I have mixed feelings about this.
First, the Dutch. I have always been a big fan of Dutch football and their historical contribution to the game (bigger than some WC champions, such as France IMO). 1974, 1978... and why not 1994, 1998. All of them were great teams that unfortunately didn't win the World Cup. People always talk about their greatness with a "but..." in the end. "But" they never won a World Cup. Winning it this year would be the definitive affirmation of them as a great, great football country. That would be amazing to see.
On the other hand, I'm afraid the success of this team could also be seen as the victory of "pragmatic" football instead of the historically attacking and entertaining Dutch football. The current squad isnt their best I've watched in a World Cup. Not even the 2nd best, I think. But they seem the most prepared team to win the World Cup Netherlands ever had. Their main quality, IMO, is their attitude and mental strength. They've been lucky at times, but always took advantage of the opponents weaknesses to kill the game very, very well. It was like that vs Brazil (scored their 2nd goal just after Felipe Melo's own goal) and vs Uruguay (scored the 3rd just after a 2nd - offside - goal).
Also, another factor I have against this Dutch team is their arrogance. I've seen their coach say their key games in the World Cup were against Japan and Slovakia. Errr... ok then.
Not to mention Sneijder and Robben, two of the most arrogant players in the face of the Earth. They also said they could of beaten Brazil by a big score, after the game. Errr.... ok again. Hardly had 3 chances to score, still needed an own goal to win.
But there's also Kuyt there. I'm such a huge fan of him, as a player and as a man. If the Dutch had 11 Kuyts, I would be cheering for them, no doubt.
Now... Spain. They don't have the same historical contribution to football but this is a team building their own great history right now, I think. 30 years from now, people will be talking about Spain, Villa, Xavi, Iniesta, Torres. Also, a big part of my family came from Spain and they were the first foreign team I ever liked. I have a Spanish name cause of it. Fernando Hierro was my first European hero. My ex-girlfriend was also from a Spanish family and I was very close to them for a long time. Still remember her grandfather, crazy Real Madrid fan, he was!
For all those reasons, I've supported Spain in the Euro and will now again. If Brazil couldn't win the World Cup, they were always going to be my 2nd choice. I won't want to kill myself if Neterhland win for the reasons I said above, but I think the only way I could be actually happy about it was if Kuyt scored the winning goal.
Anyway, I'm just very happy with the fact we are going to have a new Champion, as it's something quite difficult to happen... World Cup is the most "elitist" competition ever. For example, this is gonna be only the first final without Brazil, Argentina, Italy or Germany.
A World Cup final is the biggest moment in football and I absolutely can't wait. We're watching history being made.
Sorry Dex, but come on Spain!
