Ya saw this for £2.5 million that is a steal for this lad, he has had a good season for Bilboa and at 20 looks like a very good prospect. Interesting to see his buy out clause is now £30 million. Another player we have sold for peanuts.

I think what you meant to do was...

      Liverpoolfc.tv
      Defender deal agreed
      20th May 2010

Liverpool today confirmed they have agreed a permanent deal with Athletic Bilbao for Mikel San Jose.

The 20-year-old will complete the transfer back to Spain when his loan with the La Liga club expires in June.

San Jose originally arrived at Anfield from Bilbao in the summer of 2007.

The Spanish U21 international was a regular in the Reserves and figured for the first team during last summer's pre-season preparations.

However, he returned to San Mames on loan last August in a bid to gain more senior experience.

I take it he wasn't good enough for Rafa?   ???

I know they had a first opinion and some agreement in place if they bought him, but the fee is still peanuts and watching him this season I think we may regret this one.

Think he's let off too early.

Imagine an Ayala-San Jose partnership in 5 years time

Typical us selling for sh*te amounts. In saying that we probably need every penny we can raise at the minute

I'm assuming it was Mikel himself who wanted to stay there. Echoing Carra's comments, if you don't want ot play for us, off you go.
Would like to have got more money for him but then we don't know what other clauses are involved. We could get more over the years if he does well / is sold on.

No doubt there's a clause in the sale for add ons for future transfers.

We already have Ayala, Kelly, and Robinson to name only 3 young lads, and I suppose that Rafa felt they have a better chance of breaking through.
Add skrtel and Agger into the mix, and we have real competition at CB for years to come - I didn't include Carra because chances are he'll be retired/coaching etc by the time these lads are in their prime.

I really liked San Jose. Another pointless foreign signing to add to the list....

I always rated him higher than Ayala, I don't think Ayala would have been a first choice in Primera League team.

Hopefully we have been given first refusal on Javi Martinez as a clause in this deal (we can only hope).

Was really hoping a deal with Javi Martinez would be tied in with this one, I'm not surprised though been saying all season long he was going back to Bilbao. Good luck Mikel.

      Reported 2.5m?

If so then Rafa's multiplied his value by 10 from when we bought him or something like that.

From what I'm hearing they triggered the release clause in his contract £3.5m, £2.5m upfront and £1m in add ons.

They have put a clause of 30 million in his contract, must rate him highly. We might have missed a trick.

Well in all honesty, they need him. He fits their player criteria in having to be Basque and we don't really need him. Ayala outshone him in the pre-season games they played and Ayala is younger.

Glad he's gone to be honest. Don't think he was good enough for us, played for us in Pre-Season and he was absolutely shocking.

Another weird sign from Rafa, he's another average player again! Liverpool is a great club and deserve top players.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion, he was a brought in along with a couple other youngsters for the youth team initially i think.
