Reds to wear Carlsberg for final time at Anfield

Liverpool will wear Carlsberg on their shirts for the final time at Anfield this weekend - but it'll be with a difference.


The Danish brewers' name has adorned the red shirt at every home game over the last eighteen years - but as Carlsberg prepare to sign off as the club's shirt sponsors at the end of the season their name will be displayed in Chinese language for the clash with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

In addition to the change on the front of the players' shirts, Chinese messages will be displayed during the match on the perimeter advertising boardings and in the Carlsberg Lounge at Anfield a Chinese competition winner will present a trophy to the "Man of the Match" after the final whistle.

With Liverpool the only UK city exhibiting at World Expo in Shanghai - its twin city - later this year, Carlsberg officials came up with the novel idea of interacting with the club's massive fan base in that part of the world.

Carlsberg Group Sponsorship Director Keld Strudahl said, "We're delighted to have been able to bring about this momentous occasion. We believe it's a nice little gesture to our friends and fans of Liverpool FC in China, where we know the Club devoted huge support in working things out and we also worked hard with all parties to mark this special occasion for the World Expo."

The Chinese Carlsberg logo will be only the fifth logo ever printed on a Liverpool FC shirt. Liverpool FC's first sponsor was Hitachi, followed by Crown Paints, Candy and then Carlsberg in 1992.

Not really bothered about it being the last time we have Carlsberg on our shirts TBH.

What matters on the shirt is the Liverbird, the rest is only there to bring in money after all.

As for the logo in Chinese? Very odd - maybe that Huang fella has taken over and no-one has cottoned on yet.

Me too That new tshirts just do not look right to me without the Carlsberg logo. Besides I have much more appreciation for beer than for bankers but... what can I say, I guess the new offer is better for the club.

Stupid? No. Very artistic for a change. We're after the big fan base, that's what that really counts. Congrats to the commercial team, you have done well. 10% of Shanghai population being a Liverpool fan would easily rake in perhaps millions of GBP to the club.

Aye,we might end up being owned by the chinese in the summer.

I drank Carsberg for about 15 years, certainly through my single beer swilling heydays. As did many of my friends. They did well off us LFC fans.
I've since moved on to stouts and ales and all manner of weissbeers - trying to make up for all the time I spent drinking just the one beer mainly, which was probably not the best beer in the world after all.
Wonder if Liverpool fans will get special interest rates at standard chartered. Bit ironic that in these days of bank bailouts and scandals, it's one of them that's coming in behind us. Hope all the books are in order. To be honest I know pretty much nothing about them, and who cares as long as they give us the money and then stay well the hell away.

Me neither. Might boost our popularity in China as well as theirs.

Money wise they haven't been sh*t-hot, but they've been a close partner for a long time. Now we move in to a big money deal with Standard Chartered.

Have to say, there have been some nice shirts worn with the Carlsberg logo, but no league titles won ( not that i'm blaming Carlsberg ).
