrne's injury a secret from the Leeds United players and staff.

Unfortunately for Byrne the game went to extra-time and Gerry, despite the agonising pain, kept making his familiar marauding runs down the left flank in joining the attack.
Early on into the first period of extra time, he reached the by-line with the ball and pulled back a perfect cross for Roger Hunt to open the scoring. Leeds got back into the game and equalised through Billy Bremner but Liverpool were not to be denied as Ian St. John headed home the winner late on during the second period and Liverpool had finally won their first ever FA Cup.

Shankly spoke highly of Gerry in an interview after the final saying

"It was a performance of raw courage from the boy", high praise from a man who appreciated such endeavour."
