Torres bursting a gut to play in world cup
      May 12, 2010 02:40:29 pm
Spain have revealed Fernando Torres is undertaking six-hour sessions a day in a bid to be fit for the start of the World Cup.

The Liverpool striker was included Vicente del Bosque's preliminary 30-man squad on Monday despite going under the knife to remedy an injury to his right knee last month.

The 25-year-old has been rated as a major doubt for the European champions' Group H opener against Switzerland, but the national team's medical staff have revealed the prolific striker is working hard to get himself back in shape.

"At the moment, we cannot say if Fernando will be ready in time for the first game of the finals, but we are optimistic," said Spain doctor Juan Jose Garcia Cota of Torres, who scored the winner against Germany in the Euro 2008 final.

"He has started to work outside and is still doing gym work to improve the muscle tone around the operated knee.

"He will be here (in Vigo, North West Spain) until the squad meet up for the World Cup finals."

I really don't blame him for wanting to play in the world cup after such a crap season he's had with liverpool this year, but does anyone else think Spain are pushing him too much to be fit? The last thing we want is for Nando to be injured for the start of the new season

I don't think anyone is pushing him, he's his own man, he's determined, he's patriotic and he's ambitious.  There is only one person pushing Nando and that's Nando.

Yep, he's done the same for us - it's what makes him the player and the man that he is.

I just hope doesn't push himself too hard I'd rather he'd be fit for the later stages of the tournament rather than the earlier ones . Spain can do without him for the Switzerland game .

As much as I love the lad this sh*t pisses me off.

Seems to be down and out for us at the stroke of an emu's dick and then reading sh*t like this just fires me up.

I said it earlier it would be so typical for him and of our luck for Spain to go all the way him have a blinder at the WC, Rafa give extra time off to the Spanish lads, and him to turn up to pre season and injure himself. I know it is a doom and gloom theory but we have seen it happen before..

To be honest Spain got a real shot at the world cup this time with the squad they got so i don't blame him one little bit you don't get to many chances at winning the ultimate goal for a professional footballer ,i hope he does really well and then comes back and spreads that winning streak throughout our squad for next season  ;D

Well he will be less likely to be injuried if he's fully fit so I'm going to take this as a positive.

Didn't he do the same for us though about mid season time? Spent another 2 or so hours down the training ground to try and keep fit during the latter stages of the league, its a shame it didnt pay off for us :(

Geez sound like he's really pushing himself, 6 one hour sessions a day to me is going a bit overboard.

Hope he's not burnt out by the time August rolls around.  :-\

Why the F**k is he busting a gut?!? Last thing we need is him out at the start of the season with a "busted gut" the dumb sh*t.

i seem to remember a number of occasions when he's brought himself back prematurely from injury to help us in difficult games, namely against scum. whenever he's on the pitch, he's one of the hardest working lads in the team.

he is passionate about his country and any player with ambition would do everything they can to play in the biggest sporting competition in the world, so i won't knock him for trying.

i share your concern though that he goes all the way in wc and comes back injured.

Can't really blame him. Would've been different if he would've been out the whole season or something.

If you think about it why would he stay and turn out for a club that is struggling just to stand still , we all have to face up to the fact that we are not a force anymore on the pitch or off it .

You need to read his book!

Also he has publically said IF he were to leave Liverpool, he wouldnt go to any other english club.

You know he took a pay cut to come play for us? Money is not his motivation- dont let some manc, shitrag newspaper or anyone else tell you any different!
