Am setting up this topic as a platform for people to explain why songs mean so much them, the complete songs that is. The story or message that they portray and how they relate to you.

My first offering is Soldier Side by System of a Down. The song is very powerful and tells the story of soldiers going to war. The destructive grief and emotions that reverberate throughout the families and friends of those that are sent to fight wars by people who have no direct involvement in them. It is widely thought that the war they sang about was the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, though it relates to any war in reality.

How a soldier believes he is fighting for the greater good of his country, but once immersed in the war himself he finds himself alone in his thoughts, even though he is surrounded by his comrades. Questioning his reasoning for war itself. His realisation that he is merely a pawn in a political strategy. How he witnesses the death of close friends and loved ones, whether they be friend or foe. The mothers that cry as they bid farewell to their children, not knowing if they will ever see them again. How a soldier, even if he survives and comes home alive, dies in the war he participated in.

Such a powerful song and I relate to it through a cousin of mine from Chepstow who is a soldier in Iraq. Thankfully still alive.

      System of a Down-Soldier Side(music video)

Dead man lying on the bottom of the grave
      Wondering when Savior comes
      Is he gonna be saved

Maybe you're a sinner into your alternate life
Maybe you're a joker maybe you deserve to die

They were crying when their sons left
      God is wearing black
He's gone so far to find no hope
      He's never coming back
They were crying when their sons left
      All young men must go
He's come so far to find the truth
      He's never going home

Young men standing on the top of their own graves
      Wondering when Jesus comes
      Are they gonna be saved

Cruelty to the winner, Bishop tells the King his lies
Maybe you're a mourner, maybe you deserve to die
They were crying when their sons left
      God is wearing black
He's gone so far to find no hope
      He's never coming back
They were crying when their sons left
      All young men must go
He's come so far to find no truth
      He's never going home

      Welcome to the Soldier Side
Where there's no one here but me
People all grow up to die
There is no one here but me

      Welcome to the Soldier Side
There is no one here but me
      People on the soldier's side
There is no one here but me

      Great stuff.
Sorry to wander off-topic straight away but you know I'll be back with my own contributions before long. It's just that after reading what you wrote, I wondered if you'd seen the documentory 'Restrepo'? I think you'd enjoy it, if that's the right word. It was filmed by American soldiers serving in Afghanistan and is very disturbing at points.

      Pantera - Rise

I wouldn't say this has immense personal meaning to me but I like the message. A call for unity, regardless of race and creed from one of those 'horrible, aggressive shouty bands' ;D.
Despite their heavy, uncompromising sound, Pantera songs actually have some of the best lyrics around, imo.

We've got no time to lose
      Your news is old news
Hate this, hate me, hate this
      Right approach for the wrong
It's time to spread the word
      Let the voice be heard
All of us, one of us, all of us
Dominate and take the motherfucking world

      Mass prediction, unification
      Breathing life into our lungs
      EVERY creed and EVERY kind
To give us depth for strength

Taught when we're young to hate one another
It's time to have a new reign of power
Make pride universal so no one gives in
Turn our backs on those who oppose
Then when confronted we ask them the question
      What's wrong with their mind?
      What's wrong with your mind?

      (Chorus) It's time to RISE

      We've lived with past mistakes
Can we live with our own
      Forgive, forget forgive
Be a man, not a child
There are no tears for peace
      Of the common sympathies
      Educate, reinstate, educate
      A thing of past
      The trouble in the states

      It's time to rise
