What Web Browser Do You Use ?
      Apr 16, 2010 11:29:00 pm
There are many web browser's around the net today and I was wondering what web browser you use and if it has anything to do with how well it works with the forum, please let me know your views on your specific browser and if it works well with the forum.

I for one use Safari for the forum but use Firefox for everythingelse because of the fact i cannot get Firefox to spell check automatically.

Also was wondering if there could be a poll for this topic.

      I use Safari.

Anything less than Internet Explorer 7 is no longer supported by this forum.  In other words, if something doesn't work correctly on that browser, we won't be spending any time attempting to support it.

Firefox and Chrome and IE7+ are all supported by the forum as well as Safari and Opera, but most of the major testing and features are first implemented for Safari browsers. An example is the shadowing under the avatars.

I won't add a poll because I've actually got the cold hard figures.

In terms of the last month on this forum

Internet Explorer 40% (85% of which are IE7 or IE8)
      Firefox 35%
      Chrome 11%
      Safari 10%
      Opera 2%

The rest, PS3, PSP and Opera Mini make up the rest.

It's interesting because not so long ago - approximately 65% of people used internet explorer.

Good to see it changing - although I am still surprised so many people seem to use Firefox (which I used to love).  For me personally Safari wins hands down.

Funny because I had just posted how I have been using safari for this site but just now I had a freak error, therefore I uninstalled it and at this very moment I am using the forum via Opera.

So far in the few minutes I have used it, it has been lightning fast because of this tweak called turbo charge if you turn this tweak on in opera it turns down the resolution of pictures quality etc, most web browsers load up when a 100% of data is downloaded on the page but with this tweak turned on it only waits for 80% of the data making it much a quicker.

So I will not be re downloading Safari and will be uninstalling Firefox also basically now I recommend Opera, ha.

Thanks for the figures JD, sometimes i get all geeky and it interest's me.

Doesn't matter what OS it's run on, as long as it has the relevant resources on which to run on - i.e. RAM, Processor.

But wouldn't Safari ideally work better on a MAC ?

I use Firefox but I downloaded Safari not too long ago.

Might use that from now on.

Edit: Quite like this! Can now see some things I couldn't before too such as the shadowing under the avatars. Also seems that it does a spell check whilst typing which is pretty cool.

Sure, the Mac version would. But there's a decent Windows version, too, so there's really no difference.

I use Firefox at home and IE at work (not through choice).

I wouldn't recommend using Safari on anything other than a Mac, it's too heavy on a pc.

Safari is optimised both for Windows and Mac OS.

Macs don't have different specs to PCs as they're made with the same components. It would eat up the same resources on a Mac than it would on a normal desktop.

I'm basing my 'recommendation' purely on my own experiences and those of my friends. It seems those with Macs get on fine with Safari whereas those with PCs find it a little slow.

It's ok that you don't understand, don't feel bad about it  ;)

Nope, if you're running a mac OS on one side and a window on the other, it may have different usage. They are different operating systems and hence the usage, heavy or otherwise, may vary.

It's the same program optimised for both OS', so it'd use the same resources.

No, since the operating systems are different, the optimisation for both should be slightly different. So it will use up resources differently if its on a mac or windows.

Due to the political problems we have in Iran including lower speed and filtering I've tried and used maybe every single browser to get the safest and fastest and I found it to be Firefox that I've been using for that last decade.

Worth another try with Safari for a few days anyway.

Always seemed quicker to me for everything except Java...but I'm on a custom PC so the difference in speed is very little. Except for IE...hate how it seems sluggish for all the little things.

Internet Explorer users have lower IQ says study
Internet Explorer users have a lower than average IQ, according to research by Consulting firm AptiQuant.

The study gave web surfers an IQ test, then plotted their scores against the browser they used.

IE surfers were found to have an average IQ lower than people using Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Users of Camino and Opera rated highest.

The report has sparked anger from IE supporters, who have threatened AptiQuant with legal action.

Researchers gave over 100,000 web surfers a free online IQ test. Scores were stored in a database along with each person's web browser data.

The results suggested that Internet Explorer surfers had an average IQ in the low eighties. Chrome, Firefox and Safari rated over 100, while minority browsers Opera and Camino had an "exceptionally higher" score of over 120.

AptiQuant stressed that using IE doesn't mean you have low intelligence. "What it really says is that if you have a low IQ then there are high chances that you use Internet Explorer," said AptiQuant CEO Leonard Howard.

The findings have been treated with scepticism by Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University's Statistical Laboratory: "They've got IE6 users with an IQ of around eighty. That's borderline deficient, marginally able to cope with the adult world.

"I believe these figures are implausibly low - and an insult to IE users."

However, Mr Howard said he didn't feel threatened by a lawsuit: "A win in a court would only give a stamp of approval and more credibility to our report."http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14370878

Well there must be some truth in it, as I'm on Firefox, and my Work(NHS) is on IE6 :lmao:

That IE study is brilliant! I think it's a little unfair though, and it isn't a fair judge of actual intelligence, rather it could show a lack of understanding with computer systems.

I use Chrome and have done since its early beta stages. Quickest, cleanest and easiest browser to use. Firefox is also good.

      Internet Explorer story was bogus
A story which suggested that users of Internet Explorer have a lower IQ than people who chose other browsers appears to have been an elaborate hoax.

A number of media organisations, including the BBC, reported on the research, put out by Canadian firm ApTiquant.

It later emerged that the company's website was only recently set up and staff images were copied from a legitimate business in Paris.

It is unclear who was behind the stunt.

The story was reported by many high profile organisations including CNN, the Daily Mail, the Telegraph and Forbes.

Questions about the authenticity of the story were raised by readers of the BBC website who established that the company which put out the research - ApTiquant - appeared to have only set up its website in the past month.

Thumbnail images of the firm's staff on the website also matched those on the site of French research company Central Test, although many of the names had been changed.

The BBC contacted Central Test who confirmed that they had been made aware of the copy but had no knowledge of ApTiquant or its activities.
      Research claims

ApTiquant issued a press release claiming that it had invited 100,000 web users to take IQ tests and matched their results with the type of browser they used.

It also supplied extensive research data.

The results claimed to show that Internet Explorer users were generally of lower intelligence.

The BBC sought alternative views for the original story, including Professor David Spiegelhalter of Cambridge University's Statistical Laboratory, who said: "I believe these figures are implausibly low - and an insult to IE users."

No-one on ApTiquant's contact number was available for comment.

Graham Cluley, senior security consultant at Sophos examined the source material for the BBC after concerns were raised.

"It's obviously very easy to create a bogus site like this - as all phishers know it's easy to rip-off someone else's webpages and pictures," he said.

Mr Cluley also looked at the pdf file containing the data that many people had downloaded from a variety of sources and said it did not appear to contain malware.

They're all better than I.E., for starters.  Not had an issue with my web page shutting down because my browser has encountered a problem since ditching I.E.

You should try Chrome, Firefox, Safari etc., just to see if one feels a better fit for you.

How long's a piece of string?  The forum's on a dedicated server that costs upwards of about £1500 a year.  But for a smaller website - we charge our small businesses a £60 a year retainer for their web hosting. Domain fee about right.
