      Jay-Z vs. Eminem
      May 09, 2010 04:14:04 am
vibe magazine hoasted a best rapper alive poll some way back in which i voted along with millions of others. In the finals it came down to Eminem and Jay-Z. now after hearing MTV and numerous other rap sources saying Jay-Z is the best rapper alive

I take Eminem over Jay as far as putting out a finished product goes, I like his lyrics ,style,Flow,The Throw in Em's Voice.

      So who's your PicK??

Eminem shits all over Jay-Z. Easily.

No rapper in the world can drop something like Eminem does! Jay-Z is good and his Blueprint albums are great but they dont come even close to Eminem.

He revolutionised rap to what it is today! He's crazy, he's not afraid and he's brutal.

Not a very constructive post from myself this one, but...

      I think they're both sh*t.

      ;D

If we're talking about rap, then this is as far as I go:

      Probably Eminem.

BUT. I really don't like his 'silly songs'. His more 'serious songs' are great though.

Kanye may be a good singer. i personally like his music but he wont never ever reach the height's of Eminem or standards set by him.

When it comes to hiphop I prefer the oldschool stuff over most of the new stuff.

Can't really say he's the better rapper though, the better producer and song creator sure, but he's even said himself that rapping isn't his strong point.

      I'd definitely pick Jay.

I've never been a big fan of Eminem, some of his songs are just plain annoying.

Although as a few of you have said, Kanye would win over both of them if I had my way.

Eminem wins on the talent or whatever but we can't forget the fact Jay-Z gets to do Beyonce on a regular basis! Also does a song with Alicia Keys so for these 2 reasons I have to go for Jay-Z.

I love them both. I reckon his 'silly songs' help his reputation and image. He just does it for the sake of being an arsehole :D

I do take your point though because when given a choice, songs like Beautiful, Kim, Cleaning out my closet, Stan etc. are the ones that stick with you over something like Business.

His craziest songs have to be Kim and Insane. Both vulgar but excellent!

If you like crazy Eminem and silly Eminem in one then i suggest Amityville. Has that crazy feel with some silly lyrics.

My take on this is that they are 3 completely different styles:
Kanye, apart from being possibly the world's biggest tosser, has no rapping talent whatsoever. His production skills are decent enough although if it wasn't for regurgitating other people's work and ideas he'd have nothing. Phoney pop star trying to be cool sums him up best.
Jay-Z used to be respected in the hip-hop world but has sold out so much it beggars belief. If you looked up "sell-out" in a dictionary it would have a picture his weird bloated face.
Eminem - phenomenal rapper up until he started churning out dross with the likes of D12! He peaked at the Marshall Mathers LP and went slowly downhill.

Eminem is simply amazing, his lyrics and the way he makes words work for him is like no other in the business.

Jay-Z has some good stuff but Eminem is street ahead.

Slightly off topic don't know if its the place to put it but do you think that the Hip-hop/Rap genre is dead or if not a shadow of its former self? I think recent hip-hop/rap can't compete with some of the older stuff.

I think the genre has changed beyond recognition. When i think of hip hop it's big daddy kane, beastie boys, dj cash money, dj spinbad, dj rectangle, ll cool j, nwa, naughy by nature, eric b & rakim, public enemy, paris, kool g rap, 3rd bass, 3  x dope, blade, gunshot, brand nubian, cypress hill, epmd, gangstarr, hijack, run dmc, geto boys, krs1.......

.....but these days when someone says they like hiphop they're usually talking about justin timberlake, chipmunk or god forbid....ndubz and dizzee rascal!!!!

For me, there was a golden age of hip hop which finished in the early-mid nineties with hardly anything of note being produced since.

      Thoughts...?

With you carheex. Slowly dying off.

Eminem is the last proper rapper left today. Jay Z doesn't rap, Kanye doesn't rap and the new brigade of Drake and co. are singers who talk fast.

      However, Eminem is a beast!

At their best or over the distance? Personally I think Jay-Z, and I haven't listened to him a lot at all (and I haven't heard his best I would imagine), is not a patch on B-Real in terms of the X-Factor in the voice or has anywhere near the lyrics and delivery of the  'untenable rhyme animal' Chuck D. I haven't heard anyone in Chuck D's class. Eminem has a catchy voice and delivery, but substance is a little trite when serious but good when it's funny and there is nothing wrong with that.

In answer to the question I prefer Eminem (for what it's worth as I don't really know Jay Z) when he's not serious, otherwise it sounds like Disney doing NIrvana.

What a spit in the face to the true rap greats (although I expected nothing less from MTV who are consistently teaching people that hip hop is about personal wealth/album sales and not the voice of a disenfranchised generation).  Both Em and Jay could team up to battle KRS-One and still not come even remotely close to half of his level.  You want to be considered one of the rap greats, you gotta be able to step to cats like KRS-One and hold your own, neither of these men could.

Actually Eminem when he plays the juvenile delinquent is very funny. THey are his best songs like 'Role model' or that one 'purple pills' or whatever with D12. He is funny and that is innovative in a way. When he sings about the inner pain; it sounds like the rest of the cheesy modern R&B stars trying to cash in.

Ah my b***ard mate went to a night in Bristol last month, with Immortal Tech, Pete Rock, a bunch of UK Hip hop guys (High Focus if you know them) and bloody KRS-One.

Said hes never seen a performance like it, KRS smashed it.

Jay Z is very very overrated as a rapper, but Eminem is cool, especially his early stuff like Infinite
