Ex-Liverpool FC manager Rafa Benitez donates £96,000 to Hillsborough Family Support Group

THE ECHO can exclusively reveal that Rafa Benitez today donated £96,000 to the Hillsborough Family Support Group as he gets set to leave Merseyside.

The former Liverpool FC boss, who was today confirmed as the new manager at Inter Milan, handed over the cheque to Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the HFSG, as the rest of the committee watched on this afternoon.

In a low key visit to the group's office, Benitez wished the group well and told them he hoped they would get the justice and the truth they are campaigning for.

Mrs Aspinall said: "It was just nice to know that he wanted to see us before he went."

Although i was one of those that wanted a change in management at the club, i believe that he is one of the nicest guys in football. He's done so much for Liverpool FC and everybody related to it and still does so after he has left. Great man. Wish him every success at Inter (aslong as it's not at our expense).

Same here, though it also makes me angry at the yanks, the press and the 'fans' who called for his head.

I've heard it said before that clubs should never employ managers for second or subsequent stints at the the club because if they did'nt do the job right the first time then they wouldn't have got rid of you ! (Howard Kendal and the Bitters come to mind, 3 try's I think he had !

But Rafa Benitez deserves a second go (under different circumstances obviously !) and I'm sure whoever takes over would give him that chance if its at all possible.

I like the way as well that he chose to donate a sum exactly £96,000 more than Hicks, Gillet, Purslow and Broughton combined.

Well in Rafa,a true Liverpool man right to the end.I hpoe he's back when his stint at Milan is done.Now we must fight on against the real problem that faces our club.

What a remarkable gesture, but as CRK said not at all surprised. He and his family fully embraced and understood what it meant to live in the city, and we are losing not only a great manager, but a great community man.
