I repeat - if he's told he's going nowhere, he aint going nowhere

That only allows him to run down his contract and leave for free the next season and why would we want that?

This thread is a waste of time,no positive debate possible,so should be locked,to avoid the inevitable drivvel.

Better than letting him go on a free. And at least we got about 500k-1 mil profit.

I'm not really saying we should have kept him, just we didn't HAVE to sell him
ie - Bayern turned down a bid of £20M for Ballack when he only had 1 year left to run on his contract, Bordeaux truned down a decent offer from Arsenal for Chamak in the summer - so to have let him leave for free would hardly have been unprecedented

Instead of keeping him "unhappy" for another year, it's better to just sell and get whatever profit we can instead of letting him go for nothing 12 months later.

Either way, Bayern did not get to keep Ballack and Bordeaux probably won't get to keep Chamakh.

No we didn't have to sell him but since we're a F***ing shed load in debt, we're not in much position to turn down £3 million when the same player a year later won't be able to bring in a penny for.

Obviously they didnt/wont keep them - they just looked at it and thought they would rather keep them for a year and let them go for nothing and look at the Champions League campain Bordeaux are having this year with Chamak at the fore-front
I mean, what does £3M get you in todays transfer market (well as we know, it didnt get Rafa anything)

Now I know we're on a strict limited budget (I wonder who's fault that is) but surely with Portsmouth being allowed to sell players outside the transfer window, surely we could get Steve Finnan back at Anfield on the cheap. Even if we sold Aurelio for around £6 million as I think he'd be better sold than sitting in the physio's room, we could find the funds to bring back Steve and find the answer to our left-back problem. Only problem would be he would only be able to play next season due to FA rules.

      Anyone else think this?

Given the time left on Aurelio's contract we would get laughed at if we even requested £2M let a lone 6

Would be a step back, he isn't what he used to be and seeing as he plays right back i think it would be much better for us to push Kelly through than get a player back who is likely to retire  relatively soon.

anyway, with the way Madrid were swinging the dosh about last summer, how did we only manage to squeeze £3M out of them???

      Best £3M they've ever spent.

They got Owen cheap because he was going into the last year of his contract and it was either that or get no money.

just think - if the club told Owen to stick his request, and we still went on to win the Champions League (big if I concede) then Owen would almost certainly have signed a new deal.......

Endulge me on the Billy reference?
£3M was still loose change to that mob - we should have quoted them £15M and they might have came back with £7M

More like they would've said F**k off.

I think the people involved with such things know what they're doing - after all it is their job.

Are they the ones who negotiate, deal with contracts and agree transfer deals?
