Players that have 'caught the eye'
      Jun 26, 2010 05:36:35 pm
Players that have done themselves no harm during this World Cup!

Off the top of my head - Suarez, Sanchez, Coentrao, Lee Chung-Yong.

Suarez and Sanchez the two for me. Also a couple of the Mexican players, cannot remember who though.

Honda from Japan was expected to shine and he hasn't disappointed.

Quite impressive considering he's been playing on his own up front too which isn't even his usual position.

Kind of the ones I expected: Keisuke Honda, Mesut Ozil, Marek Hamsik, Alexis Sanchez.

I actually feel Suarez hasn't been playing that well, with the exception of his last goal. I know he can do better at least.

What angers me the most about Suarez shining in the World Cup is that he could have played for Flamengo years ago, when he was still in Uruguay, but our assistant manager back then went to watch Suarez play and thought he was nothing better than we already had.

Well, this assistant manager  became manager last year and gave us a League title. So yes, I'll forgive him about that one.

      Honda Tulan

That Portugal keeper Edurado? spelling there and cosictio? is it there LB or RB...

Maxi as havent seen much of him and he is good.

Elia from Holland comes on and offers that different attacking threat.

Higuain, I haven't seen much of him but he is always in the right place.

I think players who genuinely have impressed are Keisuke Honda (Japan), Mesut Ozil (Germany) and Alexis Sanchez (Chile).

Those are the ones I think who impressed but of course, we also have the usual ones who have been around for a few years such as Lionel Messi (Argentina) - though he hasn't scored, it doesn't matter as long as he keeps setting the goals up, and Asamoah Gyan (Ghana).

Hes had an ok world cup I would say (Sanchez), without the real end product. He ran into dead ends a lot today, but at 21, he has plenty of potential, Brazil seemed to much for him today though. Still he has caught the eye and big teams might have a look.

I know what you mean, he got marked out of the game. Against Spain he was very good and other teams. I guess its a big leap from Honduras who are part time to Brazil who may be world champions.

      Alexis Sanchez from Udinese.

Weiss seems to be the talisman for Slovakia though.

Certainly Honda and Higuain and Iniesta have been solid for Argentina.

I was also a bit surprised by Bradley for the US.  He scored that great equalizer against Slovenia and I thought he played great.  Everyone talked about Donovan and Altidore and Dempsey. But Bradley really made a name for himself.

Ozil definitely , he is one of the best players at the WC  I've seen so far , he is very consistent , even though he's not very good looking there's something about which I find attractive ...maybe it's his skills which turns me on ;D . Michael Bradley was also someone ho I thought played well too .  Also that fellow who's no.10 is for Argentina decent ;D too .

I agree with that, his finishing wasnt near as good as the other aspects of his games either, but he sure seem to be a very promising player.

Yeah, I also thought Bradley had a good WC, I remember one Brazilian commentator saying "he's proving to be more than just the manager's son" :D

ESPN are reporting that Man City are going after Donovan...I guess his loan with Everton is over.

I honestly didn't think he was good enough for the EPL. But, he had an OK run with Everton and was pretty solid in the WC, so I dont know. I wish him luck and I guess we'll see what happens.

Messi has been well.. Messi without the goals, Ozil is class but inconsistent week in week out, love Alexis Sanchez, Honda has a great engine (i'm really sorry). Bradley is someone who will end up in the premiership. Thomas Muller has a real future.

Also the linesman who missed seeing that should've been England 2nd goal.

I think Diego Forlan has been fantastic. I'm not a big fan of his, never been, but he has been a great leader for Uruguay. He had to be dropped back a bit as their midfield lacks creativity and he's playing somehow as an attacking midfielder, but he's doing a good job there.

Also from Uruguay, I'd say their fullbacks are impressive - Maxi Pereira and Fucile.

From Brazil, our CB partnership (Lucio & Juan) is second to none. Maicon is absolutely fantastic, his runs on the right side always turn into something special - he's on great, great form. Gilberto Silva is proving his critics wrong too, it's obvious that he's past his best but he's still a very good defensive midfielder, very important to our system. Upfront, there's Luis Fabiano who is an amazing finisher, his record for the national team is incredible (28 goals in 42 games).

There have been a few for me. Have been very impressed by the Japan defender Tulio. Looks solid and organises the defence very well. Not an outstanding player but he is solid. Also been impressed by Honda. Couple of great goals and he always looks dangerous. The other one is not a surprise. Messi! I don't watch a lot of Spanish Football so I ahve never really properly seen Messi play, except the Champions League and Youtube. I can see what all the hype is about, however. All he needs is a goal. And of course, Ozil has had a good tournament but, having watched a lot of the Bundesliga before the tournament, i always knew how good he was. Good to see him doing it on the world stage though.

Lucas Barrios, scored a lot of goals for Borussia Dortmund this season. He's Argentine, got the dual citizenship just a few months before the World Cup.

There is two full-backs who stood out for me of players I really never see much on a club basis but remember both of them when the U-20 World Cup was in Canada.

Fábio Coentrão has been one player who stood out for me, he has a very good engine to go up and down the line. When in attack he really looks like a threat every time. Mauricio Isla from Chile is another full-back who has impressed me with his attacking ability.

His name is Lucas Barrios. He has Lucas on his shirt because he had it on his shirt when he played for colo-colo and shot 38 goals in 37 matches. He transfered to us last summer for 4,25Mio€ an shot 23 goals in 36 matches. I can't even imagine that the reds can afford him.

Schweinsteiger is such an immense player, I think a lot of the work he does in midfield goes unnoticed, people take more notice of Ozil for example, but without exaggeration he's one of the best players out there for holding possession. Always digs in and sweeps up loose balls,I think he's the driving force behind Germany in this world cup.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is a great player. He controls the midfield really well. He is able to make good passes, keeps his composure and can strike from distance.

Exactly like someone we need in our midfield, if you ask me.

      Schweinsteiger - or Pig-Tractor - as translated
      schwein = pig  is correct

      steiger = tractor is wrong.

there are many translations for the word steiger :

steiger( out of the austrian) = womanizer
steiger(in a german coalmine) = overseer or foreman

the german translation vor tractor is traktor. so you see the difference ;)

the players that suprised me the most were müller and schweinsteiger. they were outstanding and i would have never expected this performence.

to be honest there isnt a translation that would make any sense. I dont know how good your german is ( somewhere I read that you are from netherlands, so there is a chance that you speak it very well :P). I am half german half austrian and in austria a "steiger!" is chaser..... but he chases woman, so the best translation would be womanizer.
My grandpa for example was a"steiger" ... a foreman in a coalmine. the verb "steigen" means "to rise, or to climb, or to increase" It has many meanings. So a real translation that would make sense doesnt' exist.

But I think thats enough off topic^^

So it's literally either pig-overseer or pig-womanizer, his name is pretty awesome I think though, doesn't get more German than that. I think he's actually the lead candidate for the golden ball, his performance against Argentina really demonstrated what he's capable of.

I think it'll all depend on who wins the World Cup. I think it's between Sneijder and Schweinsteiger personally. Don't forget, Sneijder could win every possible competition this season, and he'll have played a big role in all of those wins too, if so. David Villa could be a candidate too.

Yeah you're right, the minimum needed really is probably to get to the final as was the case with Zidane in 06. Really the award could go to the likes of Bastian, Sneijder, Villa, or even Forlan. I'd say those where the main candidates based on who's left, possibly Ozil and Muller deserve a mention too. I would say Schweinsteiger has been the best midfielder of the tournament so far though.

I love Schweinsteiger as a player, think he's reborn this season, but it might be hard to beat 4 goals and 4 assists by Sneijder, and thats with some games left. Both deserve it though. I also agree on Forlan, but for obvious reasons I don't think he'll reach the final ;D Muller and Ozil, while doing great, will probably get their chance in later world cups.
