Is there a friendship with Arsenal?
      May 17, 2006 03:34:39 pm
I'm an Arsenal fan with a soft spot for Liverpool. On some Arsenal sites, I see that many Liverpudlians wish the best of look for the CL Final, and would be glad if the Gunners would take the Liverpool's title.
So I thought not to be the only to appreciate both teams. On the forum of the Arsenalmania site, for instance, there's a topic upon a possible alliance/friendship between Arsenal and Liverpool. The major part of the fans intervened - among them many Liverpudlians - has confirmed that their second team is Liverpool (if Arsenal) or Arsenal (if Liverpool). I think that this good feeling is due not only to the classic your enemy's enemy (Manure and Chelsea) is your friend, but also to the fact that both Arsenal and Liverpool fans love attractive, flowing football, played in the way that it has to be played, and are glad when their teams play exciting attacking football, not when they play in a defensive or speculative way. I remember the beautiful squad that Liverpool had in the 70's with Keegan, Toshack, Dalglish, Mc Dermott, Kennedy, Souness, etc., and I always hoped to see again something like that: I think that the Arsenal of Arsene Wenger is worthy of that beautiful squad.
Plus, both Arsenal and Liverpool fans are friendly, and the the two teams are very popular but don't commercialise too much the club. Views?

In Arsenal forum, one Arsenal fan wrote this great post about the friendship between Arsenal and Liverpool:

I think there are a lot of good points but as someone who can remember the '71 Cup FInal and Liverpools domination of not only England but Europe as well...

When the mickies were on top whilst we often heard 'we are the champions' there was never the conceited 'our trophy' mentality of the mancs. Yeah they picked up 'glory boys' but every top team does. (Also, it should be mentioned that the mancs were just as obnoxious and cocky in the 70's and 80's as they are now even though they won bugger all.)

I think their was a slightly grudging respect between the two sets of fans but I do think that '89 changed that to friendship because it wasn't that safe a place to visit before.

Basically, we were due to play a couple of days after Hillsborough and after getting Wimbledons agreement Arsenal told the FA that we were postponing the match. The FA said we'd forfeit the points and our board basically told them to get lost and called the radio who contacted the FA for their side. An hour later the FA (or I suppose it would have been the Football League then?) announced all football would be suspended. That didn't go un-noticed onMerseyside, and neither did the number of Gooners that were at Anfield the next day to pay their respects.

And I think what sealed it was when the Arsenal players came out in thatlast match with those bunches of flowers for the crowd. An incredibly un-English and un-football gesture that was somehow perfect.

And we both hate the mancs...

Another Arsenal fan wrote this other beautiful post:
Where I believe we forged a bond with the Merseysiders was our response at club and fan level to the horror of Hillsborough. We would have played them after the semi final in 89 and offered to call off the game immediately. I remember the Liverpool directors thanking us for that quie sincerely. By the time game got to be played of course it had become the decider for the title. When our boys emerged from the tunnel each carrying bouqet of flowers and handed them over to Liverpool fans in various parts of Anfield they were gobsmacked.

A simple gesture that won us so many friends and a lot of respect. Even after we won the game they continued to cheer us.

Unlucky Arsenal that was a very bad ref.The only benefit for them is that Henry probably won't go to Barca now he was disgusted with their antics on the pitch.

Shocking refereeing... unlucky Arsenal.  The referee should have kept Lehman on and give the goal to Barcelona - it may have become a decent game then.

If anything though it shows just how hard it is to win...

      especially 5 times.

In all honesty (and call me biased) - but it wasn't a patch on last years final..

It just didn't seem to have any of the build up, or atmosphere, or trekking over a Turkish desert.....

I watched it at 12.30 when I got in from work and wasn't that impressed to be honest.Once lehman got sent off it was like watching defence against attack, obviously apart from Sol's goal.Henry, who is excellent, tried too hard in the first 30 mins and didn't look anything like his normal self.

Didn't want arsenal to win it before kickoff as wanted LIVERPOOL to be the last english team to win it but once it got going changed my mind, like barca but wasn't impressed with there sportsmanship or the way they tried to kick henry off the pitch cheating Bas--rds so unlucky arsenal and good luck in the future but not to much . 8)

The evidence of this strange sort of friendship between the two clubs is that in the Arsenal forums have been posted threads for Steve Gerrard's birthday.....
