Not sure how famous he is in non-Portuguese speaking countries (probably a lot, too!) but I think his Nobel Prize for Literature speaks for itself.
Died today at his home, aged 87. One of the best writers of all time.
2 years ago there was a film based in one of his novels,
Blindness (directed by Fernando Meirelles), which I like a lot too.
